Date | Song | City | Timing | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1992-03-14 | Reba | New York, NY | 11:14 | Notable playing in the composed section, featuring incredible percussion and spot-on syncopation. Mike and Fish maintain a cool vibe, with Page providing great fills. Fish is the star here though, with Trey seemingly soloing in response to Fishman's pinpoint persistence. Trey locks on to a great little theme, and thanks to more punishing drumming, he leads the band through a great rise, into a powerful, compact, peak. Even the drumming post-whistling is compelling. |
1992-03-14 | Foam | New York, NY | 7:53 | A very tight, well-played version with solid contributions from all four and great cohesion. Nice, crisp sbd recording taboot. |
1992-03-14 | Hood | New York, NY | 13:18 | Excellent intro to 4:24 with Page on the B-3 and strong Mike. The jam includes a sweet "Follow The Yellow Brick Road" tease and then builds up in a very rocking manner with solid playing by all four. |
1992-03-20 | Brother | Binghamton, NY | 5:27 | Excellent "Alligator Pit" banter. Actually sounds like Trey is firing a machine gun at the audience! |
1992-03-20 | Antelope | Binghamton, NY | 14:37 | An excellent, riveting and intense jam is followed by Fish on trombone in the pre-"Marco" section. Awesome version! |
1992-03-20 | Weekapaug | Binghamton, NY | 9:56 | A wild and improvisational version with all sorts of good stuff: strong Mike in the intro, unusual play and a vocal jam of sorts, exploratory play that gets well beyond standard fare, signals, an "On Broadway" tease, and sick, sick playing by Trey. |
1992-05-09 | SOAMelt | Syracuse, NY | 8:57 | Creative version with an unusual (for this early period) shift to major mode in the jam, followed by dissonant playing and some incredible trilling by Trey near the conclusion. |
1992-05-09 | Tweezer | Syracuse, NY | 14:23 | Trey hits on a cool theme in the jam that is repeated a bunch with Mike. Excellent pre-94 version. "DEG" teasing from Trey, Mike and Page. |
1992-10-30 | Stash | Boston, MA | 9:53 | Excellent and unusual version. A great quiet section and good improvisational playing. |
1992-11-22 | Tweezer | Ithaca, NY | 8:31 | Very improvisational ("type II") version that includes a "Big Ball Jam." Check this out! |
1992-11-22 | BBJ | Ithaca, NY | 2:20 | -> in from "Tweezer." "BBJ" is sandwiched in the "Tweezer" jam. |
1992-11-22 | Tweezer | Ithaca, NY | 6:25 | -> in from "Big Ball Jam" to complete this "Tweezer." |
1992-11-22 | YEM | Ithaca, NY | 19:05 | "Eleanor Rigby" teasing. Hilarious VJ. |
1992-11-27 | Divided | Port Chester, NY | 16:45 | Outstanding version, an anomaly that jams far longer than any other performance prior to 10/31/94. Of course Trey is blistering here, but this also has a distinctly quiet, settled section that anticipates the band's less rocking, more restrained sound in the later '90s. |
1992-11-27 | SOAMelt | Port Chester, NY | 9:35 | Very cool and exploratory jam includes a nice quiet section and some good, rhythm-oriented jamming. |
1992-11-27 | Possum | Port Chester, NY | 10:39 | Great tension building, multiple peaks and shredding Trey in a roaring "Possum." |
1992-11-27 | Bowie | Port Chester, NY | 13:28 | Jam starts in a quiet, pensive style, but picks up a head of steam, getting nasty and intense. |
1992-11-28 | Foam | Port Chester, NY | 9:38 | Awesome build-up section with Machine Gun Trey taking a strong lead position. |
1992-11-28 | Stash | Port Chester, NY | 10:16 | Great, inspired version which gets out there and has very good Fish/Trey teaming. |
1992-11-28 | Mike's | Port Chester, NY | 9:22 | Beginning with excellent "Walk This Way" jamming, the energy builds up to the first break. After a momentary cloud of dissonance, a percussive, exploratory groove expands nicely. A great version with 2 equally strong jams. |
1992-11-28 | Avenu Malkenu | Port Chester, NY | 9:40 | Blistering, ripping version. Trey is sick! |
1992-12-31 | Weekapaug | Boston, MA | 9:39 | Beginning around 4:00, the jam settles into an improvisational section with excellent contributions by all four. After returning to the standard, the jam features intense and top notch "Type I" rocking. |
1993-02-04 | Stash | Providence, RI | 11:32 | Very cool and experimental beginning to the jam. Some good thrashing around elsewhere. First time with Page on the acoustic piano, which sounds great! |
1993-02-04 | Antelope | Providence, RI | 10:37 | Excellent and very different kind of jam that gets well removed from "Antelope." Great tension in an almost "Stash"-like way. |
1993-02-04 | Weekapaug | Providence, RI | 9:09 | After some "TMWSIY" teasing, the jam immediately launches into exploratory territory, with several great little breakdown sections. Add that it's Page's first "Weekapaug" on the baby grand (which sounds awesome) and some fun "Push Th' Little Daisies" teases and vocals at the end, and you have a great start to '93. |
1993-02-05 | Bowie | New York, NY | 0:18 | "Vibration Of Life" in intro. Cool jam with some interesting rhythmic variation. |
1993-02-05 | Vibration of Life | New York, NY | 2:43 | -> in from "DB." "VOL" is performed during the "Bowie" intro. -> back to "DB." |
1993-02-05 | Bowie | New York, NY | 11:56 | -> in from "Vibration Of Life." Cool jam with some interesting rhythmic variation. |
1993-02-06 | Weekapaug | New York, NY | 7:40 | An improvisational section begins at 4:40, with really great Mike and Page playing. Then Trey adds electric energy to the mix as the jam returns home to conclude. |
1993-02-12 | Wedge | Poughkeepsie, NY | 6:38 | Another "Wedge," another intro. Here, Trey leads, with Page playing in support. This dynamic produces different soloing, featuring more Trey, and great, restrained Page. The band modulates intensity through a cool outro. |
1993-02-12 | Reba | Poughkeepsie, NY | 13:12 | After scratching his way into the jam, Trey plays melodically, offset by Page, who features prominently in this version, offering accents and a series of fills to compliment the version's central theme. Mike and Fish sync up before Trey enters into another musical passage, infused with any number of notes, before the band works through a few false peaks as means to alight upon a nice, soaring release. |
1993-02-12 | Hood | Poughkeepsie, NY | 12:29 | The jam starts with a really nice, swinging vibe. As it builds, Trey has some great soloing, topping it off with strong trilling. |
1993-04-23 | Weekapaug | Hamilton, NY | 11:22 | A strong and exploratory jam with good dynamic modulation, excellent Fish, and some inspired and "hose"-like melodic playing by Trey from 7:25 and 9:25. The setlist describes this as "atypical, jazz-laced jams." I'd just call it ass-kicking '93 Phish. |
1993-04-29 | Antelope | Montréal, Québec, Canada | 12:41 | Rocking version includes a brief jam on Pink Floyd's "Money" (4:45 - 5:20) followed by fantastic, very exploratatory jamming. Intense conclusion to the jam with Trey just shredding away. |
1993-04-29 | Mike's | Montréal, Québec, Canada | 9:20 | The strong 1st jam includes jamming that hints at "Crossroads," before breaking into a repetitive, grundge-like Mike and Fish-led groove. The 2nd jam sounds very much like an early stab at what would evolve into "Simple" the following year, played atop a similar groove to the 1st jam, and then ends in a ripping and intense manner. |
1993-04-29 | Weekapaug | Montréal, Québec, Canada | 4:14 | Excellent jam with Theme From Bonanza and "NICU" teases, as well as strong and unusual melodic content -> to the first "Makisupa" in 320 shows (last seen on 11/26/90) before -> back to "Weekapaug." |
1993-04-29 | Makisupa | Montréal, Québec, Canada | 2:47 | -> in from "Weekapaug." "Makisupa" makes its first appearance in 320 shows (last seen on 11/26/90), amidst a strong "Weekapaug." -> back to "Weekapaug." |
1993-04-29 | Weekapaug | Montréal, Québec, Canada | 5:36 | -> in from the first "Makisupa" in 320 shows. This section includes great "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" ("CYHMK") teases, exploratory jamming and a shredding peak. All in all, another great '93 "Weekapaug." |
1993-04-30 | Possum | West Hartford, CT | 9:56 | Experimental jam with quiet scat singing by Trey early, good tension, a near breakaway section at 6:00, and pounding Fish. |
1993-04-30 | Wilson | West Hartford, CT | 7:11 | Lengthy, playful, discordant intro with "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" teases from Page on keys and Trey on vocals. The Morricone teases continue throughout, most effectively as the nightcap to a queasy, little jam preceding "BLAT BOOM". |
1993-04-30 | YEM | West Hartford, CT | 23:30 | Excellent B&D! |
1993-05-05 | Stash | Albany, NY | 11:57 | Breaks into a punchy, rhythmic groove, returns home, heads out again for more improvisational play, then builds into a powerful ending. |
1993-05-05 | My Friend | Albany, NY | 6:30 | Great -> in from "Runaway Jim." Following the final refrain, the outro -> to "Manteca," then -> back to "MFMF." |
1993-05-05 | Manteca | Albany, NY | 0:55 | -> in from "My Friend, My Friend." "Manteca" is sandwiched in the outro. -> back to "MFMF." |
1993-05-05 | My Friend | Albany, NY | 0:43 | -> in from "Manteca" to complete this solid version. |
1993-05-05 | YEM | Albany, NY | 11:14 | "YEM" -> to "Jam" with Aquarium Rescue Unit and RAGES!! (No B&D or VJ). |
1993-05-05 | Jam | Albany, NY | 20:38 | -> in from "YEM." Aquarium Rescue Unit joins in for the jam segment and it RAGES!! |
1993-05-06 | Possum | Albany, NY | 11:11 | Good improvisation and some cool licks from Trey early, then the Machine Gun lets it rip with great trilling near the end. |
1993-05-06 | Tweezer | Albany, NY | 19:44 | Very melodic jamming. "Sweet Emotion" and "Crimes of the Mind" jams as well. |
1993-05-06 | Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da | Albany, NY | 4:51 | -> in from the gnarly second jam in "Mike's Song," when a surprising "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Jam" emerges. After toying with the Beatles classic, Dick Solberg (violin) joins the band and ignites a spirited and high energy several minutes of play, which neatly -> to "Rocky Top." |
1993-05-08 | Stash | Durham, NH | 12:32 | "Stash" -> "Kung" -> "Stash." Intense, high voltage jam in "Stash." Great segues. |
1993-05-08 | Kung | Durham, NH | 1:59 | -> in from "Stash." The second "Stash" -> "Kung" -> "Stash" appearance is also a strong version. |
1993-05-08 | Stash | Durham, NH | 1:01 | -> in from "Kung" to conclude this excellent version. |
1993-05-08 | Reba | Durham, NH | 13:08 | More subdued, "underwater" jamming, with the band winding the sound way down. Only Trey never ceases playing, and the effect is instant and sustained beauty. Page provides great fills as, trilling and shredding, Trey drives the band through a soaring peak. |
1993-05-08 | Bowie | Durham, NH | 0:37 | "Bowie" -> "Jessica" Jam -> "Bowie" -> "Have Mercy" -> "Bowie." Awesome medley, but the "Bowie" sections are also outstanding. The pre-"Have Mercy" jam section is excellent but very different than any preceding version. Post "Mercy": the usual high wire shredfest. |
1993-05-08 | Jessica | Durham, NH | 2:27 | -> in from "DB." Awesome little melodic section in the "DB" intro pays homage to one of Trey's big guitar playing influences. |
1993-05-08 | Bowie | Durham, NH | 10:18 | -> in from "Jessica." The "Bowie" intro concludes and launches this epic "Bowie" into action. |
1993-05-08 | Have Mercy | Durham, NH | 2:00 | -> in from "DB." Great segue to "Have Mercy" in the midst of a stellar "Bowie" jam. -> back to "DB." |
1993-05-08 | Bowie | Durham, NH | 4:12 | -> in from "Have Mercy." Returns to "Bowie" to wrap up this classic and top shelf version of "Bowie." |
1993-05-08 | It's Ice | Durham, NH | 9:26 | "Discipline" and "Manteca" teases in an extended jam unusual for Spring '93 tour. |
1993-05-08 | Coil | Durham, NH | 10:13 | Towards the end of Page's solo, Trey, and then Mike and Fish jump back in and kick off (by ->) an awesome, rocking and bluesy "Jam." |
1993-05-08 | Jam | Durham, NH | 6:20 | MUST-HEAR, fantastic rocking and bluesy jam that -> in from "The Squirming Coil." As the jam progresses, it starts to sound a bit like "Crossroads," which appears later in the show following "Mike's." -> to "Big Ball Jam." |
1993-05-08 | Mike's | Durham, NH | 6:23 | Following a strong but typical 1st jam, the 2nd jam gets really rocking and blues-infused, then neatly -> to a great version of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads," before -> back to "Mike's" to wrap up. |
1993-05-08 | Crossroads | Durham, NH | 4:58 | -> in from "Mike's Song." The Phish debut of this Robert Johnson blues classic is sandwiched in the middle of a strong version of "Mike's." |
1993-05-08 | Mike's | Durham, NH | 1:13 | -> in from the debut of "Crossroads" to complete a strong, sandwich version of "Mike's." |
1993-05-08 | Amazing Grace | Durham, NH | 3:50 | "Amazing Grace" goes electric! Only instead of creating a Judas, Phish induces a 'Come to Jesus' moment, which, incredibly, seems to take a detour through "Weekapaug." An absolutely stunning tour closer which packs the emotional punch of NYE's "Auld Lang Syne." A-freaking-men. |
1993-07-15 | Stash | Weedsport, NY | 11:00 | The usual great fare for this period, but then at about 8:45, there is an upbeat departure and "Little Drummer Boy" jam. |
1993-07-15 | Bowie | Weedsport, NY | 9:47 | Quality over quantity. Short, yes, but they pack a lot of swift improv into this one. |
1993-07-15 | Lifeboy | Weedsport, NY | 7:29 | Strong version with especially good soloing by Page. |
1993-07-15 | Possum | Weedsport, NY | 9:14 | Trey hits on several different riffs in the jam that are good. Faster tempo, so even faster shredding. "Wilson" tease in intro. |
1993-07-21 | SOAMelt | Middletown, NY | 9:32 | After a good improvisational start to '93, "SOAM" suffers a slight "Type I" malaise in late spring and early summer. Here, the jam progressively frays the edges, getting more outside the box and paving the way for the huge August versions. |
1993-07-21 | Runaway Jim | Middletown, NY | 9:38 | As @SLAVEPHAN notes, the band pushes through an Arabic, minor-key groove, and the version features some distinct hey-jamming, with each musician taking turns changing the musical direction. Play becomes quite tense, and, at times, there seems to be no real resolution on the horizon. One of the finest "short" versions. |
1993-08-07 | Llama | Darien Center, NY | 5:09 | Some unusual and improvisational jamming during Trey's section. Mike and Fish are great responding to Trey here. |
1993-08-07 | Stash | Darien Center, NY | 12:24 | Breaks into an unusually upbeat groove that gradually grows dissonant. Makes a brief return to "Stash" proper before settling, unfinished, with a -> to "Makisupa." |
1993-08-07 | Mike's | Darien Center, NY | 9:52 | Of all the improvisational but slightly off kilter '93 versions, this one may take the cake. The solid 1st jam includes a "2001" tease. The 2nd is all over the map - rhythmic, dissonant exploration, a semi-return to "Mike's," quieter musing with a "New York, New York" tease, an Irish jig of sorts, a "Kung" sandwich with signals, and finally a crazed return to "Mike's" to complete an exercise in improvisational abstraction. |
1993-08-07 | Kung | Darien Center, NY | 3:11 | -> in from "Mike's Song." A signal infused version of "Kung" is sandwiched in the middle of a crazy but improvisational "Mike's." |
1993-08-07 | Mike's | Darien Center, NY | 1:51 | -> in from "Kung" to complete one of the more bizarre but improvisational versions of "Mike's." |
1993-08-07 | My Friend | Darien Center, NY | 7:03 | A good, jazzy outro jam is tacked on which > to "McGrupp." Released on Live Bait Vol. 4. |
1993-08-07 | McGrupp | Darien Center, NY | 10:30 | This classic version features a long, fantastic Page solo with solid backing from the others. As it continues, the energized nature of the playing increases, and Mike is noticeably strong before Fish fires off the Gatling guns to signal the closing section. Released on Live Bait 4. |
1993-08-07 | Antelope | Darien Center, NY | 10:22 | Power jamming plus typical August '93 all-over-the-map improvisation. Very intense with insane tension. |
1993-12-28 | Possum | Washington, DC | 12:05 | Jazzy, exploratory and quiet beginning to the jam. The power cranks up with "Kashmir" teases and then gets blistering hot. |
1993-12-28 | YEM | Washington, DC | 20:30 | Great opening segment! |
1993-12-29 | Antelope | New Haven, CT | 12:19 | Strong '93 version that has a very unsual quiet section from 6:35 - 8:35 before returning to "Antelope." |
1993-12-30 | Gin | Portland, ME | 10:05 | Jam breaks into a quick tempo groove at about 6:45 and continues on this track until returning to "Gin" at 8:20. |
1993-12-30 | Mike's | Portland, ME | 12:44 | Fantastic version which sounds light years removed from the improvisational wackiness of August '93. This "Mike's" has melodic grandeur that distinguishes it from almost any '93 siblings. The signature 2nd jam has moments of hose foreshadowing a bright future for "Mike's." |
1993-12-30 | Weekapaug | Portland, ME | 7:31 | Wraps up a tremendous "Mike's Groove" with inspired "Type I" playing and a funky vocal jam. Unfinished with a > to "Purple Rain." |
1993-12-30 | Slave | Portland, ME | 9:35 | Page stays on piano throughout, which adds grandeur to this version, while Trey really just adds color to the chord progression for most of the jam, enhancing its majesty. But it's over the top when Trey takes the lead. |
1993-12-31 | Reba | Worcester, MA | 13:17 | Phish caps 1993 with a fan favorite. Trey dazzles, his playing incredibly fun and infectious, matched by Fish on his blocks. A festive, celebratory groove ensues, before building to a shredding peak. An exclamation point on a terrific year for "Reba." |
1993-12-31 | Tweezer | Worcester, MA | 12:15 | Trey repetitively hits a lot of notes in staccato-fashion in this jam (that Mbird Board and Working Group member Drew Hitz adores, and thinks I'm an idiot for underrating in '94 when I reviewed this version). While definitely an above "average-great" version (it sure ends well!), this jam IMO just isn't competitive with versions I've rated 7/10 and higher in the legacy jam chart. It's listed in this current jam chart in Drew Hitz's honor. |
1993-12-31 | It's Ice | Worcester, MA | 8:50 | "Peaches En Regalia" teases and Random Note signal in this version. |
1993-12-31 | Possum | Worcester, MA | 12:30 | "Peaches en Regalia" teases, good on-the-spot variation, a great rhythmic breakdown midway, and a fiery ending add up to another top notch '93 "Possum." |
1993-12-31 | YEM | Worcester, MA | 22:04 | Sweet theme in the jam. |
1993-12-31 | DwD | Worcester, MA | 3:38 | Jam segment only following "Auld Lang Syne" (Released on Live Bait Volume 3). |
1993-12-31 | Hood | Worcester, MA | 13:20 | The jam starts with an "Auld Lang Syne" tease and delicate soloing, which builds into a frenzied guitar-led jam. |
1994-04-05 | Foam | Montréal, Québec, Canada | 8:51 | Highly charged musical version rife with ideas and fire Fish. Listen, if you wish, to 8/9/97's surprise summertime splash, and follow Trey playing (here, in 94, after the 6:00 mark) a very similar, demented, distorted, and delightful line - awesome version. |
1994-04-05 | Ya Mar | Montréal, Québec, Canada | 10:07 | Cool bass solo follows Page's organ solo. Then Trey plays a great guitar solo, which Mike joins, to conclude. |
1994-04-05 | Tweezer | Montréal, Québec, Canada | 11:16 | Contains an excellent melodic jam, and Mike is out-of-hand good. A well above-average short version. |
1994-04-09 | Gin | Binghamton, NY | 9:09 | Pretty rocking jam, somewhat straightforward but with tempo shifts, unusual melodic lines from Trey, and a nice rhythmic breakdown section at the end. |
1994-04-09 | Stash | Binghamton, NY | 10:23 | Gnarly and heavy-duty power rocking jam. Not for the meek. |
1994-04-09 | Weekapaug | Binghamton, NY | 9:32 | A pretty crazed version with multiple teases, a vocal jam, and some unusually tense playing. |
1994-04-09 | Slave | Binghamton, NY | 9:05 | Great Fender-Rhodes action from Page early, with the others gradually joining the mix. By 6:00, the power has cycled up on all fronts in a very crisp and cleanly played version. This one goes to 11. |
1994-04-11 | Foam | Durham, NH | 10:07 | Great rhythmic variation from Fish throughout. Page's solo is interesting and unusual. A near-silent jam during Trey's solo, after which he shreds the build-up. |
1994-04-11 | Magilla | Durham, NH | 4:03 | More scuttling and scuffling from Fish. Great Mike. Page playing with great intensity. And Trey modifies his tone; he really shapes and bends his notes. Collectively, a wholly rocking, as opposed to jazzy, vibe. |
1994-04-11 | Possum | Durham, NH | 10:47 | Start/Stop jamming in the intro. Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" is teased during an intense jam. |
1994-04-13 | Stash | New York, NY | 11:07 | Mike is noticeably strong in this dark and evil monster. Finishes with a "CYHMK" tease. |
1994-04-13 | Reba | New York, NY | 16:22 | Another subdued jam with Page again complimenting Trey, whose patience is offset by Mike and Fish, their fills particularly spirited and on point. Trey works through patterned playing, which, cumulatively, has an almost hypnotic effect, before a concerted push works the jam up and into a mini-breakdown before rising into a trill-filled, soaring, release. (A strange bit of space before whistling brings this version to a close.) |
1994-04-13 | Bowie | New York, NY | 13:11 | A very intense, high power version, loaded with tension and unusual rhythmic shifts, but not highly dissonant. Very solid. |
1994-04-14 | Antelope | New York, NY | 13:40 | One of those great probing versions that leaves "Antelope," comes back briefly, leaves again, home again, off again, etc. etc. |
1994-04-15 | Wilson | New York, NY | 4:47 | First version to have the audience chanting, AUD version also has enthusiastic claps. The band delivers a bombastic performance, surely energized by this new avenue of audience participation. |
1994-04-15 | CDT | New York, NY | 8:12 | > from a jam-charted "Wilson." Perhaps still riding the energy of the first-ever audience participation in "Wilson," the band delivers another fiery "CDT." The jam starts with a bit of stop/start action. Page gives the organ a workout before Trey comes barreling in to take over with nifty play at a breakneck tempo. |
1994-04-16 | Fee | Amherst, MA | 6:02 | Trey and Page carry the lead while the rhythm section starts and stops several times before grinding to a halt. |
1994-04-16 | Stash | Amherst, MA | 12:45 | Jam breaks into an upbeat, melodic but intense groove. Then, nasty old "Stash" makes a roaring comeback. |
1994-04-16 | Antelope | Amherst, MA | 11:56 | Bad-Ass jam with power jamming, rhythmic shifts, and more. Fish rocks. The jam winds down instead of peaking. |
1994-07-10 | Stash | Saratoga Springs, NY | 12:42 | Multifaceted improvisational version, including a quieter section, a thrilling rebuilding of energy and dissonance, a second settled section, and a pulsing push back up over the top. |
1994-07-10 | My Friend | Saratoga Springs, NY | 7:28 | Outro jam includes a "Purple Haze" tease. |
1994-07-10 | Mike's | Saratoga Springs, NY | 8:20 | Following a predictably intense '94-style 1st jam, the 2nd jam begins with good exploratory play. Much like the strong version from 5/8/93, there's some great improvisational action before the -> to the sandwich meat, in this case "Low Rider." |
1994-07-10 | Low Rider | Saratoga Springs, NY | 3:30 | After a heated "Mike's" jam flies past the onramp to "Simple," Trey finds a lick not unlike the War classic. Mike and band quickly pounce, and for about two minutes cruise along in a groovy, rocking "Low Rider." The ride goes squirrelly when Fish yanks the wheel, dropping into a morphing series of rhythms and tempos that split the band into four wavering entities, each keeping the melody while choosing his own speed. The "Low Rider" lurches along, slows to a near stop, then revs back up to speed and power-slides back into "Mike's." |
1994-07-10 | Mike's | Saratoga Springs, NY | 1:48 | -> back to "Mike's" adds an emphatic exclamation point to this solid version. |
1994-07-10 | Weekapaug | Saratoga Springs, NY | 8:31 | Settles in the middle with a cool breakdown section before re-building to an energetic finish. |
1994-07-14 | Antelope | Canandaigua, NY | 10:47 | Insanely intense, driving, and dissonant jam, with excellent Fish just hammering away. |
1994-07-14 | YEM | Canandaigua, NY | 23:06 | Sweeeet jam segment and B&D! |
1994-10-07 | Reba | Bethlehem, PA | 14:25 | A rousing composed section incites a huge fan reaction, which bleeds into the jam, notable for an infectious groove - marked by solid Mike - with Trey deliberately building through cool riffing, a rise in sound before a quick dip in intensity finds him augmenting his tone to inform really great play. Cool Page. And on-point Fish. Before the band surges up and through a trilled-out and soaring peak. |
1994-10-08 | Antelope | Fairfax, VA | 11:11 | This is what an "Antelope" on steroids sounds like. Pretty high up there in the Intensity Hall of Fame. |
1994-10-08 | Weekapaug | Fairfax, VA | 11:23 | A brief heavy-metal jam shortly after 5 minutes works its way into uncommonly funky terrain (for '94) before concluding in typical fashion. |
1994-10-31 | Simple | Glens Falls, NY | 8:26 | Taking the outro jam up a big notch from 10/29/94, this version includes a switch from major to minor mode towards the end that creates good tension. Simply put, this is the first enchanting, gorgeous version. |
1994-10-31 | Divided | Glens Falls, NY | 16:28 | Superlative, epic, one for the ages. Hard rocking yet played with extreme precision, this version reflects the band at the top of its game. |
1994-10-31 | Julius | Glens Falls, NY | 7:51 | Trey goes insane. Truly SICK version. > "Horse." |
1994-10-31 | Reba | Glens Falls, NY | 15:34 | Thick grooves and beautiful melodies.... A quintessential Reba. |
1994-10-31 | Bowie | Glens Falls, NY | 13:07 | Essentially "Type I," but this is a textbook, immaculately played version with great tension. |
1994-10-31 | Antelope | Glens Falls, NY | 10:37 | Well-played, mostly straightforward version. Shows just how strong 1994 was for "Antelope" that this one barely makes the cut. |
1994-10-31 | Coil | Glens Falls, NY | 10:05 | A spectacular, transcendent end to a spectacular, transcendent show. |
1994-11-02 | Foam | Bangor, ME | 10:30 | From a show loaded with improvisation ("Tweezer," "Possum"), this version includes moments of uncharacteristic dissonance, and unusual chord progressions and melodic content, particularly in the build-up, which is scorching. |
1994-11-02 | Maze | Bangor, ME | 11:58 | For a show filled with improvisational versions (see "Tweezer," "Possum," "Foam"), it should come as no surprise that this "Maze" is also both inspired and exploratory. It's also just insanely loaded up with tension, Tension, TENSION! |
1994-11-02 | Stash | Bangor, ME | 11:39 | An unexpected and largely upbeat groove emerges from the typically chaotic jam for this time period. |
1994-11-02 | Tweezer | Bangor, ME | 31:00 | Version from "A Live One." A "type II" version that is "all over the map" and "off the charts" (despite being on this one). |
1994-11-02 | Possum | Bangor, ME | 12:20 | Must-Hear stormy exploratory jam with a descending melodic theme in parts, several sections that challenge the limits of standard "Possum," and "I'm A Man" (Spencer Davis Group) teases in the intro. |
1994-11-03 | SOAMelt | Amherst, MA | 14:52 | Epic, Exploratory MUST-HEAR Multibeast, well beyond simple description. When the jam finally returns to "SOAM" after 13:30, there's almost a welcome relief to be home again after a long, astounding, and mind-blowing journey. |
1994-11-03 | Hood | Amherst, MA | 14:49 | The jam includes an unusual and very un-"Hood"-like section from 9:00 - 10:50. The build and peak sections that follow are strong '94 fare. |
1994-11-04 | Bowie | Syracuse, NY | 15:12 | Great tension and dissonance combined with moments of melodic beauty and calm. Like one of the big November '94 "Tweezers" with many movements, and all packed into a 10 minute jam. |
1994-11-04 | Weekapaug | Syracuse, NY | 10:27 | A '94-style funky breakdown jam leads to a spirited "CYHMK" jam before returning to "Weekapaug" for a high intensity peak, with a great "CYHMK" ending. |
1994-12-28 | Weekapaug | Philadelphia, PA | 17:08 | A wacky, semi-evil version moves quickly beyond the standard, beginning with a dark Page-led section, followed by a Fish-led vocal jam. After more exploratory play, the band breaks into a jam on "The Little Drummer Boy," before returning to "Weekapaug" to wrap up. |
1994-12-29 | Runaway Jim | Providence, RI | 9:11 | Excellent improvisational "Jim" which includes a "Dueling Banjos" tease from Trey and must-hear -> to "Foam." |
1994-12-29 | Foam | Providence, RI | 9:25 | -> in from "Runaway Jim." Fantastic segue for this great pairing. A typically strong '94 version with a dramatic build-up. |
1994-12-29 | SOAMelt | Providence, RI | 10:53 | Although neither chaotic nor very dissonant, this one qualifies for the extreme and atypical category - odd but improvisational. |
1994-12-29 | Possum | Providence, RI | 11:37 | "Dueling Banjos" and "L.A. Woman" teases. The latter half of the jam is dark and brooding with a uniquely Fall '94 tone that has moments that sound similar to a "Bowie" or "Tweezer." Ends in solid, ripping "Possum" fashion. |
1994-12-29 | Digital Delay Loop Jam | Providence, RI | 3:15 | Even for a "DDL" Jam, this one is unusual, with an added psychological edge to it. Appropriate warm up section which -> to a mind-blowing, classic and MUST-HEAR "Bowie." |
1994-12-29 | Bowie | Providence, RI | 31:17 | The Legendary Providence "Bowie." Between the "DDL" jam in the intro, whistling, "Lassie" chatter, and creepy whispering, this one is more psychologically jarring than 11/26/94. |
1994-12-30 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 22:00 | Page plays a solo in this unusual version, which like the other Fall 1994 versions of "Tweezer" is must-hear. |
1994-12-31 | Maze | Boston, MA | 16:33 | Spacey intro with a "Digital Delay Loop" section to lead off. Intense Page. Extended Trey section is really more of a full band jam than as typically presented. Eventually gets back to "Maze" proper for a red hot finish. |
1994-12-31 | Mike's | Boston, MA | 8:47 | "Mike's" -> "Buffalo Bill" -> "Mike's." While the 1st jam is standard, incendiary '94 material, the 2nd jam has solid, varied improvisational play before the ->. |
1994-12-31 | Buffalo Bill | Boston, MA | 1:56 | -> in from "Mike's Song." A nice version of "Buffalo Bill" is sandwiched in a solid '94 "Mike's." The -> back to "Mike's" is great stuff. |
1994-12-31 | Mike's | Boston, MA | 1:48 | -> in from "Buffalo Bill," the return to "Mike's" is several steps better than "normal," well worth checking out. |
1994-12-31 | Weekapaug | Boston, MA | 10:35 | Typically strong '94 fare includes "CYHMK" jamming, a funky breakdown section with Page on clavinet, strong exploratory play by all four, and an "Auld Lang Syne" tease as this "Weekapaug" heads for home. |
1994-12-31 | CDT | Boston, MA | 10:19 | Fiery, powerful and precise '94-style jam with an unusual and spacey outro jam tacked on. |
1994-12-31 | Slave | Boston, MA | 11:21 | Trey and Page add a big exclamation point to end the final frame of a fantastic year for the band. |
1995-05-16 | Reba | Lowell, MA | 15:00 | The band locks into an incredibly cool groove before Trey, masterfully shaping his tone, leads the band into an extended improvisational passage enchanting and mysterious. A blend of warm sustain and dynamic modulation eventually yields to strong soloing, with Trey building the jam to a soaring, searing peak. |
1995-05-16 | Theme | Lowell, MA | 10:42 | Debut is an exceptionally well played version. With rich melodic content from Trey and great band-wide interplay, the jamming potential for "Theme" is clearly on display in this first go-around. |
1995-05-16 | Free | Lowell, MA | 8:32 | Debut. Jam section similar in tone, but less with percussion and with less Page than later '95 - '96 versions. |
1995-06-07 | Possum | Boise, ID | 12:29 | Several sections have a bleak and desolate tone, especially from 4:30 - 5:45, but the foreboding sentiment returns later. |
1995-06-07 | Taste | Boise, ID | 6:28 | Debut. Jam section features the same spiraling Trey and Page musicianship, but the lyrics, vocalist, and ending would remain a work in progress for another year. "The Fog That Surrounds" and "Taste That Surrounds" are both very similar (related) songs performed in 1995 as the band tinkered with the format for "Taste." See the song history for "Taste" on this site for more information. |
1995-06-07 | Wedge | Boise, ID | 4:06 | "The Wedge" reemerges to close a 135 show gap. Notable principally for the now-familiar Fish-driven intro, this compact version also features cool and confident play from Trey. |
1995-06-07 | Theme | Boise, ID | 12:28 | Jam section has an unusual, repeated descending chord progression. At 8:20, it morphs into a creepy, nerve-rattling jam, returning to "Theme" proper at 9:55. The quality versions from 6/25/95 and 7/1/95 have a similar descending chord structure. |
1995-06-08 | Runaway Jim | Salt Lake City, UT | 9:21 | After some "Third Stone From The Sun" (Hendrix) teases from Trey, this one gets out beyond the norm. |
1995-06-08 | Caspian | Salt Lake City, UT | 4:28 | Debut includes a short instrumental bridge. The ending jam section and closing chords were added in 1996. |
1995-06-08 | Tweezer | Salt Lake City, UT | 22:40 | Another wacky "type II" version that is worth hearing if you're an aficionado of Phish improv. |
1995-06-09 | Antelope | Morrison, CO | 10:32 | Unusual jam. Sort of off-key. Sort of evil. Dissonant and anti-melodic. No real peak; it just fades into "Rocco." |
1995-06-09 | SOAMelt | Morrison, CO | 13:19 | Improvisational playing in several sections tests the rhythmic and melodic standards for "SOAM" in this solid version. |
1995-06-10 | Mike's | Morrison, CO | 20:02 | The 1st jam segment (to 7:20) is loaded with tension and moderate dissonance. The 2nd jam begins with sounds akin to "Simple," but gradually descends into a murky caldron of eerie and spacey improvisation. At 14:00, the jam begins to emerge from the underworld with low key play, a rhythmic pulse, and growing, dissonant energy, before finally returning to "Mike's" proper to wrap up. |
1995-06-10 | Weekapaug | Morrison, CO | 11:33 | Some "CYHMK"-like jamming leads to a quieter improvisational section which pushes the bounds of "Weekapaug" proper. Released on Live Bait Vol. 6. |
1995-06-22 | Theme | Canandaigua, NY | 12:01 | Intense, well played version approaches the conclusion, and then morphs into an eerie, psychedelic 5 minute exploration that gains some propulsion before a -> into the "Fleezer," a monster version of "Tweezer." |
1995-06-22 | Jam | Canandaigua, NY | 5:23 | -> in from "Theme From The Bottom." An eerie, psychedelic jam follows "Theme," gains some propulsion, and -> to the "Fleezer," a monster 45 minute "Tweezer" -> "Tweezer Reprise" combination. |
1995-06-22 | Tweezer | Canandaigua, NY | 45:00 | The Finger Lakes "FLeezer." Another masterpiece of Phish improv that segues into "Tweeprise." Must-f'ing-hear. Includes Fish on vacuum for a spell, and a "My Generation" jam. |
1995-06-22 | Tweeprise | Canandaigua, NY | 2:43 | -> in from "Tweezer" to close out the famed "Fleezer." |
1995-10-28 | SOAMule | Auburn Hills, MI | 13:00 | Wild Page solo with Trey and Fish joining at times > Trey scat singing and guitar > Page solo with Trey singing along > Page alone on piano > klezmer > wierd extended falsetto singing by Mike > ending. |
1995-10-28 | YEM | Auburn Hills, MI | 22:42 | Very strong version in a year of mostly awesome versions! |
1995-10-28 | Frankenstein | Auburn Hills, MI | 5:55 | On the heels of a strong "Mule" and crazed "YEM," beautiful play straddles the line between "Jam" and a perfect -> as "Strange Design" bleeds to breathe life into a wonderfully executed "Frankenstein." An extra spacey conclusion >'s for "CDT" to compliment a gem of a second set. |
1995-10-29 | SOAMelt | Louisville, KY | 12:03 | Jam immediately breaks into a propulsive groove. Low key at first, the tension builds as it gets beyond "SOAM." Intense. |
1995-10-29 | It's Ice | Louisville, KY | 4:47 | "It's Ice" -> to "Kung," which is played in its entirety during the jam segment. |
1995-10-29 | Kung | Louisville, KY | 2:45 | -> in from "It's Ice." Following "Kung," -> back to "Ice." |
1995-10-29 | It's Ice | Louisville, KY | 1:42 | -> in from "Kung" to complete this version of "Ice." |
1995-10-31 | Divided | Rosemont, IL | 15:06 | An inspired version with some really beautiful moments before Trey leads the boys into an overdrive finale. |
1995-10-31 | Drowned | Rosemont, IL | 4:48 | Debut as part of the 1995 musical costume, the Who's Quadrophenia. Straight forward version with no extended jamming. |
1995-10-31 | YEM | Rosemont, IL | 39:45 | HEAR AT ALL COSTS!!!! "Fuck You (In)(Up) the Ass" VJ. |
1995-10-31 | JJLC | Rosemont, IL | 9:03 | Dave Grippo on saxophone. Grippo kicks in where Trey would normally lead the playing and adds rich texture and a jazz sentiment to this fantastic version. Performed in Chicago, of course. |
1995-10-31 | Suzy | Rosemont, IL | 7:30 | Dave Grippo on alto saxophone, Don Glasgo on trombone, and Joey Sommerville on trumpet. Excellent version with a distinctly bluesy feel to it. |
1995-12-02 | Maze | New Haven, CT | 11:27 | > in from "2001." Hard to believe one of the all-time hose versions of "Tweezer" comes two songs after the boys detonate this cluster bomb. |
1995-12-02 | Tweezer | New Haven, CT | 15:03 | Even more serious "HOSE" in the entire version. Just awe-inspiring! |
1995-12-04 | Stash | Amherst, MA | 12:28 | Although largely "Type I," this typically strong '95 version is an intense thriller, and has excellent dynamics modulation. |
1995-12-04 | Timber Ho | Amherst, MA | 7:04 | Set II opener. Another typically strong '95 version that will fry your brain. Dissonance reigns supreme. > to "Sparkle." |
1995-12-05 | Gin | Amherst, MA | 23:34 | A very exploratory "Gin" jam. At 7:00, the jam starts to twist away from the standard, and works through several sections including driving power rock, percussive '95-style funk, more power rock, and a -> to "Keyboard Army." |
1995-12-05 | SOAMule | Amherst, MA | 13:50 | Page solos, then comes Trey on vocals/guitar, but the vocals are very atypical. Page responds with another strong solo, the klezmer starts, followed by Mike chanting and stomping his feet. On the final beat of the song, the band breaks into a high-powered, accelerating jam that lasts for 1:34 until abruptly transitioning to "Lifeboy." |
1995-12-05 | Jam | Amherst, MA | 1:34 | > in from "SOAMule." A high powered, accelerating jam starts on the final beat of "Mule." Abruptly > to "Lifeboy." |
1995-12-05 | Hood | Amherst, MA | 17:12 | Multiple rolling peaks that get higher and higher, and the final few, which incorporate an "Entertainer" tease are just sweet. |
1995-12-09 | Timber Ho | Albany, NY | 7:00 | Set II opener. Overshadowed by the huge "YEM" later in the set, this version is dark and twisted, an impressive and musical "wall" of sound, but is also very well played. |
1995-12-09 | YEM | Albany, NY | 34:09 | An incredibly melodic and beautiful jam segment makes this among the finest and most adored YEMs in Phish history. Also a "silent jam" and Shaft quote. Vocal jam includes quotes from a talking Beavis and Butthead doll. (No B&D section.) |
1995-12-11 | Bowie | Portland, ME | 23:12 | Haunting, ghoulish and riveting version that includes a long intro. Fish kicks ass! Maybe not as exploratory as the summer '95s, but it compensates with twisted psychological tone. |
1995-12-11 | Taste That Surrounds | Portland, ME | 9:17 | More of a full band jam, as the separation between Page's solo and Trey's was not clear at this stage. |
1995-12-11 | SOAMule | Portland, ME | 12:48 | Vocal and guitar response by Trey is hilarious and wild. Page responds back with another long and dramatic solo; the klezmer, and more weird chanting from Mike. |
1995-12-11 | Hood | Portland, ME | 14:57 | A good mix of quieter playing leads to anticipation as the build develops, then the peak delivers a celebratory release. |
1995-12-12 | DwD | Providence, RI | 31:46 | Extremely improvisational, experimental, "Type II"-on-steroids jamming. Musically, it's all over the map. But "DwD" fans should give this a listen to experience the band taking a fearless plunge into the abyss. -> to "Lizards." |
1996-08-02 | Possum | Park City, UT | 11:21 | Good melodic variation by Trey, some great tension building, and a nice peak make for a good "Possum." |
1996-08-04 | SOAMule | Morrison, CO | 12:21 | Page solo, followed by Trey on guitar, then the rest of the band join in leading to the klezmer, chanting and finish. |
1996-08-05 | DwD | Morrison, CO | 16:52 | Great early funk jam starts at 12:00 with Page on the clavinet and Trey on the mini percussion kit. -> to "It's Ice." |
1996-08-05 | It's Ice | Morrison, CO | 8:28 | Not too long, but a pretty unusual and cool jam. |
1996-08-05 | Halley's | Morrison, CO | 8:13 | The band rocks out the typical outro jam a little longer than usual, then Page cranks up the theremin for "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." |
1996-08-05 | Mike's | Morrison, CO | 13:37 | An intense and hard rocking 1st jam with spiraling tension is followed by an equally powerful, but different 2nd jam. No mini kit action here as Trey is clearly out in front guiding this powerhouse jam. |
1996-08-06 | Tweezer | Morrison, CO | 16:55 | Imperfect "Norwegian Wood" teasing from Trey. |
1996-08-07 | Stash | Morrison, CO | 12:42 | Jam shifts to major mode at about 8:08, continuing until about 9:30, for some upbeat jamming. |
1996-08-07 | Ya Mar | Morrison, CO | 9:30 | Lots of Trey banter during the jam, including his warning about the notorious Red Rocks giant iguana. |
1996-08-07 | Runaway Jim | Morrison, CO | 8:21 | "Runaway Jim" -> "Gypsy Queen" (Santana) -> "Runaway Jim." The jam also has some good rhythmic exploration beyond the segue to "Gypsy Queen." |
1996-08-07 | Gypsy Queen | Morrison, CO | 5:43 | -> in from "Runaway Jim." Lots of good Santana-like rocking in this section which -> back to "Runaway Jim" to conclude. |
1996-08-07 | Runaway Jim | Morrison, CO | 1:07 | -> in from "Gypsy Queen" to wrap up this solid "Runaway Jim." |
1996-08-07 | Possum | Morrison, CO | 12:02 | Extended section of dissonant jamming (6:25 - 9:50) eventually returns to more familiar "Possum" habitat. |
1996-08-10 | Reba | East Troy, WI | 15:07 | Excellent, wide-open, and groove-oriented jamming leaves all sorts of space for soloing, and Trey leads with beauty and grace, his phrasing measured and ripe with shimmery, summertime aplomb. Fish's accents are instrumental in creating a notable contrast, as the version coasts to a soaring, trill-filled peak. |
1996-08-10 | DwD | East Troy, WI | 13:04 | Has a really good but brief breakdown jam from 8:15 - 11:15 before returning to "DwD" to conclude. Several other '96 versions have a similar 3 or so minute rhythmic jams that return to "DwD" (10/19/96, 10/22/96, and 12/31/96). |
1996-08-10 | SOAMule | East Troy, WI | 12:49 | "Sunshine Of Your Love" tease by Page during solo. Guitar/vocal response by Trey. He gets pretty crazy, screaming. A lot of noise - percussion, guitar - during Page's second solo. Chanting. |
1996-08-10 | Hood | East Troy, WI | 15:23 | Jam includes a beautiful and tear jerking Page and Trey duet from 6:40 - 9:55. The rest is predictable but solid "Hood." |
1996-08-12 | Esther | Noblesville, IN | 9:16 | Exceptionally strong version featuring great solos and tight playing from all four musicians. |
1996-08-12 | It's Ice | Noblesville, IN | 9:52 | Excellent percussion support from Fish in this choppy, discordant jam. |
1996-08-12 | Timber Ho | Noblesville, IN | 7:39 | Set II opener. Excellent Deer Creek version with nice Fish and Page contributions. Transition to "Sparkle" once again. |
1996-08-12 | Antelope | Noblesville, IN | 12:29 | Rhythmic variation plus good dissonance combine to put this intense version outside the box. |
1996-08-12 | Possum | Noblesville, IN | 14:06 | Extended intro with cool funky Mike and Trey. Jam peaks at 10:30, then drops into dissonant mode before re-powering. |
1996-08-13 | Divided | Noblesville, IN | 16:10 | Majestic and grand. Right up there with 10/31/94, just a different style and vibe. If you are a fan of Page's piano playing, this one is for you. |
1996-08-13 | Slave | Noblesville, IN | 12:19 | Page stays on the piano throughout which gives this version a majesty similar to 12/30/93. Trey's restraint early on puts the spotlight nicely on Mike, Page, and Fish. Of course Trey makes a strong showing near the ending. |
1996-08-13 | Bag | Noblesville, IN | 10:31 | Intense and hard rocking straightforward version. Great Trey and Page. > to "The Lizards." |
1996-08-13 | Mike's | Noblesville, IN | 22:47 | A super-heavyweight, multi-section version features a 1st jam that includes exotic sounding scales and serious tension loading. At 9:05, the 2nd jam begins with intense, rhythmic rocking and swirling guitar play. By 15:30, the firestorm has cooled, and Page takes the lead on multiple keyboards as Trey opts for the mini kit, before a final cathartic conclusion, reinforced by the "Lifeboy" that follows. |
1996-08-13 | Weekapaug | Noblesville, IN | 8:18 | Wrapping up an impressive "Groove," this version includes strong playing by Trey, funk, percussion, and Page on theremin. -> to "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" with Page on theremin. |
1996-08-14 | Jam | Hershey, PA | 4:47 | -> in from "Wilson." A very good, badass, dissonant and mildly funky jam emerges that grows spacey and > to "DwD." |
1996-08-14 | Fee | Hershey, PA | 6:04 | Great -> into "Poor Heart." |
1996-08-14 | Reba | Hershey, PA | 13:56 | With the Clifford Ball looming, the band throws down a version suitable for any festival. Fast and frenetic, the band channels some inner-Fall 1995 and plays powerfully and without reservation, racing through the composed section to jam with added verve and tenacity. A signature moment from summer tour's surprise show. |
1996-08-14 | Runaway Jim | Hershey, PA | 15:14 | Jam gets nicely beyond "Jim," returns, then breaks into some percussive jamming with Trey on the mini kit. Unfinished with > to "YEM." |
1996-08-14 | Tweezer | Hershey, PA | 19:20 | A must-hear ending to this version which is "type II" in part. |
1996-08-16 | Esther | Plattsburgh, NY | 9:08 | Classic "Clifford Ball" version featuring a totally relaxed vibe, glittering Page, and one of Trey's most memorable "Esther" solos. |
1996-08-16 | Mike's | Plattsburgh, NY | 16:00 | The longish (to 9:00) 1st jam is crisp and well played, but covers pretty familiar territory. However the 2nd jam breaks into solid and intense rocking action, with all four band mates contributing in good measure. |
1996-08-16 | Weekapaug | Plattsburgh, NY | 9:43 | A soaring and impeccably played straightforward jam is followed by a cool Page-led funky outro jam while Trey addresses the Clifford Ball crowd. |
1996-08-16 | DwD | Plattsburgh, NY | 15:34 | Although largely "Type I,", this very popular, well-played version strays from the ranch towards the end with a -> to "NICU." |
1996-08-16 | Hood | Plattsburgh, NY | 13:39 | Enchanting solo from Trey leads the band in a patient, beautiful build-up to a mighty peak that segues (literally) into fireworks. |
1996-08-16 | Jam | Plattsburgh, NY | 3:21 | -> in from "Hood." A cacophony of noisy jamming follows "Harry" to accompany fireworks, concluding the Clifford Ball Day I. |
1996-08-17 | Reba | Plattsburgh, NY | 16:00 | Beautiful. As if so composed. Like grains of sand in some mystic mandala. And then perfectly arranged. |
1996-08-17 | Runaway Jim | Plattsburgh, NY | 12:25 | > "The Curtain", the "Clifford Ball's" special, sweet version is executed with great precision, a case study in tone, tempo, and meter. The band an ethereal conduit for (or from) some other dimension, here is nothing but on-point play, the four as one expertly channeling their supremely crafted vision. |
1996-08-17 | It's Ice | Plattsburgh, NY | 9:05 | Old fashioned version with the whole band involved in a subdued jam. |
1996-08-17 | Brother | Plattsburgh, NY | 6:12 | Ice Cream moguls Ben and Jerry sing the refrain before the jam. Trey's playing is as lightning fast as ever, although the sentiment is less shrill and dissonant than in '91 - '92. Page jumps to piano near the end which is a nice, unusual twist. |
1996-08-17 | Fluffhead | Plattsburgh, NY | 14:41 | A truly great performance, the Clifford Ball "Fluff" features tight, near-perfect playing, great Fish throughout, early funk from Page in Clod, crisp vocals, and swirly, funky Trey, providing backing for Page's superb piano solo, also in Clod. Working through the vocals in Bundle of Joy, you get the sense the band is going to explode into Arrival, and thanks especially to Jon Fishman, the Plattsburgh throngs are treated to a joyous capstone and exclamation point. |
1996-08-17 | Slave | Plattsburgh, NY | 12:20 | Page deploys the Fender-Rhodes early on. This one has great balance, with everyone contributing in equal measure. Trey's skillful use of the Leslie effect as the jam builds to a peak puts this one in the elite category. |
1996-08-17 | SOAMule | Plattsburgh, NY | 15:19 | The others encroach on Page's solo, then back off. Fishman takes over on drums for an extended solo. Page responds with his own solo. Finally, arrival at the familiar klezmer pick-up, chanting and finale. |
1996-08-17 | Tweezer | Plattsburgh, NY | 11:54 | Very good, popular version. |
1996-08-17 | Possum | Plattsburgh, NY | 13:23 | Lots of nice improvisational twists and turns in the jam including dissonant and off-key jamming with great tension. |
1996-10-21 | Possum | New York, NY | 8:57 | Here's an odd one: the entire song is played in a different (lower) key. Go figure. |
1996-10-21 | Simple | New York, NY | 11:57 | Funky version with Trey on the "mini-kit." -> to "The Horse." |
1996-10-22 | SOAMule | New York, NY | 12:35 | Guitar/vocal response by Trey in jazz style. Combined piano and guitar/vocal response to Trey's jazz work, which gets really nuts at the end. Klezmer, chanting and finale. |
1996-10-22 | Weekapaug | New York, NY | 8:38 | The "Freakapaug," as the band is joined on stage by circus dancers and Mimi Fishman, and the music rises to a fittingly celebratory peak. |
1996-10-23 | Ya Mar | Hartford, CT | 9:23 | Bob Gullotti on second drum set. Nice two-way drum solo. |
1996-10-23 | Tweezer | Hartford, CT | 17:26 | Extra drummer (Bob Gullotti), plus Trey on the percussion kit for awhile = lots of OOooomph. |
1996-10-31 | Caspian | Atlanta, GA | 7:08 | Straightforward, but a classic rendering that nicely captures the '96 style of "Caspian" jamming, and differs markedly from subsequent styles of "Caspian" jamming that would emerge in '97, '98, '99, and later. > to "Reba." |
1996-10-31 | Reba | Atlanta, GA | 13:58 | > "Prince Caspian," this fan-favorite and Halloween thriller features notable full-band play, but is wholly dominated by Trey. Forceful and pointed soloing bends, but doesn't break around 11:00, with Trey shaping his tone and Fish breaking down the beat. Huge guitar builds and swells until arriving smartly at the "note." |
1996-10-31 | C&P | Atlanta, GA | 10:00 | First version, with horns, and Karl Perazzo on percussion. Tight, fierce, and ends with a percussion solo. |
1996-10-31 | 2001 | Atlanta, GA | 6:50 | Karl Perazzo percussion craziness, with a lovely amount of loops throughout. |
1996-10-31 | Simple | Atlanta, GA | 15:03 | With Karl Perazzo on percussion, a great rhythmic and funky groove grows out of "Simple" before groovily returning. -> to "Swept Away." |
1996-10-31 | Suzy | Atlanta, GA | 6:28 | Karl Perazzo on percussion, Dave Grippo on saxophone, and Gary Gazaway on trumpet. "Born Under Punches" tease from Page. This excellent version has a completely different feel to it than 10/31/95, despite the similar addition of horns. This one has more of a jazz-like vibe to it, as well as strong percussion. |
1997-07-25 | Wolfman's | Dallas, TX | 15:09 | Lots of good funk, then the jam starts to uncork, but cycles back to more funk. Around 11:00, the jam breaks out into some great "C&P"-like jamming before settling and > to "Maze." |
1997-07-25 | Maze | Dallas, TX | 12:24 | > in from "Wolfman's Brother." Frenzied chaos run amuck. |
1997-07-25 | Gin | Dallas, TX | 21:48 | A classic "Type I" jam drops into funk mode for a good 6 minutes before returning to the "Gin" theme. -> to "Makisupa." |
1997-07-25 | Makisupa | Dallas, TX | 8:39 | A strong jam emerges beginning at 6:20. It's bluesy at first and then moves to a gentle, down-tempo rock jam, typical of '97 Phish, beginning around 7:27. Nice -> "AC/DC Bag." |
1997-07-25 | Bag | Dallas, TX | 11:16 | -> in from "Makisupa." Similar to 8/13/96. Intense, stretched-out version where the band just keeps it going and going. |
1997-07-25 | CDT | Dallas, TX | 15:48 | Bob Gullotti on second drum set. The band really stretches this version out, then at about 9:45, the jam mellows into a rhythmic and bluesy groove that eventually hints back at "CDT" before -> to "Taste." |
1997-07-25 | Taste | Dallas, TX | 10:59 | Joined by the late, great Bob Gullotti, this unique rendering (unsurprisingly) finds a percussive, pulsating groove, but just as the jam is about to peak with the traditional late-'90s "Taste" outro, it instead segues seamlessly into -> "Ya Mar." |
1997-07-25 | Ya Mar | Dallas, TX | 9:56 | Bob Gullotti on second drum set. -> in from "Taste." Big two-way drum solo. -> to "Ghost." |
1997-07-26 | LxL | Austin, TX | 11:40 | In addition to hosting Bob Gullotti on a second drum set, the boys bust out the Funk towards the end of this version - an extremely rare style for a "Limb" jam. |
1997-07-26 | YEM | Austin, TX | 16:42 | "Willie the Pimp" tease just before the segue into "Izabella." (No B&D, no VJ.) |
1997-07-26 | Timber Ho | Austin, TX | 16:47 | Bob Gullotti on a second drum set. Set II opener takes the typical "Timber" jam, extends it and cools it down a bit to a more mellow groove while maintaining a good rhythmic pulse. Never loses the dark "Timber" vibe. |
1997-08-02 | Divided | George, WA | 15:18 | Only played 4 times in 1997, Trey's restraint in this soaring, sunset version from the Gorge (released on Live Bait Vol. 4) allows the others to shine, and being that it's 1997, Mike surely does. |
1997-08-02 | Wolfman's | George, WA | 18:02 | Sure, you can characterize this as "Type I." But within that, you get 6 solid minutes of '97 funk and 6+ minutes of power-rocking release action before returning to "Wolfman's" to close. |
1997-08-02 | DwD | George, WA | 16:34 | All kinds of good funk in this strong version that -> into "Tweezer," after which "DwD" arguably returns for a minute or two. |
1997-08-02 | Tweezer | George, WA | 17:15 | Segues out of "Disease." Brief "DWD" tease near the end as well. Very laid-back, slow, funk-ish version. Weak at times, though. |
1997-08-02 | Hood | George, WA | 17:42 | After Trey asks CK5 to kill the lights so fans can enjoy the Gorge starlight, a stunning and sublime jam ensues. |
1997-08-03 | Foam | George, WA | 12:06 | > in from "Bathtub Gin." Very cool, exploratory Page solo. Trey's solo is enhanced by an echo-like effect. A bass and percussion rich build-up leads to a soaring finish. If you aren't on the edge of your seat when the final verse starts, your soul has gone missing! |
1997-08-03 | Vultures | George, WA | 8:17 | > "Dirt", the version demonstrates considerable growth over a short period of time. Page's fills fall like scales between Fish's off-kilter percussion, the jam itself a revelation. Trey's riffing and soloing is forceful, with each musician acutely attuned and playing "out" as if a means to somehow reign their sound "in". Impressive. |
1997-08-03 | Twist | George, WA | 11:54 | A good, rocking and bluesy jam develops at 7:30 and continues until -> to "Jesus Just Left Chicago." |
1997-08-03 | JJLC | George, WA | 11:57 | -> in from "Twist." Great version from the Gorge with Page switching keyboards and a fiery ending to the jam. |
1997-08-03 | LxL | George, WA | 11:37 | A very different version from 7/31/97, with more staccato playing by Trey, and minor key fills from Page at points. |
1997-08-03 | Julius | George, WA | 13:00 | Jam begins in a great, bluesy groove with Page on the B-3 for a few minutes before he jumps to the piano. Trey is relaxed in his playing, gradually building this one up, but never loses the swinging feel. |
1997-08-03 | Fluffhead | George, WA | 14:47 | Beginning in 1997 and forever since, "Fluffhead" has suffered from some performance malaise. Whether due to lack of practice, fewer live performances, or other causes, the band's precision has declined. Yet this summer 1997 version is an anomaly, a nearly flawless rendering. Thank you Kevin Shapiro for releasing this version officially on Live Bait Vol. 17, because the audience recordings of this classic performance don't do justice to a truly exceptional, outlier version. |
1997-08-03 | Taste | George, WA | 11:58 | Around 6:30, this version comes very close to breaking free of "Taste" altogether into free form improvisation. Fantastic peak and finale. |
1997-08-14 | Antelope | Darien Center, NY | 13:31 | Gets beyond "Antelope" at several points, including brief major mode action (5:40 - 6:30), rhythmic variation, a brief settle, and good tension building before mounting a serious and dissonant peak. |
1997-08-14 | Jam | Darien Center, NY | 8:52 | -> in from "Hood." An ambient jam starts as "Harry" ends, morphing into an exploratory funk-based one. > to "Forbin." |
1997-11-21 | Emotional Rescue | Hampton, VA | 16:58 | A dark and stormy groove with Fall '97's unique sound. Funk is the predominant style initially but the jam becomes more ambient and throbbing towards the end and taps into that same enveloping power found in the next night's "Halley's" jam. |
1997-11-21 | Caspian | Hampton, VA | 9:59 | Jam is well played but typical - then there is a long digital delay loop fade out instead of the usual closing chords. |
1997-11-21 | Bag | Hampton, VA | 25:42 | > in from "Ghost." The band dexterously weaves together layers of hard rock, funk, and delicate, ambient space almost imperceptibly, as the transitions are so fluid. Difficult to break into easily defined sections or movements, it's more like a dynamically evolving life form. -> to "Slave To The Traffic Light." Simply must-hear. |
1997-11-21 | Slave | Hampton, VA | 12:30 | -> in from a monster "Bag." '94 and '97: Great years for Phish and for "Slave." But the styles (for both) are very different. This "Slave," like many '97s, has a feeling of gradual building, rather than skyrocketing from valley to peak. |
1997-11-22 | Mike's | Hampton, VA | 16:32 | Single jam format, but there's a lot going on in this funk filled fan favorite. Patient but clearly directed, the band works the basic groove over and over, adding texture and accent, swelling and shrinking the energy. Around 12:00, the focus shifts to quieter musing and exploration, before finially slipping neatly into "Hydrogen." |
1997-11-22 | Weekapaug | Hampton, VA | 13:34 | A fan favorite show opens with a strong "Mike's Groove." "Weekapaug" begins with strong "Type I" jamming through 6:50, when it shifts to '97-style funk mode with a slightly dark tone. The funk ends with a "stop" and returns to "Weekapaug" in very good form. |
1997-11-22 | Hood | Hampton, VA | 18:00 | This patient "Hood" has an extended and very gradual build. The peaking section in the final few minutes is quite glorious. |
1997-11-22 | Halley's | Hampton, VA | 24:13 | Starting off in a funky, mellow groove, the jam gradually grows legs and momentum with excellent contributions from all four. At about 18:00, the jam downshifts to a more quiet, pensive sentiment with occasional flashes of powerful bass and percussion. A must-hear classic. |
1997-11-22 | Tweezer | Hampton, VA | 11:31 | Popular, widely circulated funky version. "BEK" teases. |
1997-11-26 | Tweezer | Hartford, CT | 17:29 | Funk soars into some excellent, transcendent, arguably "hose" improv. |
1997-11-26 | Gumbo | Hartford, CT | 12:11 | Funky jam has nice interplay between band members. Stacatto-ey at times with some "Manteca" teases. At 8:00 Mike starts a theme that they play around with for a couple minutes before Trey takes over with a solo that leads into My Soul. |
1997-11-26 | McGrupp | Hartford, CT | 10:07 | An excellent version arriving midway through an excellent first set. Following a strong composed section, Page crafts an inspired passage, gently working a pleasant melody. Trey responds in kind, offering the perfect counter to Page's playing. While different from the typcially comedic "Mule-Duel," the combination here jells, creating an inspired rise to the conclusion. |
1997-11-26 | Taste | Hartford, CT | 12:02 | Unbelievable playing by Trey and the others as the band builds to a HUGE peak and then drives up over another. 7/22/97 is (literally) electrifying; 8/3/97 is unusually improvisational. This version is just phenomenal, with masterful contributions by all band members. |
1997-11-26 | Character Zero | Hartford, CT | 20:43 | This uniquely jammed out version maintains a heavy rock vibe for the duration and features multiple Trey solo sections. -> "2001". |
1997-11-26 | 2001 | Hartford, CT | 14:23 | First jam is stellar, highlighted by the 5:00-7:00 mark. Second jam goes "Super Bad" stop-start and your clothes will be shed on the ground. Segue into "Cities" is great. |
1997-11-26 | Cities | Hartford, CT | 8:00 | Segues out of "2001." Nice mellow groove tacked onto the outro. -> to "Ya Mar." |
1997-11-26 | Caspian | Hartford, CT | 11:19 | > in from "PYITE." Soaring and shredding guitar playing by Trey. Stellar backing from the others. |
1997-12-12 | Taste | Albany, NY | 11:11 | The Chairman of the Boards leads the way, but Big Red is no slouch either. |
1997-12-12 | Tweezer | Albany, NY | 15:46 | Another stellar fall 1997 version. |
1997-12-12 | Saw It Again | Albany, NY | 11:54 | "Saw It Again" rocks along in full power mode for a good 5 1/2 minutes before mellowing into '97-style ambient space and -> to a high quality "Piper." |
1997-12-12 | Piper | Albany, NY | 18:57 | -> in from "Saw It Again." Very improvisational version that modulates back and forth between hard rocking bursts and quiet, pensive moments. Includes a "BOAF" tease and beautiful space before > into "Swept Away." |
1997-12-12 | Caspian | Albany, NY | 10:07 | -> in from "Swept Away > Steep." Straightforward until 10:07, when the band launches into a post closing chord, rocking, funky, and cerebral "Jam." Great Fall '97 improvisation here with a -> to "Izabella." |
1997-12-12 | Jam | Albany, NY | 8:17 | -> in from "Prince Caspian." A rocking, funky and cerebral jam emerges at the conclusion of "Caspian." Great Fall '97 jamming with similarities to "Llama." -> to "Izabella." |
1997-12-13 | Ya Mar | Albany, NY | 18:24 | At about 8:30, the opening chords are replayed, and the band breaks into a funky, upbeat 10 minute jam of exceptional quality. Must hear. SBD recording "From The Archives" available. |
1997-12-13 | Vultures | Albany, NY | 10:29 | Clearly comfortable, the band works through the intro into an awesome "middle" section featuring, unsurprisingly, inspired and deft play from Trey. The song loses its shape to assume a different form, the jam cooling after the 5:30 mark to become decidedly - and pleasantly - spacey, before a spirited return to the song's closing refrain. |
1997-12-13 | Tube | Albany, NY | 8:42 | Lots of funk in this very good version. Page leads the way with his clav and piano work. |
1997-12-13 | Weekapaug | Albany, NY | 9:37 | Excellent, adding an exclamation point to a multi-song "Mike's Groove." The jam dwindles into nothingness before -> "Catapult" and finishing strongly. |
1997-12-13 | Catapult | Albany, NY | 0:58 | -> in from "Weekapaug." "Catapult" is sandwiched amidst a strong "Weekapaug." -> back to "Weekapaug." |
1997-12-13 | Weekapaug | Albany, NY | 5:35 | -> in from "Catapult", with a "CYHMK" tease, to complete another strong '97 "Weekapaug." |
1997-12-13 | Hood | Albany, NY | 17:44 | The jam drifts away from the typical "Hood" quiet section into an ambient sort of section at 8:45. At 12:15, an excellent, rocking, and non-"Hood" rhythm kicks in and continues until 13:40, when a huge traditional peak erupts. |
1997-12-29 | Theme | New York, NY | 12:31 | Blistering, high octane version with nice concluding transition space and a > to "Fluffhead." |
1997-12-29 | Antelope | New York, NY | 15:55 | Straightforward but well played jam, followed by some downright filthy funk jamming in the "Rocco" section. |
1997-12-29 | DwD | New York, NY | 22:00 | Fearsome but exploratory jam. Moments of quiet settle are repeatedly upended by intense funk rocking. This legitimate monster "Disease" finally gives up a little belligerence only to -> into a very strong "David Bowie." |
1997-12-29 | Bowie | New York, NY | 19:49 | Excellent and thrilling version with strong musicianship. Mode shift out of typical (but very well played) "Bowie" at 13:55 into a great groove which peaks and returns to "Bowie" by 17:00. |
1997-12-29 | Possum | New York, NY | 2:38 | > in from a strong "Bowie". Fun version with two "I Can't Turn You Loose" jams, one at the onset of the jam and the other appearing after the last chorus. |
1997-12-29 | I Can't Turn You Loose | New York, NY | 0:50 | -> from "Possum". The first "I Can't Turn You Loose" section pops up early in "Possum's" jam and then > back to "Possum". |
1997-12-29 | Possum | New York, NY | 5:39 | The main "Possum" jamming occurs here and includes extended Page lead sections on organ and piano, before Trey gets his licks in later on. |
1997-12-29 | I Can't Turn You Loose | New York, NY | 0:30 | Another round of "I Can't Turn You Loose" puts a cap on a solid "Possum". |
1997-12-29 | Tube | New York, NY | 10:50 | Absolutely locked-in version with seamless interplay, breakdown solos by Trey, Page, and Mike, and "I Feel the Earth Move" teasing. One of the greats. |
1997-12-30 | Sneakin' Sally | New York, NY | 9:52 | First performance in 920 shows, opens first set of a highly regarded show. Nice '97 style funk/rock groove follows the lyrical section. A very unhurried, patient feel to this one. -> to "Taste", and is reprised and finished in the 4-part funk-fest encore. |
1997-12-30 | Taste | New York, NY | 10:23 | -> in from an historic "Sneakin' Sally." Strong version, but quite different from most of the Fall '97 versions. Here, Trey solos beautifully, but Page's role seems far more restrained. There is far less of a full band build towards the end than musical support for Trey's incredible soloing. To some ears, the best "Taste" ever. To others, it's too one dimensional. |
1997-12-30 | Stash | New York, NY | 12:59 | Great version where Mike and Fish drive the jam into improvisational territory, including some "Manteca"-like jamming around 8:20, and the ending section dissolves in a quiet but tense manner. |
1997-12-30 | Bag | New York, NY | 24:38 | Opening an incredible 2 1/4 hour-long Set II, the second monster "Bag" combines the same elements as the first - funk, rock, and delicate space, but in a completely different manner and configuration. Includes "Third Stone From The Sun" and "Psycho Killer" teases with a > to "McGrupp." A must-hear dynamo that belies a short description. |
1997-12-30 | McGrupp | New York, NY | 9:33 | With Mike and Page out front early, Trey ultimately enters the fray, and he and Page break into an eerie, counterpoint-based duet of sorts, with Mike and Fish nearly absent from the mix. Mike and Fish finally jump back in, creating a tense, throbbing sentiment which gradually dissipates with no concluding section, and instead spills into an epic "Harpua." |
1997-12-30 | Hood | New York, NY | 19:57 | With no final refrain, an atypically uptempo jam breaks into a rocking/bluesy groove at 16:45 and -> to "My Soul." |
1997-12-30 | Sneakin' Sally | New York, NY | 4:58 | In from BEK ->, the second "Sneakin' Sally" of this fan favorite show functions as a funky reprisal of the major bust-out that opened the evening's festivities. Jumps right into a jammed-out show-closing > Frankenstein. |
1997-12-30 | Frankenstein | New York, NY | 10:40 | > in from "Sneakin' Sally." Part 4 of an incredible 4-song encore, and this "Frankenstein" is jammed-out, taboot! |
1997-12-31 | Emotional Rescue | New York, NY | 15:21 | Compared to Hampton, a snappier, more uptempo funk groove unfolds and intensifies in the later stages with brief rock flurries. |
1997-12-31 | Mike's | New York, NY | 14:00 | Yeah, this is a badass version alright, with a monster, Mike-led groove (it is after all, Mike's song). It's got funk, but not as much as some of the other '97s. And it's got power. At around 9:40, there's a stop, and then a 2nd jam of sorts begins, delicate bliss mode play that sets up well for the "Piper" that follows. |
1997-12-31 | Weekapaug | New York, NY | 17:56 | Among the longest "Weekapaugs" to date, this version provides a fitting capstone to 1997. After 14 minutes of balls-to-the-wall, but largely in-the-box jamming, Trey, then Mike, then Page -- and after some Trey banter -- Fish, take solos to send the crowd hurtling towards 1998 (and "2001"). |
1997-12-31 | Maze | New York, NY | 17:22 | > in from "Tweezer." Despite its duration, at various points this version seems to lose its bearing, especially from 13:10 on. But it's well worth checking out. Includes a "Birdland" tease and is unfinished with a > to "Prince Caspian." |
1997-12-31 | Loving Cup | New York, NY | 8:57 | This is how to close a third set on NYE! Crazy-raw, rough playing by all! |
1998-04-02 | Tube | Uniondale, NY | 8:00 | Island Tour opener. Mike's bass lines keep this funky jam fresh, while Page transitions from the clav to the organ and piano. Also includes a guitar breakdown. |
1998-04-02 | Stash | Uniondale, NY | 19:24 | The jam almost immediately breaks into exploratory ground that is unusual for this period. Following an ending section without vocals, the jam at 13:10 breaks into a gorgeous ambient jam (first of '98) with "Frankie Says" quotes. |
1998-04-02 | CDT | Uniondale, NY | 10:47 | Crazy set-closing version where Trey just keeps the jam going and going, and then he converses a bit with the audience during the conclusion. |
1998-04-02 | BOAF | Uniondale, NY | 9:19 | Debut has a crescendo-oriented jam that starts off relaxed and picks up punch. |
1998-04-02 | Sneakin' Sally | Uniondale, NY | 12:39 | -> in from "Wolfman's Brother." A heavy funk groove breaks out following the lyrical section with some great Fishman percussion. Great collective playing as the jam progresses and segues -> into "Frankie Says." |
1998-04-02 | Twist | Uniondale, NY | 18:34 | Exceptional, multi-section version. The jam breaks away from "Twist" at 6:30 into a serene and lush ambient soundscape. At 13:10, an effects-laden darkness overtakes and continues until a > to "Sleeping Monkey." |
1998-04-03 | Mike's | Uniondale, NY | 13:47 | Show opening "Mike's" has a funky, well played 1st jam with little touches of ambient sound. The 2nd jam kicks off with a dark and powerful tone that gradually mellows into quiet musing which warms in sentiment and -> "The Old Home Place." |
1998-04-03 | Weekapaug | Uniondale, NY | 16:26 | Arguably the funkiest "Weekapaug" ever, this one is essentially "Weekapaug -> Funk Jam -> Weekapaug." Teases of the song that would become "Mozambique," "C&P" (sung, not played!), "Nellie Kane," and "Brazil" are just gravy in this extraordinarily improvisational version of the Phish classic. |
1998-04-03 | Roses | Uniondale, NY | 27:19 | An incredible jam emerges out of "Roses" proper, opening Set II in a historic and highly regarded show. The improvisational jam combines dark sentiments, ambient sounds, major mode playing, and groove-based action. Must-hear version which > to a strong "Piper." |
1998-04-03 | Piper | Uniondale, NY | 16:14 | After a gorgeous building intro, this version is somewhat unique in that the jam follows the ending coda that was common in early versions of "Piper." The jam itself is restrained and contemplative, based somewhat on the ending coda. |
1998-04-03 | Loving Cup | Uniondale, NY | 6:54 | > in from "Piper." Sort of the icing in the cake which brings the incredible "Roses Are Free" > "Piper" jam to an upbeat and celebratory close, before launching into the comic "naked guy" madness which happens in the ensuing "Antelope." |
1998-04-03 | Antelope | Uniondale, NY | 14:16 | Fish says, "If you're gonna run up on the stage, just don't let Carini get you" in the intro. This prompts hilarious "Carini's gonna get you" harmonizing throughout the song. Intense straightforward version with Funky Mike in the "Rocco" section. |
1998-04-04 | Tweezer | Providence, RI | 16:05 | Some wonderful space-funk evolves into stellar, full-band, magnificent improv. Another version I underrated in the 1990s. |
1998-04-04 | Taste | Providence, RI | 10:55 | Mike doesn't get a lot of mention on this chart, but he is really rock solid here, underpinning the harmonic base off of which Trey and Page shine. Still, this version doesn't have quite the "extra mustard" of many '97 versions. |
1998-04-04 | BOAF | Providence, RI | 15:18 | Elongated and groovy version suggests several possible future jamming directions while never straying too far from "Birds" itself. |
1998-04-04 | 2001 | Providence, RI | 16:40 | Haunting intro and a grooving minimalist first jam. Trey pounces at the 9 minute mark and another Island Tour masterpiece is created. |
1998-04-04 | Brother | Providence, RI | 11:59 | > in from "2001." About 4:38 into the conventional "Brother," this one departs into a great, funky jam. Way beyond the standard, it nonetheless builds in tension and dissonance as the jam progresses. Includes a brief "DEG" tease. After the song, the band played a brief "radio friendly" reprise. |
1998-04-05 | YEM | Providence, RI | 25:32 | Spirited jam led by Trey. (No B&D.) |
1998-04-05 | McGrupp | Providence, RI | 10:28 | Great first-set placement affords room for dark, contemplative playing. Although Page dominates, full-band interplay takes hold, with Trey providing strong counterpoint to Page. Fish serves as the unsung hero, adeptly using the cymbals to keep a vibrant pulse, and adding tension as this swirling version builds to a cathartic conclusion. |
1998-04-05 | Gin | Providence, RI | 11:25 | Straightforward jam grows rhythmic, funky and exploratory legs, which lead to a seamless -> to a very good "Cities." |
1998-04-05 | Cities | Providence, RI | 10:36 | -> in from "Gin." Initially funky, the jam gets a little more rocking before some Mike-led quiet space and a > to "Sparkle." |
1998-04-05 | Ya Mar | Providence, RI | 14:11 | At about 8:00, Trey launches into an extended, beautiful solo that is joined by the others at about 11:15 in a light, airy jam that segues -> to "Prince Caspian." |
1998-04-05 | Caspian | Providence, RI | 11:20 | -> in from a stellar "Ya Mar." Hard rocking but thoroughly upbeat jam in "Caspian" settles into some beautiful ambient space before closing and > to "Maze." |
1998-04-05 | Maze | Providence, RI | 8:05 | Instead of Trey's solo, the band opts to -> to "Shafty." |
1998-04-05 | Shafty | Providence, RI | 5:04 | -> in from "Maze." The band skips Trey's solo in "Maze" and debuts "Shafty" instead. -> to "Possum." |
1998-04-05 | Jam | Providence, RI | 5:56 | -> in from "Possum." A sweet-ass funk jam follows the marsupial and paves the path by way of a top shelf -> to a slow-tempo and super funky "Cavern," to close out the Island Tour. |
1998-04-05 | Cavern | Providence, RI | 5:51 | -> in from "Jam." Following an excellent funk jam, a very funky rendition of "Cavern" is delivered which includes original and alternate lyrics. Great way to close out the Island Tour! |
1998-07-15 | Wolfman's | Portland, OR | 8:51 | Classic "Type I" version that lets go of the funk, making way for some blues-inflected power jamming with great Page. |
1998-07-15 | Horn | Portland, OR | 3:58 | Standard "Horn" -> to an incredible and classic '98 ambient jam. |
1998-07-15 | Jam | Portland, OR | 6:19 | -> in from "Horn." A superb cerebral and lush, vintage '98 ambient jam uncorks itself on the back end of "Horn." |
1998-07-15 | BOAF | Portland, OR | 7:27 | Slightly extended jam with the beginnings of some exploration beyond the standard. |
1998-07-15 | LxL | Portland, OR | 12:35 | In addition to a stretched out, well-played jam, this version has a nice ambient closing that segues -> to "Simple." |
1998-07-15 | Tweezer | Portland, OR | 6:19 | "California Love" tease, "Manteca" theme. |
1998-07-15 | California Love | Portland, OR | 1:52 | -> in from "Tweezer." "California Love" is sandwiched in the "Tweezer" jam. |
1998-07-15 | Tweezer | Portland, OR | 7:17 | -> in from "California Love" to continue this "Tweezer." |
1998-07-15 | Free | Portland, OR | 11:22 | -> in from "Tweezer." An awesome jam develops that is unique, with great Fishman and Page on the B-3. Unfinished. |
1998-07-15 | Hood | Portland, OR | 13:23 | Delicate, directed, and fantastic playing by Trey leads to a soaring peak. Mike and Page are great, too. |
1998-07-15 | Wilson | Portland, OR | 7:04 | Encore version has Trey leaning into a heavy power chord riffing extravaganza out of the initial "solo" section. The jam threatens to go even deeper before returning to the lyrics, but after "Can you still have fun?" Trey proceeds to unload a furious, rapid quiver of wah licks for a slightly extended fanfare. > "Tweezer Reprise." |
1998-07-16 | Reba | George, WA | 16:59 | Trey employs a silky, milky-whammy sort of effect, generating a really groovy, laid-back jam. Extremely fluid, extended, and atypical jamming features strong, rhythmic play from all, the version coasting, moving pleasantly upon its own kinetic energy, not quite building but rather dissolving to create a fantastic > into "FEFY." |
1998-07-16 | Julius | George, WA | 11:32 | Another version where the jam is made more interesting by starting with a nice swinging groove, and only very gradually building the intensity. |
1998-07-16 | Moma | George, WA | 11:54 | Good, funky playing before the lyrics. The main jam segment has a very nice peak and scat singing throughout. |
1998-07-16 | Tube | George, WA | 9:53 | Slow grooving at the Gorge combining funk and ambience. > to "Slave". Released on Live Bait Volume 9. |
1998-07-17 | Ya Mar | George, WA | 12:49 | > in from "Makisupa." Nice, easy going summer outro jam follows typical "Ya Mar" jam. Followed by a big "Gumbo." |
1998-07-17 | Gumbo | George, WA | 11:44 | Slow funk groove with "Manteca" teases. Last few minutes is funky Trey solo and it finishes off with one slow chord. |
1998-07-17 | Divided | George, WA | 17:11 | On the heels of a show opening "Makisupa" and chart versions of "Ya Mar" and "Gumbo," and notwithstanding 8/2/97, this is The Epic Gorge Sunset Version. Just wish KS would release the sbd of this whole excellent show (also with a stellar "2001" and "Mike's Groove" in Set II)! [This petition has been answered as of 2022's The Gorge '98 release.] |
1998-07-17 | 2001 | George, WA | 24:13 | Longest "2001" ever, the first jam is longer than some entire versions of "2001". Second jam is as gorgeous and fiery as the scenery where it was created. |
1998-07-17 | Mike's | George, WA | 18:38 | Some might characterize the heavy duty, groove-based 1st jam which continues to 10:55 as repetitive and dull. Regardless, the 2nd jam is so different, melodic, and inspired that bopping along to a sludge-like groove for a bit is well worth it for the ambient hose-down payoff that follows. |
1998-07-17 | Weekapaug | George, WA | 13:23 | An exhilarating version highlighted by filthy funk, a nice "Taste" tease, and a chunky blues-rock groove to close, unfinished. |
1998-07-19 | Ghost | Mountain View, CA | 17:26 | Great Wentian "Mind Left Body Jam"-like build into driving groove through "Who Knows" and "Manteca" themes culminating in blistering rock with "Ghost" vocal reprise. [Solid "Ghost" jamming releases, returns to funk with "Manteca"-like jamming, then builds to a raging and spirited celebratory blow-out with Fish vocals adding emphasis.] |
1998-07-19 | YEM | Mountain View, CA | 21:49 | "Things That Make You Go Hmm" teases from Mike. They would become very, very common from him from this YEM onward, especially during the B&D section. They are often not noted in this chart or elsewhere on Phish.net because he teases this riff so much. (No B&D.) |
1998-07-19 | Llama | Mountain View, CA | 6:59 | Set II opener. Trey uses a lot "wah" effects throughout his extended section. Trey proves he's still lightning fast. |
1998-07-19 | JJLC | Mountain View, CA | 11:20 | -> in from "Tweezer." More uptempo, less of a bluesy feel than many versions. Page jumps back and forth between the piano and organ, and plays both simultaneously at one point. Trey and the boys rock this one hard. |
1998-07-19 | McGrupp | Mountain View, CA | 9:25 | With Fish nicely keeping time, Page embarks on a charged solo, playfully recreating Mike's bass line. Even with Page out in front, there is a growing sense that all are contributing to this classic '98 version. For the second consecutive time, an archetypal, ambient-style "Jam" emerges on the heels of a very fine "McGrupp." |
1998-07-19 | Jam | Mountain View, CA | 6:02 | Following a strong "McGrupp," Trey embarks on a melancholic, soulful, and ambient interlude. Thoughtful Page runs counterpoint, until Fish and Mike team to drive the jam more deliberately. Seemingly composed, this music cools into classic '98 space with delicate soloing by Trey, and then -> to "DwD." |
1998-07-20 | Gin | Ventura, CA | 21:03 | The customarily great '98 "Gin" jam breaks into a funky groove at 13:45 and then gradually works back to "Gin." |
1998-07-20 | Makisupa | Ventura, CA | 9:01 | This funky version segues out of a funky "Drowned." There's a breakdown for Mike and a sweet little solo around 4:40 from Trey, and a spacey ambient jam for about a minute at the end. |
1998-07-20 | Caspian | Ventura, CA | 12:03 | Great combination of rocking yet slightly ambient sound from Trey mixed with bluesy piano stylings from Page. > to "Harry Hood." |
1998-07-20 | Halley's | Ventura, CA | 9:57 | In the encore slot, the band extends the jam out into a nice, upbeat groove, and finishes the show by gradually cycling down their instruments, leaving only a Digital Delay Loop whirling away. |
1998-08-08 | Sneakin' Sally | Columbia, MD | 11:15 | A really great funky, but low key, jam emerges on the back end of "Sally." -> to "Guyute." |
1998-08-08 | 2001 | Columbia, MD | 11:54 | Trey in his full 1998 guitar mastery glory. A nice visit to Nastytown in the second jam as Mike is liquid beast. |
1998-08-08 | Piper | Columbia, MD | 15:43 | Not your typically pumped up "Piper," this awesome jam, driven by Mike and Page, is spacious but has real legs. "Sparks"-like tease at about 14:30. A fan favorite. |
1998-08-08 | Hood | Columbia, MD | 12:36 | Very strong Page/Trey interplay, some good variation by Trey, and uniquely '98 sound combine for a quality '98 "Hood." |
1998-08-12 | Ramble On | Vernon, NY | 12:24 | After extending the normal outro, Trey brings back the bridge riff to usher in a calming, cyclical groove in vintage '98 style until -> "Slave". |
1998-08-12 | Slave | Vernon, NY | 11:39 | -> in from "Ramble On." "Those Were The Days" and "Ramble On" teases. Page is great on the Fender-Rhodes before shifting back to piano with Trey leading a spirited finale that has a bit more gusto than most '97s. |
1998-08-12 | Mike's | Vernon, NY | 18:02 | Opening with a thick, soupy groove, this long single jam has several sections. The basic groove builds up until 7:15, when things settle down into more ambient/funky terrain. Around 12:00, led by Fish, the guys bring the big guns back out for a few minutes, before closing out with a grundge-like, repetive theme. |
1998-08-12 | Simple | Vernon, NY | 13:52 | A bluesy jam emerges at 9:00 on the back end of the standard outro. An unusual version which > to "Rift." |
1998-08-12 | Loving Cup | Vernon, NY | 8:59 | The band rocked so hard in this mid-second-set version that they needed to cool down and segued promptly after it into "Sleeping Monkey." No joke. |
1998-08-12 | YEM | Vernon, NY | 19:50 | "HYHU" and "Mission: Impossible" teases. "Who's Your Daddy?" VJ. (No B&D.) |
1998-10-30 | Antelope | Las Vegas, NV | 16:48 | A minute of exploratory action (6:20 - 7:20) in a jam that otherwise is straightforward. But following "Rocco" there several minutes of eerie and spacey effects and chanting by Trey before the final closing. |
1998-10-30 | Stash | Las Vegas, NV | 7:16 | Straightforward "Stash" begins Set II (rare Set II placement for "Stash") and has a superb -> to "Manteca," the first of 3 consecutive segues (->) in this set. |
1998-10-30 | Manteca | Las Vegas, NV | 3:26 | -> in from "Stash." Extended "Manteca" with an ambient feel rocks along and -> to "Tweezer." |
1998-10-30 | Tweezer | Las Vegas, NV | 16:50 | Siiiiiiick Trey soloing! "Manteca" and "You Better Believe It Baby" teases. |
1998-10-30 | NICU | Las Vegas, NV | 5:37 | -> in from "Tweezer." Straightforward "NICU" completes a string of great segues (->), comes to an end and > to a classic '98 ambient "Jam." |
1998-10-30 | Jam | Las Vegas, NV | 4:07 | > in from "NICU." One of a number of great '98 ambient jams, this one emerges from "NICU" and > to "Prince Caspian." |
1998-10-31 | Sneakin' Sally | Las Vegas, NV | 10:56 | Funky '98-style jam emerges, where Page on clavinet is the star. Rocks along until morphing into some more ambient, serene space, before a fantastic -> to "CDT." |
1998-10-31 | CDT | Las Vegas, NV | 8:22 | -> in from "Sneakin' Sally." The -> is fantastic, and this is an excellent "CDT." It's "Type I," but very solid. |
1998-10-31 | Weekapaug | Las Vegas, NV | 11:45 | A pretty wild "Type I" jam with a super-charged ending that threatens to get out of control, but is ultimately well-executed. |
1998-10-31 | R&R | Las Vegas, NV | 13:12 | Debut as part of the Velvet Underground's "Loaded" Halloween costume. First run is an upbeat rocker with an extended jam that stays pretty close to the "Rock And Roll" theme and groove. Released on Live Phish Vol. 16. |
1998-10-31 | Lonesome Cowboy Bill | Las Vegas, NV | 10:05 | Fiery jam segues into a magnificently enchanting, psychedelic horizon. |
1998-10-31 | Wolfman's | Las Vegas, NV | 30:11 | Haunting Halloween Masterpiece. At 9:50, the jam descends from low intensity funk mode into 14 minutes of dark, chilling, effects-laden improvisation. A few movements to resurface are rebuffed, and the jam remains deep down until 24:00 when a bluesy shuffle provides some cathartic relief. -> to "Piper" which further brightens the mood. |
1998-11-24 | Tweezer | New Haven, CT | 17:15 | Fall '98 had some truly awesome versions! |
1998-11-24 | Possum | New Haven, CT | 13:33 | -> in from "Tweezer." Extended jam that grows dissonant and off-key and also incudes "Born On The Bayou" teases. |
1999-07-09 | Mike's | Columbia, MD | 17:28 | Awesome, improvisational version which proves that "Mike's" doesn't have to have 2 jams to kick ass. Immediately breaking into a lilting, un-"Mike's"-like groove, the jam settles down, gets punchy, settles again, all with a sense that tension is loading. The release begins at 13:30, and by 14:30, a melodic hose-storm is unleashed, repleat with "Sweet Emotion" vocal quotes and jamming. |
1999-07-16 | Mike's | Holmdel, NJ | 12:20 | A solid, mellow groove jam, with a fair amount of "Manteca"-like melodic playing from Trey. The energy level gradually builds, but the jam is generally pretty even sloped. Although there is a brief 2nd jam, it's little more than a quiet transition to "Hydrogen." |
1999-07-16 | Weekapaug | Holmdel, NJ | 10:36 | A nice funky breakdown groove with strong Mike and Page concludes with Trey teasing "2001" several times before returning to "Weekapaug" to wrap up. |
1999-07-17 | Tube | Volney, NY | 7:00 | Trey takes the melody while Mike punctuates the funk groove with great slapping. |
1999-07-17 | Tweezer | Volney, NY | 19:02 | Jamming is groovy, and very cool at times (MIKE!), but still kinda dull for stretches. Good -> "Have Mercy" |
1999-07-17 | Taste | Volney, NY | 12:25 | -> in from "Have Mercy." Similar to, but more stretched out than 7/3/99. Yet it doesn't have quite the melodic bliss. |
1999-07-17 | Jam | Volney, NY | 2:22 | A brief blues jam is played while guest artist Son Seals leaves the stage. > to "DwD." |
1999-07-17 | DwD | Volney, NY | 23:34 | Blistering hot straightforward jam eventually runs out of fuel and gasps for breath for a stretch before regaining momentum and focus and returning to "DwD." |
1999-07-17 | Sneakin' Sally | Volney, NY | 9:40 | -> in from "Wolfman's Brother." Great relaxed jam emerges from the back end of this "Sally." Gathers energy with Page and Trey adding nicely to a solid Mike/Fish groove. > to "Timber (Jerry)." |
1999-07-17 | Timber Ho | Volney, NY | 9:58 | Even further removed from the typical "Timber" jam than the '98 offering, this version is quite subdued and passively brooding. It gains momentum and power, but has none of the fury of earlier years. A high quality version nonetheless. |
1999-07-18 | Gin | Volney, NY | 19:33 | A nice, Page-led groove develops on the back end of the standard "Gin" jam. |
1999-07-18 | BOTT | Volney, NY | 5:07 | With the Del McCoury Band. Another great bluegrass version. |
1999-07-18 | Reba | Volney, NY | 17:04 | Concentrated, quiet, and introspective play emerges from the composed section. Mike and Fish maintain a steady beat, and Trey's delicate soloing is complimented by really great work from Page. Super bass and powerful piano underscore great guitar and percussion, the jam breaking free to become less groove-oriented and more euphoric. |
1999-07-18 | CDT | Volney, NY | 12:02 | Breaks into a nice pulsing groove at about 6:45. Doesn't stray as far from "CDT" as the 7/10/99 version, but still great. |
1999-07-18 | Runaway Jim | Volney, NY | 24:12 | Fantastic, groove-based jamming, and this "Jim" has several good ones. Released on Live Bait Vol. 5. |
1999-07-18 | Free | Volney, NY | 10:26 | -> in from a huge "Runaway Jim." Super lazy, summer-style Mike led jam. > to "Meatstick." |
1999-07-18 | Llama | Volney, NY | 7:28 | > in from "Axilla." Incredibly deft Trey playing combines with that unique '99 - '00 high pitched sound. Extended ending. |
1999-07-18 | Piper | Volney, NY | 25:02 | After a long patient intro, this "Piper" rages until about 14:00 when the jam shifts to a funky, multi-faceted rhythmic groove. This version has much more exploratory jamming than most '99 "Pipers," which tend to focus on a single layered groove. Cool Fishman percussion at the end leads to a -> to "Prince Caspian." |
1999-07-18 | Caspian | Volney, NY | 11:37 | -> in from a big "Piper." Easy-going Camp Oswego version has some soaring Trey guitar work and a cool transition to "Wilson." |
1999-07-18 | Wilson | Volney, NY | 4:17 | Deep into the last set of Camp Oswego, Wilson serves as the unfinished springboard to classic, ridiculous Phishery, preceding a Catapult and a series of narrations and jamlets that often rely on a Wilson-ish chug as a sort of home base. |
1999-07-18 | Catapult | Volney, NY | 4:43 | -> in from "Wilson." Following "Catapult," Trey launches into several minutes of banter about the Guiness Book of World Records, the "Book", and other topics. The droning vamp played since the latter part of "Wilson" abruptly changes and -> to "Smoke On The Water" Jam. |
1999-07-18 | Icculus | Volney, NY | 4:25 | -> in from "Catapult." Nice jam on this Deep Purple classic. Trey adds some amusing banter about musical similarities between this song and Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever." > to "Icculus." |
1999-12-10 | Tweezer | Philadelphia, PA | 14:15 | Extremely textural version that builds a "wall of sound." Doesn't do much IMO, but mileage varies. |
1999-12-10 | Jibboo | Philadelphia, PA | 14:09 | Careful and patient, the front half of this jam features strong Rhodes and synth work from Page, to create a twinkly and spacey vibe. The band slowly accelerates this "Gotta Jibboo" to a smooth pinnacle, with multiple, very pleasant peaks; other "Jibboos" peak harder, but this one peaks cleaner and longer than its '99 peers. A true culmination of groove-based jam ideas from fall and winter '99. |
1999-12-11 | SOAMule | Philadelphia, PA | 12:22 | Page Solo > Mike and Trey duet > full band jam that is really upbeat and rocking > conclusion. |
1999-12-11 | Boogie On | Philadelphia, PA | 7:50 | An extra funky jam kicks off a great set. |
1999-12-11 | Ghost | Philadelphia, PA | 19:06 | Endurance run through the Nevada desert crests the ridge into the Groom Lake Basin to behold the arrival of the mothership. [-> in from "Sally." Strong, slow tempo straightforward version with great Mike blasts off into deep outer space after 13:00 and explores the universe before -> to "2001."] |
1999-12-11 | 2001 | Philadelphia, PA | 15:23 | Emerges from "Ghost" and becomes a Haunted Space Halloween. Incredibly slow pace. This groove is one for the ages. |
1999-12-17 | BOAF | Hampton, VA | 10:47 | Decent jam that veers briefly away from the standard form. |
1999-12-17 | Jam | Hampton, VA | 5:05 | A spacey, quiet jam with building energy and effects from Page spans the gap between "The Moma Dance" and "Bug." |
1999-12-17 | SOAMelt | Hampton, VA | 17:22 | Rooted in the improvisational millennial groove of '99, although perhaps more repetitive and even plodding at times, Fishman largely leads the jam until about 8 mins in, when Trey adds some space vamp. At 10 mins in, Mike changes course, and the jam takes on a menacing, heavy tone, continuing to build in intensity until a looped-out groove arises, and slow rolls its way to a thunderous conclusion. Not as wonderfully weird as 12/4/99, or as funky and fun as the 12/31 performance, but still an incredible three versions to end the century. |
1999-12-18 | YEM | Hampton, VA | 22:47 | Very inspired jam segment! (No B&D.) |
1999-12-18 | 2001 | Hampton, VA | 17:34 | An average "2001" becomes great when a Frampton "Do You Feel Like We Do" jam takes over. Bob Mayonnaise on the keyboards ladies and gentlemen. |
1999-12-18 | Sand | Hampton, VA | 16:20 | Ambient roar. |
2000-05-21 | DwD | New York, NY | 20:23 | At 10:35, a very good quality, quick tempo groove-based jam emerges. It settles some and returns to "DwD" to conclude. |
2000-05-22 | Mango | New York, NY | 9:40 | Essentially straightforward, but the band nicely extends the ending jam segment by a few minutes. |
2000-05-22 | Ghost | New York, NY | 26:56 | Mesmerizing conglomeration of tesselation and coruscation. [Mellow groove with some spacey effects rolls along until 13:55, when the jam gets more rocking, then breaks into a fantastic and serene groove that swells and dissipates.] |
2000-05-23 | Ya Mar | New York, NY | 15:57 | An excellent rhythmic, snappy jam emerges with a lot of "DEG" and "Digital Delay Jam"-like sounds from Page and Trey at first (from about 8:30 - 11:00). Trey started the song in the wrong key (G) but asked Page to modulate to the key of A (the proper key) before his organ solo. |
2000-05-23 | Taste | New York, NY | 10:12 | A different version with a relaxed, toned-down feel throughout, but it is also deftly played with near precision. |
2000-09-08 | Jam | Albany, NY | 7:04 | An ambient jam develops by > on the back end of "Gin," and includes Fish on vacuum and Trey on drums. > to "Zero." |
2000-09-09 | My Friend | Albany, NY | 7:28 | A ghoulish sounding outro with delay bombs and no "Myfe" ending -> to a short "Jam" which continues the eerie jamming. |
2000-09-09 | Jam | Albany, NY | 1:26 | -> in "My Friend, My Friend." A short, ghostly and eerie jam is tacked on the back of "My Friend" and > to "Gumbo." |
2000-09-09 | Gumbo | Albany, NY | 9:45 | Another very tight full-band groove. |
2000-09-09 | Roggae | Albany, NY | 8:15 | Great Mike and Page in a version that opens up the jam section to interpretation rather than static melodic repetition. |
2000-09-09 | Jibboo | Albany, NY | 10:55 | Gorgeous Trey/Page interplay in the beginning of the jam; a nice, clean, somewhat straightforward build to a massive but abbreviated peak. |
2000-09-09 | Sand | Albany, NY | 19:50 | > from "The Curtain" with Michael Ray on trumpet and includes a "First Tube" tease. Ambient space jam before Michael Ray joins in. |
2000-09-09 | CTB | Albany, NY | 4:53 | Following some odd, onstage antics, Michael Ray, already on trumpet, moves from "Makisupa" > "CTB," adding extra oomph to the song's choice set changes, before the band breaks for an excellent "Funky Bitch." (Stick around for his contributions on show encore "Hood.") |
2000-09-09 | Funky Bitch | Albany, NY | 7:48 | With Michael Ray on trumpet! |
2000-09-15 | Piper | Hershey, PA | 20:08 | Fishman's tempo driven percussion work moves this dark other-worldly spacious jam along. |
2000-09-15 | Tube | Hershey, PA | 17:36 | This incredible jam begins with fast-paced funk, while the jam reprise moves into type 2 territory with a space groove before reaching a rocking climax. > into "When the Circus Comes". Longest Tube to date. |
2000-09-15 | Jam | Hershey, PA | 0:00 | See Tube Jamming Chart. |
2000-09-17 | Curtain With | Columbia, MD | 15:23 | Compared to the well-known bustout version from Deer Creek in 2000, this version features much better execution in The Curtain and a more competent delivery in the With jam. Trey's use of the Leslie during the early, "Rift" part of With is a cool plus, and the band coalesces nicely from there, for a snappy and spirited instrumental jam. |
2000-09-17 | Theme | Columbia, MD | 11:10 | > in from "R&R." At about 8:45, shifts away from "Theme" proper into Mike led, low key, pulsing groove. Some nice, subtle Page and Trey fills in this jam. All of a sudden, Fish and Mike shift gears with a great -> to "Dog Log." |
2000-09-17 | Mango | Columbia, MD | 18:19 | > in from a great "Theme From The Bottom" -> "Dog Log" pairing. Following an extended, straightforward outro, this improvisational version morphs into a rhythmic and pulsing groove that grows increasingly effects laden and eerie, before transitioning to "Free." |
2003-02-24 | Halley's | East Rutherford, NJ | 13:44 | Starting at a slower tempo than most versions, this "Halley's" has a groovy swing to it, as well as a few sprinkles of a darker sentiment. Excellent dynamics modulation, with the energy rising and falling. |
2003-02-24 | Twist | East Rutherford, NJ | 18:57 | An excellent, improvisational jam with a sinister sentiment enhanced by effects develops from the standard. |
2003-02-24 | Farmhouse | East Rutherford, NJ | 6:19 | This strong 2.0 version features great Fish and Trey teaming, some nice licks from Trey, and a cool fakeout ending of sorts. 2.0 doubters should give this surprising encore selection a spin to cleanse their senses. |
2003-07-30 | Scents and Subtle Sounds | Camden, NJ | 29:00 | At times dark and brooding, this wildly improvisational jam on balance is remarkably upbeat and very exploratory. |
2003-07-30 | CDT | Camden, NJ | 10:05 | Shorter than some, but a lot more improvisational than most versions, much of it with a dark sentiment. |
2003-07-30 | Twist | Camden, NJ | 22:52 | Very improvisational and thrilling jam with excellent dynamic modulation. The intensity builds and ebbs repeatedly, and at times has an "On Broadway"-like vibe. It ends with an upbeat sentiment that gradually dwindles. |
2003-07-30 | YEM | Camden, NJ | 26:22 | Superb jamming in a version whose energy never quits. |
2003-12-01 | Wolfman's | Albany, NY | 15:22 | Funks around nicely for a good stretch, but when Page hits the piano at 8:50, it's release time in a big, big way. Then the jam really expands into a euphoric, overdrive celebration. Call it "Type I" on steroids. |
2003-12-01 | Tweezer | Albany, NY | 17:31 | Very odd version. Trey's not really present for the most part. Excellent segue into "2001" though. |
2003-12-01 | 2001 | Albany, NY | 8:15 | Liquid '03 Mike goodness with strong interplay with Trey. |
2003-12-01 | YEM | Albany, NY | 23:58 | An order of magnitude better than the typical "YEM" since 2003, a strong jam segment peaks excellently, not once but TWICE, before the bass and drums section kicks in. |
2003-12-02 | Piper | Boston, MA | 15:27 | Dissonant high power jam in this 20th Anniversary show version. |
2003-12-02 | R&R | Boston, MA | 17:59 | Very good, multi-section version breaks from "R&R" into a pulsing, funky and bluesy groove. From there, it settles with solid instrumental effects, before regaining momentum and -> to "Weekapaug." (w/o any "Mike's"). |
2003-12-02 | Boogie On | Boston, MA | 6:10 | 20th Anniversary edition. The jam shifts in the last minute to set up the segue into "Cities". |
2003-12-02 | Maze | Boston, MA | 16:53 | > in from "Cities." Technically "Type I," yes. But this is one of the most unusual, cool versions ever performed, starting with Page's section, and continuing into Trey's. You gotta hear this one! |
2004-06-17 | ASIHTOS | Brooklyn, NY | 6:22 | Debut opens the Summer '04 Tour. The jam section is high energy, but also dark and gnarly, with great playing by Trey |
2004-06-17 | Moma | Brooklyn, NY | 14:50 | Strong but typical jam cools off gradually beginning around 9:20 and a cool, choppy jam emerges, that many fans may love. Transitions pleasantly but not magnificently into -> "Free". |
2004-06-17 | Free | Brooklyn, NY | 10:18 | -> in from an epic "Moma Dance." Sick bass by Mike. Maybe the best straightforward version. Great interplay by Trey and Mike. |
2004-06-17 | 46 Days | Brooklyn, NY | 16:24 | Moves beyond "46 Days" into a swirling, more sedate segment. Jam then picks up a nice rhythmic pulse and great groove. The jam grows increasingly energized and intense, with a textbook -> to "Possum." |
2004-06-17 | Suzy | Brooklyn, NY | 18:23 | Multifaceted jam follows the final verse and refrain. At first rhythmic and plucky, it gradually becomes more intense, then grows slightly spacey, and intensifies again before finally settling with a > to "Axilla." |
2004-06-17 | 2001 | Brooklyn, NY | 9:02 | Second jam is what good 2.0 is all about: the band is locked in and the interplay is fresh and creates an environment for dancing hippies to flourish. |
2004-06-17 | Weekapaug | Brooklyn, NY | 11:53 | After a quick "Mainstreet" tease, the jam briefly settles before picking up a serious head of steam, transforming KeySpan Park in Brooklyn into a blistering and raging quick-tempo rock fest. |
2004-06-20 | Waves | Saratoga Springs, NY | 16:00 | Although the jam between verses is standard "Waves" fare, the band moves into an excellent 7 minute plus jam following the final verse that is rhythmic and upbeat, with multiple movements and "Maze" teases. |
2004-06-20 | Drowned | Saratoga Springs, NY | 21:52 | A high quality, multi-faceted jam with building intensity. The later jam segment sounds somewhat like the jam portion of "Kill Devil Falls," which wouldn't emerge for another 4 years. |
2004-06-20 | Seven Below | Saratoga Springs, NY | 19:08 | The original Seven Below>Ghost combo. This one starts out very dark and brooding, and it slowly rolls into an up-tempo romp! |
2004-06-20 | Twist | Saratoga Springs, NY | 20:06 | -> in from "Ghost." Excellent multi-section jam starts at 5:45, breaking into a funky, pulsing section. The jam picks up a nice swinging vibe, intensifies and grows "HOSE"-like, then ends with a brief power rocking > fade. |
2004-08-14 | WotC | Coventry, VT | 15:19 | Jam breaks from the standard at 11:00 into a mellow groove that builds energy and > to "Runaway Jim." |
2004-08-14 | Runaway Jim | Coventry, VT | 12:23 | Very improvisational, "Type II" version with a -> to a very improvisational, "Type II" "Gotta Jibboo." |
2004-08-14 | Jibboo | Coventry, VT | 15:23 | The yang to 4/16/04's yin. Tight playing for '04. Dark and grimy up front, but once it pushes through to the heavens this "Gotta Jibboo" is breathtaking. |
2004-08-14 | Antelope | Coventry, VT | 13:10 | Jam segment rages practically non-stop, and Tom Marshall assists with the "Rocco" lyrics. |
2004-08-14 | Bag | Coventry, VT | 20:07 | Nimbly textured and surgically precise like the big '97 "Bags?" No. Highly improvisational, well played AND a great listen? Absolutely. This version is MUST-HEAR, like 11/21/97, 12/30/97 and 9/14/99. The Coventry "Bag" is full of "2.0-style jamming," is played very well overall, and it's highly listenable. -> to "46 Days." |
2004-08-14 | Bowie | Coventry, VT | 12:57 | Trey talks about writing "David Bowie" for 4 1/2 minutes before the song - well worth hearing. The jam itself is pretty decent with a nice little shift to major mode and an intense ending. |
2004-08-14 | Twist | Coventry, VT | 16:36 | A decent jam develops which has an underlying Mike and Fish fueled groove that continues almost throughout. Trey at times uses a lot of distortion, and his seeming lack of direction gives the jam a disjointed feel. Great -> to "The Wedge." |
2004-08-14 | Stash | Coventry, VT | 20:42 | While the composed section is far from spotless, the jam is very good and multi-dimensional, including a nice move to major mode followed by some great exploration. Unfinished with a > to "Free." |
2004-08-14 | Free | Coventry, VT | 9:54 | Some sweet Mike bass, then gets very quiet with just Mike and Trey playing, then Fish and Page jump back in. |
2004-08-14 | Drowned | Coventry, VT | 26:06 | Very raw in parts (at least Trey), but a serious piece of improvisation nonetheless. At the 7 minute mark, the band gets very quiet and almost stops. Trey plays solo for a stretch, and briefly addresses the crowd. Around 12:30, the other band mates rejoin in a very upbeat and rocking jam that accelerates into near fury by 21:30. |
2004-08-15 | CDT | Coventry, VT | 13:46 | Extremely improvisational version which leaves "CDT" behind near the end and -> to "Possum." |
2004-08-15 | DwD | Coventry, VT | 19:02 | Very unusual version. The first jam segment is strange, spacey, and Trey sounds off-key at times. Then there's a second jam following the closing riff (without vocal refrain) which has some interesting moments and is pretty soulful. |
2004-08-15 | SOAMelt | Coventry, VT | 31:04 | Skip the composed section (ugly) and go straight to the jam (released on Live Bait Vol. 5), which is excellent, extended and improvisational. The final 6 spacey minutes are a combination of sad, eerie and haunting, with a hint of optimism near the end. Unfinished with a -> to "Ghost." One of many great jams from the morass of Coventry. |
2004-08-15 | Ghost | Coventry, VT | 17:30 | Through a crack in the fabric of space-time a horde of flaming orange locusts cascaded down the fetid slope of manure, became a cyclone of debris, limbs, and offal in the muddy bowl then coalesced into a sheet of light which rapidly withdrew upslope back into the void of infinity. [-> in from a strong "SOAM." The jam breaks into an angry, rocking groove that grows dissonant, tension-filled, and includes Trey's eerie yelling and digi-guitar effects.] |
2004-08-15 | Piper | Coventry, VT | 9:25 | Blistering, fierce, machine-gun Trey, akin at times to Hendrix at his best! |
2009-03-06 | BDTNL | Hampton, VA | 6:05 | Debut. |
2009-03-07 | BOTT | Hampton, VA | 8:43 | First "BOTT" of 3.0 sets a good precedent, although it would be surpassed by a number of subsequent versions (see below). Really, the band is playing "BOTT" better in 3.0 than previously, with the notable exception of 2/28/03. |
2009-03-07 | It's Ice | Hampton, VA | 9:09 | Spacey, effects-laden jam with Page on synthesizer instead of piano. |
2009-03-07 | R&R | Hampton, VA | 12:21 | Departs from standard "R&R" at about 8:30, in a delicate, melodic foray that sets up nicely for segue to "Limb By Limb." |
2009-05-31 | Ocelot | Boston, MA | 7:30 | Debut. |
2009-05-31 | Tweezer | Boston, MA | 13:09 | "Theme from the Bottom" jam for a bit. |
2009-05-31 | Light | Boston, MA | 4:42 | Debut. |
2009-06-02 | Possum | Wantagh, NY | 8:00 | Sweet Page B-3 solo at the beginning of the jam, followed by Trey. |
2009-06-02 | KDF | Wantagh, NY | 7:05 | Debut. |
2009-06-02 | Hood | Wantagh, NY | 17:20 | After a delicate start, the jam slows even more, introducing synthesizer at 9:00 and then develops into a billowing ambient cloud before gradually shifting back to "Hood" at 12:15 and continues to build with some unusually tense notes from Trey. Very unique. |
2009-06-12 | KDF | Manchester, TN | 15:18 | The first "Type II" version. Led by Trey, the jam slowly drifts from the typical blues-rock into a whammy-filled, major-key groove not unlike the famous 7/10/99 "CDT" in spots. Ends with a -> to "Free." |
2009-08-16 | BDTNL | Saratoga Springs, NY | 20:02 | Exploratory "Type II" jam which starts to peel away from "BDTNL" around 6:00. Rocking at first, it grows somewhat dark and dissonant, brightens again, and ends in a repetitive and spacey groove which -> to "Twenty Years Later." |
2009-10-30 | Wolfman's | Indio, CA | 11:36 | Really no funk section at all. Instead, an upbeat rocker with super Page and great Mike triumphs, recedes, and morphs into eerie, effects-laden space for 3 minutes before > to a great (short) "Piper." |
2009-10-30 | Piper | Indio, CA | 11:03 | One of the best (short) versions ever, certainly for "3.0." Several distinct movements in the jam and all band members contribute well. "She Saved My Soul"-like vocal jam towards the end. |
2009-10-31 | Loving Cup | Indio, CA | 7:23 | This version is FIERCE, what with horns and soulful backup vocals! |
2009-10-31 | BDTNL | Indio, CA | 11:46 | Standard "BDTNL" concludes and the band breaks into an upbeat and rocking outro jam that > to "Fluffhead." |
2009-10-31 | Suzy | Indio, CA | 11:37 | Sharon Jones and Saundra Williams on backup vocals, and Dave Guy, David Smith, and Tony Jarvis on trumpet, trombone, and saxophone, respectively. Outstanding, stretched out (but otherwise straightforward) version. |
2009-11-01 | BOTT | Indio, CA | 3:20 | Acoustic version from Festival 8. |
2009-11-01 | McGrupp | Indio, CA | 8:21 | Gorgeous acoustic version from Festival 8. |
2009-11-01 | Undermind | Indio, CA | 7:45 | Exceptionally strong playing from Trey in this roaring "Type I" version. |
2009-11-01 | Light | Indio, CA | 15:19 | A dissonant/loop jam loaded with spacey effects emerges from "Light" proper. Part of a great sandwich with "Mike's" and "Slave." |
2009-12-02 | Light | New York, NY | 16:53 | A multi-section improvisational heavyweight, which includes rhythmic, chordal play, upbeat major mode exploration, and a return to minor mode rocking with dynamic variation and great contributions by Page, Mike and Trey. |
2009-12-04 | YEM | New York, NY | 21:02 | Strong jam segment and well-played all around. |
2010-06-20 | Drowned | Saratoga Springs, NY | 13:11 | Nice jam that bounces along before slowing to a more spacious sentiment that sets up nicely for a transition into "Swept Away/Steep." |
2010-08-05 | DwD | Berkeley, CA | 14:52 | A pulsing and driving jam settles down into a snappy, rhythmic and curiously enchanting section that > "Free." |
2010-08-06 | Cities | Berkeley, CA | 11:04 | Some incredible playing by Mike and Page in this extended version that gets into a spell-binding, enchanting groove. A fantastic version that transitions (oddly and arguably abruptly) to "Moma Dance." |
2010-08-06 | R&R | Berkeley, CA | 14:29 | Great, multi-faceted jam with solid band interplay. |
2010-08-06 | Mike's | Berkeley, CA | 8:07 | Calling this jam straightforward would be missing the point. The jam is intense and powerful, with strong playing by Page and Trey. The jam actually bears similarity to the excellent crop of groove-based jams in "Mike's" versions from '00. |
2010-08-06 | Simple | Berkeley, CA | 15:30 | Intensely melodic, gorgeous, charming version that gets repetitious and nearly transcendent. |
2010-08-07 | Foam | Berkeley, CA | 9:03 | > in from "AC/DC Bag." Like the old days. A very fine version. Great collective playing during the build-up. |
2010-08-07 | Light | Berkeley, CA | 17:13 | Outstanding and textured play throughout the entire jam, which also includes an amazing ebb and flow of intensity. Must-hear |
2010-08-07 | Suzy | Berkeley, CA | 10:42 | Band adds a nice 4 plus minute jam to the back end of "Suzy." Trey teases "Living After Midnight." > to "Slave." |
2010-08-07 | Slave | Berkeley, CA | 11:34 | Ends Set II of a great show, following a jammed-out "Suzy." Beautifully played with a long, gradual build. Like 11/14/97, it's the ride, not the destination that matters most here. |
2010-08-17 | BDTNL | Wantagh, NY | 14:14 | Very good, multi-section "Type II" jam which starts off rocking, quiets down, then rebuilds with an upbeat sense. |
2010-08-17 | Caspian | Wantagh, NY | 5:20 | Unique and unusual reading of the "Caspian" jam. Quality over quantity here. |
2010-10-29 | Cities | Atlantic City, NJ | 8:49 | All four team up in the well-played, extended jam that gets somewhat spacey at the very end. |
2010-10-29 | Sand | Atlantic City, NJ | 13:11 | > out of "Punch You in the Eye." Another strong version with a dynamic groove and tension-filled playing from Trey. Also includes an upbeat, "type 2" outro jam that seems to hint at "Cool it Down" and a -> into "Carini." |
2010-10-29 | Fluffhead | Atlantic City, NJ | 15:44 | Despite more frequent rotation from 2009 - 2012, this song continues to challenge the band from a precision perspective. In this strong modern version, Fluff's Travels and The Chase are largely free of mistakes, but then the band hits a few bumps in Who Do? We Do! Clod is solid, with call and response action between Page and Trey, followed by nice Fish and Mike support during Page's solo. Ending this second set with emphasis, Arrival is extended compared to most versions, showing a spirited, enthused band, with strong playing by Trey and Fish, taking a couple of extra victory laps. |
2010-10-30 | CDT | Atlantic City, NJ | 5:39 | "CDT" -> "Whole Lotta Love" > "CDT" from the Zeppelin fest. |
2010-10-30 | Whole Lotta Love | Atlantic City, NJ | 1:14 | -> in from "CDT." Brief jam, part of Led Zeppelin oriented thematic set. -> back to "CDT." |
2010-10-30 | CDT | Atlantic City, NJ | 1:37 | -> in from "Whole Lotta Love." Returns to "CDT" to conclude. |
2010-10-30 | Wolfman's | Atlantic City, NJ | 10:13 | A nice vocal jam is followed by some great "Manteca"-like jamming played in a funky, staccato and rhythmic style. The jam never builds to the typical release, but retains a rhythmic focus and -> to "Undermind." |
2010-10-30 | Undermind | Atlantic City, NJ | 7:49 | -> from a notable "Wolfman's Brother." Cohesive, full-band effort in this solid "Type I" version. > to "Bathtub Gin." |
2010-10-30 | 2001 | Atlantic City, NJ | 10:24 | Want to know what Mike Gordon can do in the 3.0 era? Look no further than the second jam in this Cactus masterpiece. This is a dancing beast. A top 3.0 version. |
2010-10-30 | Bowie | Atlantic City, NJ | 12:07 | A couple of brief major mode departures lend some melodic variation and grace to this one. |
2010-10-31 | Stash | Atlantic City, NJ | 13:28 | Features an unusually melodic, major mode groove that builds beautifully before returning to the norm with great tension. |
2010-10-31 | Wilson | Atlantic City, NJ | 7:56 | Looney vocalizations preceding "BLAT BOOM" lead to an extra-large, type 1.5 version, in which the band quickly hooks into a thematic blues rock riff. They collectively toy around with the riff, pushing the idea into a soupy mire, before dipping into a mystical Halloween outro where Trey recapitulates the blues rock riff over lush organ drones. |
2010-10-31 | Julius | Atlantic City, NJ | 9:17 | With horn and percussion accompaniment. Fantastic version. The percussion and horns are added in a particularly complementary arrangement that makes this one a real standout. |
2010-12-30 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 18:16 | Kind of a mixed bag until this spell-bindingly intricate, spectacular "staccato-esque" improvisation takes over. |
2011-07-03 | Wilson | Watkins Glen, NY | 7:31 | The whole band is much looser than normal when they break into the solo, sounding more like a prodding "Carini" jam than "Wilson". Mike is especially eager to push the band into new harmonic (and inharmonic) territories, and the other members accept his challenge with expertly-tuned ears, adeptly following his unpredictable turns on the bass, and delivering a "Wilson" unlike any other version before or after. > to an equally inspired "Mound". |
2011-07-03 | Mound | Watkins Glen, NY | 8:01 | Great version which includes an unusual straightforward outro jam. |
2011-07-03 | ASIHTOS | Watkins Glen, NY | 10:15 | Stunning exploratory "Type II" version. The jam departs "ASIHTOS" at 4:00 and arrives in a desert haze where the band proceeds to lose itself in a mirage-filled dream, wandering deliriously until emerging in heavenly bliss at 7:00. Led by Mike, this serene music patiently morphs into ambient space, and gradually fades to silence with no return to "ASIHTOS." |
2011-07-03 | Reba | Watkins Glen, NY | 16:07 | Great Trey and Mike from the jump, the jamming soulful and melodic. Awesome Page accents characteristically strong Fish, as the jam morphs into extended "Dave's Energy Guide" teasing. The band then crafts an atypical, and totally welcome groove. A pretty powerful build seems to break convention, with the whistling section dissolving into goofy antics which bleed into the noise informing the > into "David Bowie." |
2011-07-03 | No Quarter | Watkins Glen, NY | 9:32 | Strong, effects-laden playing that pushes a psychedelic edge to match the dark heaviness in the song's lyrics. Firm and confident playing leads to a satisfying peak; a prototypical type I "No Quarter." Fans of this version should also check out 8/17/11. |
2011-12-30 | Piper | New York, NY | 15:16 | A rhythmic, swirling, and improvisational jam develops with nice work by Page. Becomes serene and dreamy towards the conclusion and transition to "Twist." Really an excellent version. |
2011-12-30 | 2001 | New York, NY | 7:23 | On the shorter side but chock-full of fresh ideas. The second jam has some sweet stop-start and Trey drops one of the sweetest tones around. No dull moments here. |
2011-12-31 | Steam | New York, NY | 10:35 | Performed during the NYE "gag" (stunt), this exceptional version ends with a ferocious "Llama"-like jam leading up to "Auld Lang Syne." |
2012-07-03 | Sand | Wantagh, NY | 10:50 | Each band member puts their stamp on this one in a great collective effort, which includes an "Izabella" tease. Shifts at 6:50 to allow Page to lead on the Wurlitzer as Trey lays back. Ends with staccato playing from Page, loops, and a -> into an exceptional "Golden Age." |
2012-07-03 | Golden Age | Wantagh, NY | 13:15 | -> in from "Sand." There is fantastic interplay between Page and Trey throughout this jam, and Mike also does his part to punctuate the groove. Concludes with a beautiful ambient passage led by Page on the Wurlitzer. A top "GA." |
2012-07-03 | Antelope | Wantagh, NY | 11:54 | Rhythmic changes, mode changes, suspensions, and melodic variation are key elements which make a version, and thus more interesting than the typical "average-great" one. This strong old-school, new-sound version uses all of these. |
2012-07-07 | Gin | Saratoga Springs, NY | 11:50 | > in from "Peaches en Regalia." Nothing like some good "Gin" on a nice summer night. This "Type I" version is 3.0-style HOSE at its best. Great nimble and directed playing by Trey later in the jam. |
2012-07-07 | Caspian | Saratoga Springs, NY | 6:17 | > in from "BDTNL." Band wastes no time getting beyond typical the "Caspian" jam , instead settling on a beautifully delicate, but substantive groove that unexpectedly segues -> to "SOAMule." |
2012-12-30 | Divided | New York, NY | 15:55 | Minor flubs in the composed section notwithstanding, a very good jam segment, and long for 3.0. |
2012-12-30 | BOTT | New York, NY | 9:00 | Crescendo-oriented jam, but this one has a false peak followed by bigger exclamation point. |
2012-12-30 | DwD | New York, NY | 19:00 | Phenomenal improvisation. Dark, bright, introspective, spacious, beautiful, powerful, riveting - all applicable descriptors for this far-ranging, exploratory and must-hear version. > to "Twenty Years Later." |
2012-12-30 | Carini | New York, NY | 14:43 | Righteous, improvisational version bucks the recent trend of mode-shifting to an upbeat groove, instead sticking to dark and eerie themes that evoke a Pink Floyd-like sentiment. Very exploratory, must-hear material. |
2012-12-30 | Slave | New York, NY | 10:33 | Great Mike/Trey interplay early in the jam, a serene middle, and soaring finale to end a very strong 2nd set. |
2012-12-30 | Hood | New York, NY | 12:01 | Great interplay, but what really stands out is varied and well-executed soloing by Trey as this "Hood" builds up power. |
2013-07-05 | Bowie | Saratoga Springs, NY | 11:33 | -> in from "Cities." Very solid and interesting "Bowie" that shifts back and forth between minor and major modes several times. Upbeat jam contrasts nicely with the more "classic" 12/28/12 version. |
2013-07-05 | Light | Saratoga Springs, NY | 15:07 | A chaotic atonal interlude from the standard jam gives way to a pulsating, reverberating major mode section that settles into a melodic space before -> to "Mango." |
2013-07-05 | 46 Days | Saratoga Springs, NY | 9:10 | The jam settles down gradually, then Trey and Fish have a little back-and-forth jam, followed by a Page/Mike back-and-forth jam which -> cleanly to "Steam." |
2013-07-05 | Steam | Saratoga Springs, NY | 10:21 | Perfect segue out of "46 Days." Powerful, popular version, yet that is also controversial, given Trey's heavy reliance on the Digitech Whammy pitch shifter to call entire schools and species of whales. |
2013-07-06 | Tube | Saratoga Springs, NY | 6:43 | Begins with the usual Page-led funk on the clav, settles briefly, and picks back up with Trey leading the way. Later, Trey reverts to a rhythmic role as a second, different groove is explored before the closing guitar solo. Here's to more "Tubes" like this in the future. > to "Julius". |
2013-07-06 | SOAMelt | Saratoga Springs, NY | 18:17 | Very exploratory jam that contrasts sharply with the "old school" style 8/18/12 version. This one more closely resembles standouts from '96 - '04, and includes mode modulation. Messy closing section; needs practice. |
2013-07-06 | Carini | Saratoga Springs, NY | 12:08 | Serious "HOSE"! Jam quickly breaks from the typically dark, throttling form into the now commonly upbeat, major mode style with good modulation of intensity. It then darkens in minor mode, lightens briefly and -> to "Architect." |
2013-07-12 | Reba | Wantagh, NY | 13:03 | Bizarre version. After swinging through the composed section, Trey augments his tone, and the pitch can easily be considered grating. But his playing remains distilled and deliberate, and, if nothing else, interesting. Any problems here, however, are offset by the others. Page is great. And Fish is a machine. But it is Mike who drives this version, his playing superb throughout, and, in spots, it seems as though he is running lead. |
2013-07-12 | Bowie | Wantagh, NY | 11:34 | Another good one with multiple minor/major mode shifts. There's also some nice rhythmic shifting and percussive coloring from Fish from 6:53 - 7:57. |
2013-07-12 | R&R | Wantagh, NY | 19:02 | All in all, a quality, multi-section jam. Mike, Page and Fish are strong throughout. If you can just mentally tone down Trey's frequent use of the pitch shifter, it's all good. > to "2001." |
2013-07-12 | Tweezer | Wantagh, NY | 12:33 | Page drives the jam into an outstanding peak in the final few minutes, and an excellent segue into "Cities" occurs with Fish playing the rhythm of the "Wedge." |
2013-10-23 | Gumbo | Glens Falls, NY | 5:12 | Standard Gumbo but a great, funky clav outro from Page. |
2013-10-23 | LxL | Glens Falls, NY | 7:46 | A very solid version all around which includes an unusual vocal jam type ending, setting up nicely for "I Didn't Know." |
2013-10-23 | Twist | Glens Falls, NY | 13:58 | The "Twist" jam itself includes some nice playing by Mike and Page. Then at 6:30 the jam breaks into some mellifluous, semi-"HOSE," which settles down into thoughtful space before rebuilding energy and then cyling down to end. |
2013-10-23 | Velvet Sea | Glens Falls, NY | 7:55 | Following a strong "Twist," this heartfelt rendering of "Wading" provides a graceful interlude before a powerful "Hood." |
2013-10-23 | Hood | Glens Falls, NY | 13:21 | Early in the jam, the band pays homage to the great Worcester '10 version. After some quieter musing, the jam picks up a really great head of steam and peaks in an exultant and powerful manner. |
2013-10-31 | Stash | Atlantic City, NJ | 10:05 | Excellent short "Stash" with mounting tension. Like a '93 or '94 version! |
2013-10-31 | Wingsuit | Atlantic City, NJ | 6:12 | Debut of the song leads off the "musical costume from the future" set at this Halloween show. |
2013-10-31 | Fuego | Atlantic City, NJ | 10:47 | Debut. First version hints at future jamming potential for "Fuego." |
2013-10-31 | Wombat | Atlantic City, NJ | 6:34 | Debut with "Abe Vigoda" and the Abe Vigoda Dancers. |
2013-10-31 | Winterqueen | Atlantic City, NJ | 6:23 | Phish debut includes Page nicely jumping around from the Fender-Rhodes to the B-3 to the piano, and a rock driven jam from Trey. |
2013-10-31 | Carini | Atlantic City, NJ | 18:41 | Serious heavyweight version kicks off with rhythmic and swirling playing. The jam brightens for a stretch, then IT builds and builds as the "HOSE" is turned on. Finally the jam recedes delicately as the spigot is turned to "off." |
2013-11-01 | Possum | Atlantic City, NJ | 11:04 | A quality "old school" version with a lot of good "Type I" variation in the jamming, building up to an intense peak. |
2013-11-01 | Twist | Atlantic City, NJ | 21:02 | The jam breaks away at 6:15, growing melodic and upbeat. Mike adds some great bass effects before a euphoric groove emerges. Then a fun "Under Pressure" jam develops, followed by beautiful low-key jamming. |
2013-11-01 | Makisupa | Atlantic City, NJ | 8:11 | Another fun, funky version with "Kush" and "Bush" chanting, lots of weirdness, and a few genuinely musically impressive passages interspersed here and there. |
2013-11-01 | Boogie On | Atlantic City, NJ | 5:42 | > from "Meatstick". There's some extra funky mustard on this one and it also includes alternate lyrics referencing bush and kush, as well as a tease of the "Theme from the Rockford Files." Ends with a > to "The Wedge". |
2013-11-01 | Sneakin' Sally | Atlantic City, NJ | 11:06 | A solid and funkified breakdown jam follows a good vocal jam and includes Trey banter near the ending. |
2013-11-02 | Theme | Atlantic City, NJ | 13:58 | As a standard "Theme" jam draws to a close, it morphs into a jam on the "Theme From Shaft" with amusing banter from Trey and Fish. Some good funky jamming follows the banter before returning to "Theme" to end. |
2013-11-02 | DwD | Atlantic City, NJ | 16:18 | The jam breaks into a good percussive and rocking groove, then it lightens and brightens, re-energizes, and -> to "Piper." |
2013-11-02 | Roggae | Atlantic City, NJ | 7:36 | A delicate and beautifully played version with a dreamy quality to it, but which also builds to a powerful peak. > to "Waves." |
2013-11-02 | Tweezer | Atlantic City, NJ | 15:22 | Very repetitive, melodic, spirited, funky jam... check. this. OUT! |
2013-12-29 | It's Ice | New York, NY | 8:21 | This one has a bad-ass "Ice" jam with some wild and rocking playing by all four. It almost sounds like some of the crazy versions from Spring '94 and also makes a nice clean return to "It's Ice." |
2013-12-29 | Gumbo | New York, NY | 6:31 | Another clavinet-led outro, but with added mind-scrambling from Trey. |
2013-12-29 | DwD | New York, NY | 18:27 | Great version which rocks along in familiar territory before becoming deep, dark and thought-provoking. The jam lightens in sentiment around 12:00, breaks into a power-rocking groove and makes a stately return to "DwD" to close. |
2013-12-29 | Carini | New York, NY | 15:16 | > in from "DwD" (only the 2nd time ever). A very good exploratory jam that retains a largely dark sentiment throughout, features great playing by Mike and Page, and concludes with brief "Woo" jamming. |
2013-12-31 | Reba | New York, NY | 12:09 | Back on the bus, pretty, direct, and straightforward play makes this "Reba" a highlight of a career moment. As usual, Fish is great, shuffling through various tempos and rhythmic shifts. Mike bounces around the room, and Page is particularly on point, his play lilting and airy. Trey opts for patient, sweeping sustain, which opens space for sweet syncopation, before alighting upon a perfect series of cascading notes, measured trilling, and the "note." |
2013-12-31 | Light | New York, NY | 16:49 | Exceedingly good version. As with most of the 2013 Holiday Run the version itself doesn't stand out with noticable highlights, but the entire version is well above average. Focused throughout with a great peak. |
2014-07-04 | Reba | Saratoga Springs, NY | 13:06 | Precise, delicate, and moving, very pretty play informs subdued jamming, featuring notable full-band interaction. Trey deftly shapes his tone, and the version becomes somewhat hypnotic and enchanting, with the musicians responding one to another before driving the jam to an expansive, emphatic peak. |
2014-07-04 | Fuego | Saratoga Springs, NY | 19:31 | The first improvisational "Fuego" works away from the song structure gradually, making a full break by 11:30 into some very nice, light and fluttery interplay. The intensity builds to a crescendo before smoothly sliding into "DwD." |
2014-07-05 | Carini | Saratoga Springs, NY | 10:56 | The jam breaks into the now predictable major mode section in a quieter and relaxed manner, which then builds energy and power and -> to "Waves." |
2014-07-05 | Piper | Saratoga Springs, NY | 13:22 | "Piper" is restored to some form of its former self, including an intro (short), bridge (short), and some good "Type I" jamming before breaking into "Type II" ground with nice rhythmic-based playing with strong Page, followed by a short Trey-led "hose" section. |
2014-07-05 | YEM | Saratoga Springs, NY | 21:01 | Lots of Mike in the groovy jam segment (though there's no peak). |
2014-07-08 | Tube | Philadelphia, PA | 6:07 | Mike gets down on this right away, Trey picks up quickly, and the whole jam locks in for several minutes. |
2014-07-08 | Fuego | Philadelphia, PA | 25:58 | Like the SPAC "Fuego" this jam begins with some quieter musings, followed by a couple of peaking sections. Then the jam turns rhythmic, funky, and almost jazz-like, with some nice Fish and Page, before finally dwindling to transition space. |
2014-07-08 | Hood | Philadelphia, PA | 13:08 | This "Hood" has a really great early section, especially between 5:25 - 9:25, where Mike, Page and Trey have this wonderful 3-way musical conversation, while Fish scales the percussion down to a very subtle but key rhythmic foundation. |
2014-07-09 | CDT | Philadelphia, PA | 16:41 | A far-ranging jam develops which initially shifts away from the standard around 4:30 to darker, minor mode play. From here, the jam briefly brightens, descends back into the twilight, then brightens considerably, before finally winding down with some rhythmic play. |
2014-07-09 | Wingsuit | Philadelphia, PA | 9:04 | Rearranged and redefined, this post-Halloween version--aka the "flown balls Wingsuit"--donning its now "traditional" form. Great full-band play (especially Fish) backs Trey's powerful soloing, which features dynamic modulation and a shift in pitch. Feels good. |
2014-07-09 | Mike's | Philadelphia, PA | 8:14 | The jam begins with some nice funky clav playing, normalizes, regains the funky legs, and features strong playing by Fish, as well as Trey, who deploys several guitar effects to alter his tone. |
2014-10-31 | SOAMule | Las Vegas, NV | 10:32 | Page and Trey in a rocking, guitar-accented piano showcase > ghoulish and spooky Halloween jamming > klezmer > weird chanting by Mike > conclusion. |
2014-10-31 | The Dogs | Las Vegas, NV | 4:10 | Promising debut. Following Laura Olsher's narration, Phish explodes into arena rock, replete with full-tilt guitar histrionics. |
2014-10-31 | Your Pet Cat | Las Vegas, NV | 4:25 | Debut. Following Laura Olsher's narration and "screaming" sound effects, a plucky Trey leads the band into a jam that, prior to "Tube's" resurgence, would not have sounded out of place in a, well, "Tube" jam. |
2014-10-31 | Martian Monster | Las Vegas, NV | 14:00 | Debut closes the legendary Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House Halloween set. This version includes extensive use of vocal samples, many of which are tempo and pitch-shifted, sounding at times like a "YEM" vocal jam performed by hamsters. After a crunchy encounter with the hungry landing committee, the longest version so far ends with a four minute fadeout of the spaceship blasting off towards the planet Mars. Your trip is short! |
2014-10-31 | Sand | Las Vegas, NV | 18:02 | A multi-section winner, featuring extended funk jamming, a rocking peak with a "School's Out" tease, and a great -> into "Tweezer Reprise." |
2014-11-01 | C&P | Las Vegas, NV | 11:04 | This version serves as the launching pad for one of the better sequences of songs from Fall 2014. It never turns into the full on shred fest that most expect out of this song. It sits on a loose funky groove based jam with some good synth work from Page. About 2/3's of the way through, Fishman escalates the tempo before they bring things back down and actually execute a smooth transition into Light. |
2014-11-01 | Twist | Las Vegas, NV | 11:13 | While never departing "Twist" proper, this version includes "Lengthwise" and "Manteca" quotes, several "Manteca" teases, solid "Type I" play, and a cerebral ending transition. |
2014-11-02 | Gin | Las Vegas, NV | 14:29 | A second and rocking section of strong "Type I" jamming helps to strengthen and elevate the build up and peak, giving this solid version a significant boost. |
2014-11-02 | Free | Las Vegas, NV | 8:03 | Strong "Type I" version with lots of amusing quoting from the previous night's "Martian Monster." |
2014-11-02 | CDT | Las Vegas, NV | 16:23 | After some "CDT"-like musings, the jam shifts after 6:00 to melodic major mode playing. At 9:30, the jam moves to lower octave, funky and semi-dissonant play, which continues until 13:40 when the upbeat theme returns, starts to boil over, then recedes into "Piper." |
2014-11-02 | Piper | Las Vegas, NV | 13:25 | A solid and "complete" version, breaking first to some growly, echo-filled play, which settles to a rhythmic foundation for Page and Trey to play off. At 7:45, the jam brightens in tone, but remains low intensity, then mellows further with quiet musings led by Page. |
2014-11-02 | YEM | Las Vegas, NV | 26:08 | While there's no Trey-led jam nor even a Bass & Drums section, the full band contributes, especially Page, to a raging improvisation that culminates with everyone on drums before the vocal jam concludes the festivities. |
2015-08-11 | Martian Monster | Philadelphia, PA | 4:16 | The band neatly -> into the second "Martian Monster" of this show from the ultra rare "Skin It Back." This version seamlessly combines "Skin It Back" themes into the Martian atmosphere, including two separate teases. Proving beyond doubt the presence of water on Mars, the spaceship hovers in a dense atmospheric cloud with an "ASIHTOS"-like quality, before jumping orbit with a loud, sampled scream and revisiting "Skin It Back" on the journey home. |
2015-08-11 | Bowie | Philadelphia, PA | 10:49 | Some variation away from the boiler plate standard, including a brief major mode modulation, nice Trey/Page/Mike interplay, and a solid tension-filled trill section put this one in the jam chart zone. |
2015-08-11 | SOAMule | Philadelphia, PA | 10:50 | Page solo with Trey comping on guitar > "Martian Monster" vocal quote > Fish with a spacey Marimba Lumina solo > klezmer > prayer-like Mike chanting > conclusion. |
2015-08-11 | Fuego | Philadelphia, PA | 16:19 | For the 2nd straight year, the Mann gets a big "Fuego." This jam begins in a subdued manner, then builds energy and feel-good sensibility before revisiting the "Fuego" theme with an uplifting spirit. |
2015-08-11 | 46 Days | Philadelphia, PA | 8:17 | The customary instrumental bridge has some filthy, raw tone, then there's a great compact spacey but upbeat jam at the end which covers a surprising amount of terrain and -> to "Taste." |
2015-08-12 | Cities | Philadelphia, PA | 10:35 | Trey's Echoplex leads the second straight solid "Cities" to some extended between-verses jamming, before the whole band picks up where he left off and explores a pulsing, minor mode space before the 'plex is left behind for a more straight-ahead jam that eventually fades out. |
2015-08-12 | Stash | Philadelphia, PA | 12:14 | Traditional "Stash" jam which dwells in the domain of darkness throughout, covers some different terrain in this realm, and ups the tension nicely before releasing its underworld grip. |
2015-08-12 | It's Ice | Philadelphia, PA | 9:03 | After a Jekyll (jam) and Hyde (composed section) take just four shows earlier, Trey redeems himself with the Mann "It's Ice". The whole band jumps into the jam feet first, coalescing around a "Manteca"-like theme for a few minutes during which Page goes absolutely nuts on his clavinet. |
2015-08-12 | Twist | Philadelphia, PA | 20:08 | Continuing a run of excellent renditions of "Twist", this exceptional version starts in more typical "Twist" jam territory before some more delicate playing is laid on a bed of bombs and loops. Like the Shoreline rendition, the band circles back to the main theme briefly before veering back off into a darker, fuzzier, mine-field of Mike before Fishman pushes Trey and Page towards nirvana and eventually the main theme once more. Must hear! |
2015-08-12 | Scents and Subtle Sounds | Philadelphia, PA | 14:43 | Only the second "S&SS" with intro (SBIX) in 3.0, this version shows few signs of rust and has excellent vocals throughout. The jam starts off largely in-the-box, but Trey and Mike slowly tug at the seams until Fishman pushes the rest of the band towards a throbbing two-note pattern and a brief peak before more clean vocals bring it back home. |
2015-08-21 | Simple | Watkins Glen, NY | 11:08 | The Magnaball-opening "Simple" wastes no time in getting the festivities underway. After some standard jamming in the typical chord progression, the band opts not to resolve to F and instead stays in B-flat, churning out a fuzzy, pulsating groove led by the rhythm section. |
2015-08-21 | Gin | Watkins Glen, NY | 22:50 | Exceptional version including diverse jam segments. Hard-edged rocking, murky funk, and melodic "hose" all feature in this top-shelf "Gin". |
2015-08-21 | CDT | Watkins Glen, NY | 18:15 | Yet another "CDT" boasting a post-refrain jam, and yet again does Phish deliver the goods. The jam starts off sparsely and rebuilds to a low-key, part melodic, part hard-edged passage with a "WTU?" tease before > Ghost. |
2015-08-21 | NMINML | Watkins Glen, NY | 11:45 | Doubles down on the Mann version with two separate rock-oriented jams, occasionally hinting at the climax of "CYHMK." Returns to the "NMINML" ending twice, then dissolves into an ambient fog and -> neatly into "Slave." |
2015-08-22 | Antelope | Watkins Glen, NY | 10:57 | With an exception or two (11/30/94, 8/11/04), "Antelope" always begins and ends the same way. What's in between separates the great from the typical. This version nicely strays from the ranch from 4:50 - 6:15, and includes a nasty, gnarly and tension-loaded push to the peak. |
2015-08-22 | 46 Days | Watkins Glen, NY | 14:15 | The jam moves beyond the rocking norm to some dark probing, before gradually shifting to serene and introspective exploration. After swelling to a modest peak, the jam -> to "BDTNL." |
2015-08-22 | Tweezer | Watkins Glen, NY | 17:39 | Fierce, punchy version that soars from the get-go, with Trey employing killer effects. The jam then plateaus, and then launches into melodic, major key mode for a while before dissolving into Caspian. |
2015-08-22 | Caspian | Watkins Glen, NY | 16:10 | The jam that emerges from this "Caspian" at around 6:00 is superb and must-hear Phish. Whether you think of this as a "Tweezer" or "Caspian" jam is a pedestrian concern; just enjoy this band kicking asses in its 33rd year!! |
2015-08-22 | Blaze On | Watkins Glen, NY | 16:01 | At the 7:45 mark, Trey's chording shifts this top-notch "Blaze On" from straight ahead bopping to deep melodic exploration for five minutes, when suddenly the band flips a switch and begins a psychedelic horror show filled with off-kilter intervals and eerie effects that last until the jam somehow careens swiftly into (and leaves explosive residue on) -> "Possum". |
2015-08-22 | Cities | Watkins Glen, NY | 7:22 | Another strong and typically funky "Cities" -> "Mind Left Body Jam" sandwich. |
2015-08-22 | Mind Left Body Jam | Watkins Glen, NY | 0:58 | -> in from "Cities." Last heard in 1998, 17 years earlier, this throwback recalls great moments throughout the band's history. |
2015-08-22 | Cities | Watkins Glen, NY | 0:57 | > in from "Mind Left Body Jam." Concluding section sets up a nice transition to a solid "Light." |
2015-08-22 | Light | Watkins Glen, NY | 15:57 | Particularly delicate playing from Trey in the first jam which is broken off by Fish in thunderous fashion. Second jam features calypso rhythms reminiscent of the Augusta version. |
2015-08-23 | Maze | Watkins Glen, NY | 9:30 | Trey's comping during Page's solo really adds good tension, then his shortish but intense solo puts this version in the "win" category. |
2015-08-23 | Stash | Watkins Glen, NY | 12:21 | Some good and varied playing, in addition to a warming modulation to major mode provide the differentiation that make this version well worth checking out. |
2015-08-23 | Martian Monster | Watkins Glen, NY | 8:32 | Although the first half of this version is played in a now predictable manner, the second half breaks orbit and heads into the Exosphere, nearly achieving true outer space exploration. Trey's heavy use of effects play a decisive role, as the band seems more intent on jamming this "Martian Monster" than focusing on funk or comic relief. This strong version eventually drones-out, and slides neatly into "DWD." |
2015-08-23 | WTU? | Watkins Glen, NY | 5:26 | -> in from "Scents & Subtle Sounds." Dies away to a near hush at the 2 minute mark, then wonderfully explodes back to life. The Kent '94 "Hood" version of "WTU?," and proof that you really can teach an old dog new tricks. |
2015-08-23 | Twist | Watkins Glen, NY | 7:45 | Though short, this "Twist" isn't lacking in creativity. As @n00b100 points out, the jam almost immediately pulls itself apart, leads to a Trey-Mike duet of sorts, and moves into a Chilling Thrilling Drive-In space that swings into a "My Soul"-esque take on the main riff, before a heavy metal theme morphs into "Immigrant Song" for a moment and segues -> Weekapaug. |
2015-12-31 | KDF | New York, NY | 13:38 | Around 6:30, Trey leads this one into the "Type II" zone, where it remains for the duration as it drifts through some low-key psychedelia before a > to "Piper". |
2015-12-31 | Twist | New York, NY | 16:17 | The final "Twist" of the year clinches its title for "Jamming Song of 2015". Like the Shoreline and Mann versions, after a relatively straightforward first jam, the band comes back home to the opening riff before taking off again. After some probing and warping and abstracting of the riff, things grow darker and sparser, before Fishman steps on the accelerator after the 11 minute mark, Trey goes Pink Floyd, Mike Meatballs, and Page plays Cap'n Crunch, leading to a Tweezer Reprise-like peak. |
2015-12-31 | NMINML | New York, NY | 21:02 | Awesome NYE prank version. The jam begins in a mellow zone with sprinkles of bliss. After a sparse, ambient section, Fish kicks things back into a solid groove, before "Drive-In Jam"-like effects and sounds overtake. Must-hear Phish. Note: a few minutes were probably pre-recorded as part of the NYE "gag". |
2015-12-31 | Blaze On | New York, NY | 15:35 | There's a reason Phish chose "Blaze On" as the song to open 2016, and this version delivers the celebratory goods. Like the past few versions, near the seven minute mark, Trey's chording sends the jam out into a world of spacey effects. These effects are reeled in quite quickly this time around, and Trey opts for a clean tone as he plucks beautiful trichords high on the neck and leads the band through a major mode passage that takes on a rough edge to it, grows percussive, and winds back to finish the tune. |
2015-12-31 | Bowie | New York, NY | 11:29 | Clever major/minor mode contrasting by Page and Trey at a couple of different points, plus some good old fashioned tension provide the finishing touches for a solid year for "Bowie." |
2016-01-02 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 21:36 | With thrilling, melodic contributions from each band member, this version requires repeated listenings to fully appreciate, and peaks wondrously well. |
2016-07-01 | CDT | Saratoga Springs, NY | 22:37 | Trey powers through "Carini" like a cold front, and a perfect storm ensues with "CDT." After breezing across familiar territory, the band embarks less upon a jam than an eclectic sort of symphony. The jam floats through a calm yet unsteady passage, atmospheric and effects-laden, before disembarking in comforting bliss, swapping instruments for a spell, and sailing into > "Caspian." |
2016-07-02 | Fuego | Saratoga Springs, NY | 12:27 | One of those jams that straddles the fence between "Type I" and "Type II". They never quite leave Fuego's structure, but some warm Trey interplay with Page make for a nice departure from the "Fuego" norm. |
2016-07-03 | SOAMule | Saratoga Springs, NY | 11:01 | Solid Page solo > Fish on Marimba Lumina > Weird, spacey electrified bass action from Mike > klezmer, prayer-like chanting from Mike > conclusion. |
2016-07-03 | Possum | Saratoga Springs, NY | 8:02 | Colorful bluesy licks. "Southern" swinging lines. Page and Fish might set this "Possum's" steady, swampy shuffle, but it's Trey who dominates this dense, extremely solid version. |
2016-07-03 | Moma | Saratoga Springs, NY | 17:34 | One of the longest and most improvisational "Momas" to date isn't just an extended exercise in vamping and grooving. The jam pushes further from shore at the 6 minute mark, modulates by the 9 minute mark, sails through an octave-alternating thump, and the moment doesn't end until Mike drops his bombs and Trey weaves his friends into > "Twist." |
2016-07-03 | Hood | Saratoga Springs, NY | 11:00 | Ever versatile, in the past few years, "Harry Hood" has spanned the range from a centerpiece improv-heavy jam to a lilting, polished encore. Here, after really cool, rarefied, and old-school stylings, Trey works this powerful classic to an archetypal peak. |
2016-07-10 | Winterqueen | Syracuse, NY | 8:57 | After a thoughtful, contemplative start, the jam gains momentum, moving into a faster paced, uplifting section with great, clear playing by Trey, and solidly grounded by Page. |
2016-08-26 | Ghost | Arrington, VA | 13:28 | That scene in The Right Stuff where the aboriginal shaman sends the cloud of fireflies to repair the heat shield on the Mercury capsule so John Glenn can safely re-enter Earth's atmosphere. It sounded like this. [In from "Fuego" ->, the Lockn' "Ghost" starts out with some staccato MuTron work from Trey and some wah-infused Clav' from Page, before Mike and Fish shove the jam into a bright, upbeat space that Trey fills and trills with sustained joy. After a bit of "WOO!" and a McGrupp fake-out, they slide right into -> "Gin."] |
2016-08-26 | Gin | Arrington, VA | 14:26 | Mike and Fish quickly inject some spunk into this version, leading the band into a frisky groove which is contorted with loads of tension until finally pushing through to a glorious peaking section just before 11 minutes. At 12:45, a classic rock-derived outro kicks in, ultimately resulting in a > to "BDTNL". |
2016-10-28 | LxL | Las Vegas, NV | 7:48 | Strong interplay between Trey and Page, good syncopation, and solid Fish working like glue to hold it all together results in a quality performance. |
2016-10-28 | Steam | Las Vegas, NV | 10:31 | Really nice band interplay between verses, then a heavy fog rolls over the post-verses jam, almost "Echoes"-like in nature. Very cool effects from Trey and Page here. Strong version, especially for a first set. |
2016-10-28 | Golden Age | Las Vegas, NV | 25:39 | A multi-section, "Type II" behemoth which covers a lot of ground and peaks twice in the process. > to "Simple". Longest version to date. |
2016-10-28 | Light | Las Vegas, NV | 13:41 | Moving beyond some rocking and melodic action in the instrumental section, the jam breaks into some swirling and rhythmic play, before settling into some excellent brooding, probing and charged intergalactic space. |
2016-10-29 | Gumbo | Las Vegas, NV | 9:07 | Trey goes to the MuTron out of the final verse, and Fish hits on a "Manteca"-type beat that helps lead into a funky and psychedelic jam. Mike, in particular, is superb. |
2016-10-29 | Mercury | Las Vegas, NV | 16:06 | Second set opener is anything but elemental, illuminating the song's jam potential. Mike is super, and Trey modulates his tone, a liquid sound darkening to offer a bit by way of transition metal. A pointed, effects-enhanced -> gives rise to a centerpiece "Piper." |
2016-10-29 | Piper | Las Vegas, NV | 14:31 | The customary "Piper" jam is melodic, rocking, and somewhat different from the typical, trilling shred-fest of years past. Around 7:00, the jam takes on a percussive aspect that grows increasingly powerful. Following great Fender-Rhodes action from Page, things settle, then blast into a spirited, celebratory conclusion. |
2016-10-30 | Stash | Las Vegas, NV | 11:24 | Beginning with some great quieter playing, including some "Manteca"-like action, the jam warms for bit, then heads into the familiar tension and release head waters, with excellent Fish and solid Page/Trey interplay. |
2016-10-30 | DwD | Las Vegas, NV | 21:15 | An intense, driving and multi-faceted juggernaut. Initially breaking into quieter, probing play, the mood brightens into a rocking, upbeat section. Then Mike destroys the world as the sentiment turns darker, intense and ominous. Page and Fish are pivotal, but Mike rules as the energy rises to a second, ferocious peak, before settling a bit. Talk about Ass Handed! |
2016-10-30 | BOAF | Las Vegas, NV | 15:05 | Supercharged -> from "DwD" sparks breezy, airy playing, which breaks down around the 5:00 mark. Page is great, and the jam never loses momentum as Trey modifies his tone and the band fluidly floats through a few different tempos before, ultimately, alighting upon a suspended plane of marked beauty and sustained grace. |
2016-10-31 | Sand | Las Vegas, NV | 12:57 | Around the 8 minute mark, Page leads the band into a "Type II" segment of glorious, major-key play. |
2016-10-31 | 2001 | Las Vegas, NV | 11:30 | At the time, the longest 2001 since the MJ version, and best since Darien 2011. Trey leads out in the second jam and the MGM turns into a DMT paradise. Things get evil, spacey, and the band quotes "Fame" while Mike liquefies the crowd. Monster version fitting of the monster 2016 Vegas run. |
2016-12-31 | Twist | New York, NY | 11:37 | -> from Carini and with crunching power chords, this "Twist" initially wades in familiar waters with its emphasis on the upbeat bluesy song structure. Midway through, the band enters a slightly different movement that is more apt to trills and melody, not too dissimilar from a good "Gin." From here, the band strolls down a multifarious valley constructed on the infinite possibilities of Phish. A 3.0 "hose" climax awaits before > to "Piper." |
2017-08-01 | Golden Age | New York, NY | 20:02 | A bit slow to get going, but really takes off when an uptempo groove kicks in around 11:30 with Trey and Page providing leads over the swiftly moving rhythm section. Continues to pick up steam as Trey takes charge with some exciting playing and peaks the jam before it ends with some brief space. |
2017-08-01 | Steep | New York, NY | 12:37 | Surprising jam vehicle from the Baker's Dozen. Grows dissonant out of the verses, then darker and more powerful as Mike fires off his meatball and Page leads the jam into cerebrally modulated pastures. Fishman's ride picks up and leads to some fine finger work from bluesy Trey. |
2017-08-01 | 46 Days | New York, NY | 12:01 | Seriously rocking version becomes seriously percussive. Strong, funky, full-band play finds Trey, Page, and Mike breaking from their rigs to join Fish upon his kit. Trey picks a nifty little line upon the Marimba Lumina - lifted from his play preceding "Drums" - and a cool, upbeat jam ensues. Seriously percussive version then becomes seriously spacey. Back with their instruments, the four gel to create a sonic outro which smartly >'s into "Piper". |
2017-08-01 | Piper | New York, NY | 13:05 | A typically upbeat, rocking "Piper" jam more or less through 7 minutes then shifts into a raw and funky groove recalling a style of jamming commonly found in its "2.0" brethren. Gets more out there after 10 minutes and takes on a darker tone with "46 Days" quotes and lots of bass effects. |
2017-08-02 | Meat | New York, NY | 9:21 | Baker's Dozen Hole-themed "Meat" - dropped as means to further develop the first set's "morbid" milieu - takes a humorous turn when, from deep within the silent section, Fish jumps the band and butchers the beat. This miscue unearths a slow sort of zombie stomp, which, rising from a bit of primordial ooze, assumes a life of its own. Inventive soloing from Trey, and super contributions from Page, slowly bleeds into "Maze." |
2017-08-02 | Mike's | New York, NY | 22:07 | After a conventional first jam, this longest version since '96 (until being surpassed by 8/4/23) transitions in the back-in-the-day typical way (i.e., after the "tramps segment closing chords" are played) to a Second Jam that is anything but typical. The lengthy exploration peaks triumphantly at minute 20 and segues into "O Holy Night" of all things after a brief foggy outro. |
2017-08-02 | Taste | New York, NY | 18:30 | "Taste" gets its first true jam, and it's a doozy, too. Darker-than-usual jamming leads to a lovely shift to major-key blissfulness, Trey's chord playing giving the jam some real warmth. The music shifts to more powerful, if still low-key rocking out, Page's piano at the forefront, then builds to a superb finish. Dies out and > into a superb "Wingsuit". |
2017-08-02 | Wingsuit | New York, NY | 11:02 | > from a huge "Taste" to cool a historic "Mike's Groove". While the version slowly builds with customary intensity, Trey (6:00) enters a passage of excellent inward play before joined by Page. This develops into pointed, inventive, and, for "Wingsuit", unusual full-band improvisation, before yielding to a strange, restrained, conclusion. > "Sally". |
2017-08-04 | Scents and Subtle Sounds | New York, NY | 16:34 | Moves quickly into a sprightly upbeat zone with sharp playing from Trey and Page giving the ivories a good workout. The band shifts to a new gear and builds to a squealing fireball peak, replete with a "NMINML" tease. Downshifts into a casual, almost tropical groove (helped by Mike's relaxed basslines and Fish's metronomic work), a groove reminiscent of some 2.0 jams. > into a superb "Caspian". |
2017-08-04 | Caspian | New York, NY | 10:06 | Blistering version > from an experimental "SaSS." Trey wastes no time finding his line - a huge blast of sustain ripped from the vocal refrain - and, accompanied by pounding Page, simply lays waste to any idea of melodic variation. Incendiary soloing seems to arrive from some other place before Page moves to his keys, Trey fades, and "Caspian" sinks into an eerie sort of abyss. Dark effects and "EIIRP" quotes float to color the surface space before the band breaks for "Fluffhead." |
2017-08-05 | Jibboo | New York, NY | 12:23 | Some mildly meandering jamming at the beginning occurs as the band seeks a direction, but patience pays off as they eventually all lock into the groove and build energy together. This delivers a decent piano and whale call-dominated peak as the band continues to feed off the audience's energy. |
2017-08-05 | Plasma | New York, NY | 10:50 | > from "Alaska," serious, introspective play stands out amidst a series of standout moments. "Plasma," at its finest, often evokes early "Timber" jams, with impassioned improvisation by Fish and Trey. There's much of that on display, here, before Trey, deep in a liquid pocket, rides a watery blast of sustain, the band in tow, working the jam to crest and deliver a sunshine of feeling. |
2017-08-05 | Ghost | New York, NY | 20:40 | After YEARS of sustained lobbying by site users for its chart induction, it's time to have your doughnut, and eat it, too. Twelve shows in, it was just a matter of time before the band delivered a centerpiece "Ghost," and, following a smoking set-closing "Plasma," the band wastes no time, taking the stage and bathing the arena with a smooth sort of "pastiche," a accumulation of BD sounds that manifests around sixteen minutes in when Trey fires a series of notes (which Page traces in a sort of descending pattern) before Phish enters one of its most august moments. |
2017-08-06 | Most Events Aren't Planned | New York, NY | 10:49 | Impressive debut. While colored with shades of Straus, the version remains true to Vida Blue through Page's vocal delivery. Trey then leads the band on a wonderful odyssey, swapping ideas with Page, who alternates between slinky synth and pointed acoustic, the duo driving the version to a rousing conclusion. |
2017-08-06 | Simple | New York, NY | 25:28 | A multifaceted capstone, assuredly anchoring the final show of the historic Baker's Dozen run. Luxuriating in each movement, the playing morphs from dark, electro-funk, to brighter, swinging, groovy fun, and then to appropriately celebratory hose. The final winding down is a fitting glaze for this big doughnut. |
2017-08-06 | YEM | New York, NY | 24:01 | Fiery jam segment with Trey really tearing it up. Mike teases "Izabella" during B&D, leading to a very cool full-band tease. The vocal jam includes quotes of songs previously played during the Baker's Dozen. |
2017-12-30 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 19:30 | Key modulates a few mins into the jam, and a bright, effortlessly soaring groove transpires. Excellent interplay by the band as well, including as the jam mightily peaks before they return to the theme and conclude it old school. |
2017-12-30 | DwD | New York, NY | 28:21 | Big-time version from the NYE run that moves smoothly through powerful grooves that touch upon several shades of darkness, thanks to some really heavy work from both Trey and Mike, before turning upbeat and anthemic and dazzling the crowd with a wonderful feel-good journey to The Land of Bliss. The band gooses some "woo"s, then wind down and segue neatly into "Steam". |
2017-12-30 | Steam | New York, NY | 14:09 | -> from "DwD", a typically strong "Steam" dissipates well before the 8:00 mark. The band concentrates their effects to create an extended passage of pure space, its chilling, thrilling sounds informing an eerie and impressive din. |
2017-12-31 | Jibboo | New York, NY | 14:58 | The most exploratory "Gotta Jibboo" since 7/4/00. After standard quiet interplay at the beginning, Page gets funky on the clavinet and Trey heads for funkier and bluesier pastures, until on a dime, the band modulates the key, and a light-hearted and bubbly jam warps time and space to ring in the new year. |
2017-12-31 | ASIHTOS | New York, NY | 18:54 | Serving as the anchor of NYE's nautically themed set, this jam rides a current of warm major-key play into a funky groove and then sails to a swell peak before receding into the depths. |
2018-08-07 | DwD | Camden, NJ | 24:08 | "Orchestral" in nature, the band smoothly transitions through several distinct "movements", each refined and offering something different by way of nuance or texture. Be the passage airy or muscular, driven or restrained, the jam remains engaging and highly musical, ultimately yielding to patterned, tripped-out effects, culminating with an august, psychedelic conclusion. |
2018-08-07 | Light | Camden, NJ | 16:30 | Strong vocals yield to pure, fun-in-the-sun jamming. Trey shapes his tone around 4:30, and alights upon a melody, matched, in equal measure, by Page. Trey lays back and Mike steps up - his play characteristically super - and in-step with Page, who soon bathes the stage with synthetic waves. Trey again enters the fray, finds a warm, melodic line, and the four musicians gel as one, summoning an easy-going, yet spirited vibe. Fish offers terrific fills; sound swells; and energy builds to a plucky rise, culminating with Trey creating a shimmering, feel-good, paint-by-number peak. |
2018-08-08 | Theme | Camden, NJ | 8:23 | Trey's solo is short and to the point but played with inspiring confidence and results in a strong collective peak. |
2018-08-08 | Everything's Right | Camden, NJ | 16:13 | A multi-passage monstrosity grows its sea legs out of the Delaware River as the band walks this "Everything's Right" around the corner and back. Up top, dark minor-mode jamming is propelled thanks to Page' synth and stellar bass work from Mike; this eventually paves the path to a happy and fluid bliss jam. A second key change first heads for grimy Leslie-driven plinko, until Trey steps up with whale call and a second prominent bliss peak unfolds thanks to Fish's dynamic improvisation. An abrupt return to the final chorus winds down to close out the tune and, in turn, the set. |
2018-08-08 | Scents and Subtle Sounds | Camden, NJ | 12:07 | Played with the intro for only the 3rd time in 3.0 (SBIX, 8/12/15). A warm and delicate jam builds out of the verses proper, which morphs into a darker zone with Page and Mike taking point as Trey goes to his effects. Builds to a pretty sweet peak as Trey takes the reins, then comes to a gentle close. |
2018-08-08 | Character Zero | Camden, NJ | 7:37 | > from a memorable "Melt", "Stop-Start" / "Woo-Driven" action yields to smooth, fluid soloing (featuring Trey's incredibly warm tone), atop bedrock bass, drums, and Page's groovy play. Short but sweet, a fun way to send 'em home. |
2018-10-31 | Halley's | Las Vegas, NV | 9:57 | A solid, medium intensity exploratory groove emerges from the typical "Hallley's" outro, with nice interplay between Trey, Page and Mike. |
2018-10-31 | Cool Amber and Mercury | Las Vegas, NV | 6:23 | Debut. |
2018-10-31 | ASIHTOS | Las Vegas, NV | 9:24 | Compact bliss jam full of sustained whammy guitar leads over a bed of wavy electric piano. |
2018-11-01 | CDT | Las Vegas, NV | 15:14 | A second jam emerges post refrain with some brief funk and then works its way into a bouncy upbeat groove with a tasty "Third Stone From the Sun" tease in Trey's soloing. This vibe continues towards the end of the jam until the band makes a nifty move back to "CDT" for a second pass at the traditional song ending. |
2018-11-01 | Blaze On | Las Vegas, NV | 19:46 | The jam breaks out into some raunchy, textured rock but does not last long before a shift to major around 10 minutes. From there, a mellow groove of bass, keyboards, and organ effects from Trey unfolds and gradually gains intensity as guitar becomes more prominent. After the peak, there is an outro of synchronized stop-start "woo" riffs and > to "NMINML". |
2018-11-01 | Twist | Las Vegas, NV | 12:38 | The typical "Twist" jam features good variation and dynamics modulation. Things begin to peel away around 5:20, with a mode change. Following some brief, upbeat playing, the jam begins to rock, as well as further explore. Unexpectedly at around 9:35, Trey and others add moaning, vocal chanting to mix, which combines well with Page's circus-like organ playing. The vocals here are a big plus, providing an element of surprise to a quality, improvisational jam. |
2018-11-02 | Mercury | Las Vegas, NV | 24:29 | The first segment consists of strong and varied "Mercury" style jamming, highlighted by a hypnotic groove in the 13th minute. After regrouping at 15:30 the song's theme returns but in a major key and propels the jam to a peak and a bit of echoey play at the tail end before > "Suzy". |
2018-11-02 | Soul Planet | Las Vegas, NV | 16:04 | Soaring, anthemic play from Trey combined with gooey bass from Mike highlight this second set opening version. After a mini-peak, the jam eventually fizzles to > "Down With Disease". |
2018-11-03 | Tube | Las Vegas, NV | 10:50 | Funk smoothly transitions to a warm major-key groove at 4:30 which comes together nicely from 7:45 - 8:15 with Trey employing delayed auto-wah tones at the peak, and then drops just as easily back into "Tube" at 9:00 to conclude. |
2018-11-03 | SOAMelt | Las Vegas, NV | 20:04 | Quickly shrugs off the usual jam structure and embarks on a thrilling exploration of multiple disparate themes, the last of which is some spooky space that leads back to "SOAM" at 18:30. |
2018-12-29 | 46 Days | New York, NY | 12:22 | Around 5:30, the playing shifts from the usual fire and brimstone stuff to a quieter, percussive groove. As Page and Trey link up, the jam develops energy and a brighter tone. The band neatly modifies the energy up and down several times, before cleverly -> to "Cities." |
2018-12-29 | Wolfman's | New York, NY | 16:01 | Begins with a bit of vocal jamming and then gets into an upbeat clav-groove and continues building in a section bookended by "Party Time" quotes before some more "Wolfman's" scatting and a final ascent for a guitar-driven, high-energy conclusion. |
2018-12-29 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 19:54 | First section features an extended, fiery jam that is akin to "I Know You Rider" (Grateful Dead) before funkily dissolving into "Death Don't Hurt Very Long." |
2018-12-29 | DDHVL | New York, NY | 6:50 | Version is sandwiched between heaping slices of "Tweezer." |
2018-12-29 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 7:51 | Second section is melodic, patient, and mystical, and includes a smooth transition to "No Quarter." |
2018-12-29 | No Quarter | New York, NY | 7:45 | > out of a fan-favorite "Tweezer" > "Death Don't Hurt Very Long" -> "Tweezer" sequence. A particularly passionate version befitting the set it's in, with sharp playing from everyone and a truly fiery Trey solo on top. Reminiscent of the cooking-with-gas 2011 "No Quarter"s. > into an equally killer "Also Sprach Zarathustra". |
2018-12-29 | 2001 | New York, NY | 9:49 | A dynamite version that demonstrates Phish's mastery of the "Also Sprach Zarathustra" groove, as the band neatly weaves around Fish's four-on-the-floor beat and both Trey and Page wonderfully mesh together. |
2018-12-30 | Mike's | New York, NY | 9:14 | Although no "second jam," the post-tramps-segment jam is extended, with Trey passionately soloing (and even trilling) quite fiercely, and there's an excellent peak to the jam taboot. |
2018-12-30 | Weekapaug | New York, NY | 12:38 | Perhaps the real giveaway that this is a stellar, ferocious, extended 3.0 version is the segue into Crosseyed (which could certainly be smoother, but is still welcome). |
2018-12-30 | Tube | New York, NY | 6:04 | Abandons funk for a spacey groove with plenty of synthesizer and twinkling staccato notes and then makes a surprise -> "Weekapaug." |
2018-12-30 | Weekapaug | New York, NY | 2:19 | -> in from "Tube." Hot little "Weekapaug" reprise jam before -> back to "Tube." |
2018-12-30 | Tube | New York, NY | 1:36 | -> from "Weekapaug" into the breakdown to wrap up another strong 2018 "Tube." |
2018-12-30 | Everything's Right | New York, NY | 15:30 | Subtle, magisterial, and grand, the jam, bright as DMT (if, in actuality, colored with "WTU?" DNA), slowly builds, gently rising more than gaining intensity, the band riding Trey's wave of sound which crests to swell to become play notably restrained and pretty. This, then, into a perfect > for "Plasma." |
2018-12-30 | Plasma | New York, NY | 9:09 | As a platform for improvisation, "Plasma" continues to impress. Here, > from a huge "Everything's Right," the band does not cool so much as they are cool. Trey lays way back, yet still manages to inform much of the version's signature sound. Fish's play is polyphonic. Page answers. And Mike offers some of the run's most interesting, and varied, runs. An awesome, cerebral, jam. |
2018-12-30 | Light | New York, NY | 20:01 | Slides into a warm and relaxed Page-driven jam with Fish's woodblock adding color, then dives into a space not too far away from the preceding "Plasma" at Mike's urging, before building to a huge trill-laden finale and dying away into spaciness. Tremendous version. |
2018-12-30 | SOAMelt | New York, NY | 16:47 | Almost one year later, the band closes another holiday set with a crazed "Melt." Like 12/29/17, the version sheds form after assuming nothing more than a perfunctory structure. Unlike the 17, however, the musicians - and Page in particular - expand upon 2018's "SOAM" sound, creating that haunting, Phishy sort of shoegaze; another mind-bender; in nature more spectral than musical. |
2018-12-31 | DwD | New York, NY | 17:57 | A punchy groove emerges from the song proper. Trey envelops the music with an effects-based sonic haze, with Page's rich organ bed carefully cradling Fish and Mike's locked-in play. At around 13:00 the music grows in intensity, building a psychedelic groove replete with muscular synth bass and broken polyrhythms via Fishman. This steadily builds to a raging minor key rock peak, followed by a denouement of brief ambience. |
2018-12-31 | Seven Below | New York, NY | 17:41 | Quickly takes on a more assertive and slightly darker tone with Trey and Page employing a variety of sounds to color the jam before reverting to major at 7:00 with some light and airy play. This section gradually intensifies and gets more rocking as it progresses, ending with a thick, locked-in groove and some "woos" before > "Twist". |
2019-06-30 | Twenty Years Later | Camden, NJ | 21:14 | The band shows a willingness to let things develop slowly and organically at a level normally reserved for soundchecks in this relaxed, free-form exploration. Numerous styles and moods are employed with each movement given time to breathe before subtly transitioning to the next. From the initial grungy outro to floating bliss to the final funky riffing and everything in between, this jam covers a surprising amount of ground and does so without building to any singular peak. |
2019-07-02 | DwD | Saratoga Springs, NY | 20:30 | > from "Cool Amber and Mercury." One week later, and another monster "Disease" is played. This is a multi-layered jam with multiple themes; if you don't like where the jam goes at one point, just wait three minutes and it will go off in another direction. Trey navigates and leads the band with the ease and confidence we've come to expect. > into a cool "Scents and Subtle Sounds." |
2019-07-02 | Scents and Subtle Sounds | Saratoga Springs, NY | 15:14 | > from "Down With Disease" and featuring the proper song intro. The jam is patient as the band lets things happen organically. Nimble play from Trey leads the way as the tempo and intensity gradually pick up, before eventually > "Twist". |
2019-07-05 | Mercury | Boston, MA | 19:58 | Extended take gradually leaves "Mercury" proper behind with some amorphous riffing and then enters an ethereal passage with meditative bass and searching guitar leads over a bountiful bed of church-like organ tones. |
2019-12-01 | Tube | Uniondale, NY | 10:49 | Totally tubular, Trey, around 4:40, hits upon groove, absolutely chill and pitch-perfect smooth (check out the audience's reaction) before leaning into his effects, matched by Page, who, on point, creates sounds which slowly ebb and flow, arriving in huge, bend-but-never-breaking waves. Page jumps to his concert piano, Trey (in sound) follows suit, and the jam lifts off with the band slowly building to a sustained and euphoric peak. |
2019-12-01 | Everything's Right | Uniondale, NY | 14:30 | A "Call to the Post" tease from Trey before the song begins indicates he's ready and raring to go. Swirling synth play from Page and heavy effects from Trey highlight this cool jam; Mike and Fish lay down a slick groove to let their bandmates shine. There's a menacing end to the jam before it > into "Down With Disease." |
2019-12-01 | Twenty Years Later | Uniondale, NY | 11:47 | > from "Ruby Waves." This is a dark, swirling, Mike-led jam that wastes no time getting started once the song proper ends. Page and Fish create an ambient background while Trey and Mike interplay. The end of the jam gets quite heavy before dissolving into > "Backwards Down the Number Line." |
2019-12-30 | Blaze On | New York, NY | 17:17 | A bouncy shuffle is led by Page's clavinet and Mike into a "Mind Left Body"-like chord progression. This returns to a mild shuffle, eventually turning into a bliss passage in Eb. A very pleasant melody erupts from Trey and Page, and a pleasant peak evolves. While not a prominent jam peak, it has some longevity and gets to a nice place before winding back down. A pleasant though not intense journey. |
2019-12-30 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 34:58 | Symphonic in scope, this version features a host of strikingly disparate sections with tempo and key and harmonic and melodic changes galore. Inarguably among the most sublime masterpieces of improvisation in Phish's illustrious history. |
2019-12-30 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 2:26 | Punches out of "Steam" and soars triumphantly, hearkening back to the peak of the set's opening version, before seguing into "Ruby Waves." |
2019-12-31 | Halley's | New York, NY | 12:27 | Featuring wonderful interplay between Trey and Mike in particular, eventually the jam's key modulates and Trey solos melodically, and then the jam grooves and concludes in an "On Broadway" -esque fashion before "Caspian" abruptly begins. |
2019-12-31 | Wolfman's | New York, NY | 10:44 | Funk-driven groove emerges on the back of Mike's slap bass. Page switches from plinko Clavinet to Hammond to drive the groove home. |
2019-12-31 | Light | New York, NY | 12:31 | Quickly drops into a low-boil minor-key zone, then heads into more upbeat waters. Swerves into a swaggering and funkier zone with Page doing work on the keys, then delves into a sprightly calypso-adjacent jam thanks to Mike's strong work. Trey takes the jam into more anthemic territory, and this blistering rockout ends with a nice peak. A compact version that still finds multiple moods. > into a ferocious "Twist". |
2019-12-31 | Twist | New York, NY | 11:32 | A massive runaway freight train that builds up power from out of the verses (thanks to Mike's muscular basslines) and then picks up the pace at Fish's urging, with Trey hitting on a cool repeating chord pattern, before exploding into a flash of improvisational pyrotechnics. Some real heavy duty jamming in this NYE "Twist". |
2021-08-14 | Drowned | Atlantic City, NJ | 15:54 | While staying somewhat close to typical "Drowned" jamming, the music explores those bounds widely until 10:30, when there is a distinctive shift to new terrain. The jam becomes pulsing and percussive before finally settling to quiet transition space. |
2021-09-03 | Carini | Commerce City, CO | 21:47 | A real superb tour for "Carini" arguably peaks at Dick's with this Set 1 closer, which moves from major-key fare to a powerful and ferocious rockout egged on by the rhythm section to a twinkling Moment of Bliss to aliens-descending strangeness to a triumphant finale to (once again) "Carini" proper to finish up. A magnificent jam from the fantastic Dick's 2021 run. |
2021-09-03 | CDT | Commerce City, CO | 20:15 | Moves into a sparse and low-key jam space with Trey going to his bag of tricks and Page neatly accompanying him on electric piano, while Fish absolutely hammers the skins in a way you don't hear in other jams this tour. The band luxuriates in this delightful jam before Trey hits on some chords akin to "Blaze On", Page goes to the synths, and the jam picks up the pace before galloping to the finish line. Twenty minutes long and feels like twelve, a hallmark of Summer 2021. |
2021-09-04 | Tube | Commerce City, CO | 9:47 | At first minimalist and downbeat until Trey starts his solo backed by synth waves from Page, after which the jam really opens up for a majorly exuberant finale. |
2021-09-04 | Everything's Right | Commerce City, CO | 24:40 | A tale of two jams - the surprisingly downbeat late-night groove in the first half distinguished by Trey's effects and Page's captivating piano and synths playing, and a more typically Phish-y uplifting heavy-duty rockout in the second half. Really great jamlet at the end, too, with Trey playing some galloping chords and Mike doing some fine work. A really wonderful jam. |
2021-09-05 | Sand | Commerce City, CO | 13:57 | This isn't your typical "Sand" jam, as the start of it wouldn't be out of place at the beginning of a "Tube" jam. Things mellow out later, then get to a murky outer-space place. The most impressive thing about this jam is Jon Fishman's refusal to quit; he is fantastic throughout. > a must-hear "Sigma Oasis." |
2021-09-05 | Sigma Oasis | Commerce City, CO | 15:05 | "Sigma Oasis" makes its jam vehicle debut as the second half of a surprise first set 1-2 punch with "Sand", settling into a lower-key late-night groove reminiscent of the prior show's "Everything's Right" before morphing into something even more wicked thanks to Trey and Mike's effects and then slowly morphing into "All of These Dreams". |
2021-09-05 | Set Your Soul Free | Commerce City, CO | 18:58 | Pivots to low-boil major key effects-laden jamming out of the usual "SYSF" jam, moves to a more robust zone with Trey taking over with some nice soloing, then finishes with an insistent driving groove, with Fishman outstanding all throughout. |
2021-09-05 | Simple | Commerce City, CO | 8:38 | Launches a tremendously fun segment and lays down the musical bones that carry through to -> "Catapult", back to "Simple", and later "Meatstick". |
2021-09-05 | Catapult | Commerce City, CO | 2:29 | Emerges -> from a "Simple" jam and digs into a deep, industrial groove, making this one of the more musically robust appearances to date. Then -> back to "Simple" for more of the same. |
2021-09-05 | Simple | Commerce City, CO | 3:42 | -> from "Catapult" as the off-kilter robo-funk continues until > "Meatstick". |
2021-09-05 | Meatstick | Commerce City, CO | 8:44 | > from a "Simple/Catapult/Simple" sandwich and recalls the machinelike groove heard in that jam with stops and starts, dial-tone Trey, and quotes of "Lonely Trip" and "Catapult". |
2021-10-28 | 2001 | Las Vegas, NV | 16:19 | Kicking off what would become the instant classic "numbers" show, Phish unleashes the version of "2001" we've been waiting for. A 17 minute true representation of the power of "2001". The intro alone is 7 minutes (longer than some 3.0 versions). This take is Phish as tight as the entrance to the MGM. It's a full sledgehammer of groove that is impossible not to dance to. Moves into "1999" to form 30 of the best opening minutes to Phish you will find. |
2021-10-28 | 1999 | Las Vegas, NV | 14:48 | Coming after a massive, show-opening "2001", "1999" makes its third appearance in a Phish setlist. The band wastes no time getting down and they find a groove together almost immediately. By 13:00, the party jam has turned into frenetic energy. Soaring play from Trey towards the end of the jam as they clunkily > into "555". |
2021-10-28 | 555 | Las Vegas, NV | 9:35 | After years of waiting and speculation, "555" finally gets jammed. The big shift comes at 6:15 with a quiet and patient turn for bliss mode jamming. As the jam starts ascending to its peak, Trey adds bluesy notes to the fray which prevents further ascent; > "46 Days." |
2021-10-28 | 46 Days | Las Vegas, NV | 14:24 | After some typical rocking the jam falls into a black hole of sinister cosmic energy and claws its way out the other side for an uplifting conclusion. |
2021-10-28 | Twenty Years Later | Las Vegas, NV | 16:19 | > from "Strawberry Letter 23". The first set-closing "20YL" doesn't disappoint. By 6:20, Trey has played the jam away from a typical jam from the song; this is lighter. Behind his deft playing and Fish's fantastic drumming, this jam truly takes off. By 10:30, the band is locked in, the prowess of their great jamming in Fall '21 on full display. Things get a bit swampy before Trey guides the band back into the song proper. |
2021-10-28 | Seven Below | Las Vegas, NV | 16:50 | Skirts around the edges but stays mostly within the framework through 12 minutes, after which the jam briefly settles delicately before a rising wave of hard-rock takes over, a sound further explored in the following > "If 6 Was 9". |
2021-10-28 | If 6 Was 9 | Las Vegas, NV | 15:33 | A great cover choice for the "numbers" show, and a great jam from the "numbers" show, full of Trey guitar pyrotechnics, gnarly and powerful jamming, and an absolutely soaring finale. Hendrix would've been proud. |
2021-10-28 | Two Versions of Me | Las Vegas, NV | 7:57 | Tough to count the number of times this really cool Phish song has been celebrated, but this version counts. For once, '21 vocal delivery evinces bygone eras, and the music assumes that millennial, poorman's, stately melancholy. This might have been enough for us, but Trey strums the band (listen for terrific Page on piano) into a beautiful passage of remarkable - and timeless - improvisation, before the band, shirking too much trussed up beauty, breaks for a more pressurized calm in the form of NO2. |
2021-10-28 | First Tube | Las Vegas, NV | 10:34 | More "Numbers Show" madness, as this is the only version to date which makes a significant departure from the usual celebratory outro, including a generous "Seven Below" tease and an alien synthesizer finale > "Character Zero". |
2021-10-29 | Axilla (Part II) | Las Vegas, NV | 21:23 | Punishing play, typical of the song, cools. Out, then, from the song's familiar closing refrain, Trey shapes his tone, his sound heavy as a stone, and offset by spaceage Page. On-point (somewhat incendiary) Fish, Mike anchors what becomes an oozing, liquid event. Lazer-like, the band enters a jam that evokes Floyd inside the walls of a cave, with terrific lead Fish. Listen again and again - Trey is so inventive - as there is always something different to hear, or say. |
2021-10-29 | Mike's | Las Vegas, NV | 12:56 | On the heels of a towering "Axilla II" jam, this "Mike's" starts with a distinct funky groove which soon evokes "Martian Monster" before returning to more typical play through 6:45. From there, the jam switches to major for a playful and increasingly suspended-in-air feel until the closing chords. |
2021-10-29 | Weekapaug | Las Vegas, NV | 12:09 | A squirrely little Paug, the version closes out a terrific, traditional, "Mike's Groove." Too hot to quite enter stop / start play, the band comes close, before Trey breaks to solo. Nimble and spirited, many notes inform play both cerebral and danceable - the best kind of Phish - improvisation, with Fish consistently as ever attacking his kit. With Mike in check, and Page pivoting from keys to piano, Trey alights upon a melody he deems fit to follow. Play cools to pause before, terifficaly, returning to [plus some goofy banter] refrain. |
2021-10-29 | I Always Wanted It This Way | Las Vegas, NV | 13:23 | High-energy set-closer delivers a rousing jam that gets beyond the usual techno-synth into a pumping euphoric blowout. |
2021-10-29 | Ass Handed | Las Vegas, NV | 5:57 | A fun little amuse-bouche to a superb second set, as the band really leans into the hard-rock outro to "Ass Handed" proper, Fishman snapping into a tasty groove while Mike takes point on the jam. Short but sweet. > into "Tweezer". |
2021-10-29 | Tweezer | Las Vegas, NV | 19:33 | After beginning ordinarily enough, the jam eventually takes-on a Trey-led melodic theme reminiscent of "hose" improvisation, yet the "type I" form is maintained in a compellingly fierce manner. This theme-jam takes over four minutes to begin peaking, soaring, in a dizzyingly beautiful fashion, and then Trey turns on the syrupy envelope-filter effect, and Mike begins playing lead fucking bass, with fantastic accompaniment from Page, who then begins soloing a bit over this incredible groove being laid down by Mike, Trey and Fish around 16 mins in. Spine-tinglingly cool, repetitive, grooving takes over, and Trey begins soloing melodically o'er it before Fish returns to Tweezer's drum line, and the jam dissolves away as Trey nearly teases "Lifeboy" before Bitch begins. It's a safe bet that if this sick improv doesn't move you, then 4.0 Phish is not for you. |
2021-10-29 | Reba | Las Vegas, NV | 14:13 | Like all things '21, "Reba" - here perfectly placed - has been touched by Trey's grace. Solid play breaks for a jam we haven't seen too often of late, a simple bit of riffing, or vamping, with Trey here or there adding notes atop a bedrock beat. Terrific. Perfectly paced, Trey's marvelous tone offset by Page's perfect fills, terrific Mike, and scattershot Phish, the band, even before the banter, drives to a nice peak. |
2021-10-29 | Sand | Las Vegas, NV | 12:00 | Trey wastes no time getting a "Tweezer" tease in, kicking off a "blissy" jam. No longer chained to the song's bass line, Mike has some very inventive play. The "bliss" gives way to Trey going heavy on his effects, and eventually -> "Tweezer." |
2021-10-29 | Tweezer | Las Vegas, NV | 4:59 | After Sand peaks and "goes type II," Trey leads the full-band back into Tweezer at 11:53 of the Sand (LivePhish timing; fwiw the fact that this isn't tracked on LivePhish explains why Phish.net does not rely on LP tracking for setlist purposes---it can be demonstrably, objectively, Wrong). This renewed Tweezer jam cooks for many minutes before the key modulates in "type II" fashion and the groove melodically soars anew, with a wondrously smooth segue into Sigma Oasis. |
2021-10-29 | Walk Away | Las Vegas, NV | 8:10 | Having found a home as the S2 closer in its last three apearances, this "Walk Away" really loads the spring, finally relenting for a well-earned peak and walk off the stage. |
2021-10-30 | The Dogs | Las Vegas, NV | 8:26 | The opening song of the "animals" show, a surprisingly insistent low-key groove reminiscent of "BOAF" emerges out of the song proper, driven by Page's piano work. Trey then briefly moves the band into major key territory, before the jam grows hazier and more effects-laden, and then neatly moves back into "The Dogs". |
2021-10-30 | Antelope | Las Vegas, NV | 11:06 | First: Listen to the aud. Second: Inspired, given the evening's theme, the band is game. More so than most of late, the band dallies a bit, seeing "Lope" as playful as is ought to be, with all sorts of (and you don't even need to watch) smiling band intraplay. Page is of course crashing in on his keys; Mike is hammering from the start; and Fish is Phish (or close); but this version dominates because Trey attacks. No set-closure, we're early on here, and Trey makes that clear. When he works his effects before reaching for that peak, tune in. And keep listening - because it's false. And then we're in ..... |
2021-10-30 | Wombat | Las Vegas, NV | 11:01 | The normally upbeat song/jam goes contemplative. The rest of the band creates a texture for Trey to solo over. All four members coalesce around 10:00 for a neat groove, which eventually fizzles out and > into "Guyute". |
2021-10-30 | Llama | Las Vegas, NV | 5:56 | Strong version that really comes to a head with Trey wringing some gnarly notes from his guitar in the peak. |
2021-10-30 | Your Pet Cat | Las Vegas, NV | 15:16 | "YPC" gets its legs fully stretched out for the first time. As this song can, it sounds not unlike a "Tube" jam. This version is replete with great playing from Page on his synth. Around 9:15, Trey leads the band into new territory. His play is deliberate, Mike and Fish push the jam underneath him. Page wails on his keys alongside. The jam reaches a frenzied peak around 13:45 and then goes back into the song proper and then > "Runaway Jim". |
2021-10-30 | Runaway Jim | Las Vegas, NV | 10:56 | > from "YPC," the play here, while not extraordinarily out of bounds, is expertly placed, showcasing yet another of 2021's strengths - song placement. As if effortless, the band moves through a spirited, languid "Jim," blissfully light of effects and rife with tonal shifts and pure musicianship. Each musician - riding Fish's bend-but-don't-break wave contributes. That said: Trey fans. Tune in. His tone and his play is remarkable, and listen as he brightens (Page following) to > "Piper." Excellence. |
2021-10-31 | Ghost | Las Vegas, NV | 26:30 | "Ghost" gets its almost-always-spot on Halloween night and it does not disappoint. At 10:30, the band locks in after searching around. Fish's play drives the jam and Trey's soloing leads the way. The upbeat jam slows considerably at 14:00, with the ensuing play sounding reminiscent of a "BASOS" jam. From that, emerges a murky, effects-laden jam. Mike's bass playing towards the end is a highlight in the longest version of the song since the IT Festival. |
2021-10-31 | KDF | Las Vegas, NV | 12:30 | Trey's favorite delay signals this version will break the mold, and a fully-formed, feel-good jam quickly emerges. A bit of the 2021 "Sci-Fi Soldier" sound creeps in before the final lyrics and becomes more pronounced in the outro until > "Free". |
2021-10-31 | Bowie | Las Vegas, NV | 12:02 | Quite the version in that it keeps the intricacy and speed of the traditional "Bowie" jam but in a major tonality and then swerves back to wrap in normal fashion. |
2021-10-31 | Carini | Las Vegas, NV | 12:25 | Religions could be founded around the eternal question, "shall thy lumpy head be happy or angry this evening?" This gracious offering promptly responds with fleet-footed and upbeat major key jamming that shows adept and confident peak building. A massive wash of heavenly synth tones blasts from the PA at the 8 minute mark; this pleases his lumpiness, who then gets angry at its departure and turns for darker pastures. After the many moods of the great drum tech is expressed, -> "Lonely Trip." |
2021-10-31 | Soul Planet | Las Vegas, NV | 14:16 | Deep in the third set of the Halloween show, the band still has enough creative juice for one more killer jam, as Fish kicks up the tempo and Page does some fine electric piano work, before a slower and more contemplative jam emerges. Fish picks the pace back up and the band enters anthemic mode, Trey's funky new filter adding extra spice, then things get darker and nastier almost out of nowhere with a stomping and powerful jam. -> into "Death Don't Hurt Very Long" out of the muck. |
2022-04-20 | Carini | New York, NY | 18:41 | Opening a show for the third time in eight months, Trey/the band clearly feel comfortable with this rocking show setting the tone for the first set. There's an interesting contrast from the hard-rocking intensity of the song proper and the bliss that follows. After not playing for two months, the band is ready to jam. Trey leads with nimble playing throughout and the rest of the band follows suit in yet another solid Carini opener. |
2022-04-20 | Moma | New York, NY | 12:13 | A strange design, this unfinished version features smooth, relaxed play from Trey (pre-vocals) and typically great Fish. While never quite abandoning the song, proper, Trey's impassioned play, notable for a wonderful array of effects, runs for some time before > for "Leaves." |
2022-04-20 | Stash | New York, NY | 12:15 | Trey enters the fray with tight staccato picking which Mike counterpoints with a fat and funky tone. From there, the jam skirts around the edges of "Stash" proper with a playful swagger, all the while the music focused and suspenseful, until boiling over around 11:00 with Trey tearing it up and Fish really digging into his kit. A dank "Stash" indeed. |
2022-04-20 | DwD | New York, NY | 22:48 | A botched composed section leads to what the band does best these days: extended improvisation and longform jamming. Departing the song proper, Trey, atop Fish's incendiary offbeat playing, eases into a melodic line (offset by fiery riffing) and accented by awesome Page on his concert G. A cool, almost stately jam emerges, with Trey shaping his tone to make of familiar territory something new. Mike and Fish add a lot of color before the jam regains intensity and finds its rugged way to the song's anthemic closing refrain. |
2022-04-21 | Wolfman's | New York, NY | 13:45 | Straightforward in structure, this version builds momentum by way of clever full band interplay. Trey makes his intentions known right away by shifting through multiple effects, toggling between lead playing and funk-oriented rhythm comping. The rest of the band follows suit, as the jam develops into a laid back, conversational groove session. This then patiently builds to the classic, spirited "Wolfman's" ending. |
2022-04-21 | Ghost | New York, NY | 16:29 | The jam begins with an upbeat tempo anchored by cool playing from Trey. Later, the tempo slows as Mike takes the lead with deft work on the bass. Just when you think the chunky notes of the song from Trey are leading to the end of the jam, the rest of the band isn't quite ready to let things go, which leads to a maelstrom of a peak, before finally returning to end the song. |
2022-04-21 | CDT | New York, NY | 17:38 | Heads into low-key psychedelia-tinged jamming out of the song proper thanks to Trey's thick and goopy effects, then Page suggests major key and a pleasant groove emerges with Mike steadily holding down the fort. The jam gets more delicate and dreamy, even as Fish keeps his usual rock-solid tempo, then builds to a marvelous rock-out climax and a big-time peak thanks once again to Mike's efforts. -> into a great "Tweezer". |
2022-04-21 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 14:03 | Although "average-lengthed" among all versions e'er performed, this gem-of-a-version shines, with the first few minutes of the jam featuring steady, intermittent, "Your Pet Cat"-esque chording and comping by Trey, and a melodically charming/glittering section during which Trey sustains a note for many measures (a modest peak) over excellent accompaniment (that's never dark), before the version concludes atypically with a single chord from Trey that is sustained into the first note > of "2001." |
2022-04-21 | Character Zero | New York, NY | 4:42 | Trey loves MSG, a fact made clear here, when, in lieu of capping the set with a typical "Hood," he elects to floor the Garden, moving from zero to sixty in split seconds, bouncing around the room with typically rocking play (featuring a "Heartbreaker" tease) which, surprisingly, breaks for "Tweezer." |
2022-04-21 | Tweezer | New York, NY | 1:56 | Your Pet "Tweezer" returns, buzzing, if not quite purring, for a few more minutes. |
2022-04-21 | Character Zero | New York, NY | 2:42 | -> from "Tweezer" to cap a fun, inspired close to a set rearranged and redefined. |
2022-04-22 | Axilla (Part II) | New York, NY | 10:15 | An extended take on the usual outro drifts into a hypnotic haze which Trey cuts through with melodic leads, buoyed by ample synthesizer and "Quadrophonic Toppling" quotes. |
2022-04-22 | Set Your Soul Free | New York, NY | 21:28 | Effortless. Path of least resistance. Call it what you will, but few songs of late (and "SYSF" is a cool song, as is) offer more by way of "invitation" to pure, effortless jamming. Tune in around 9:15 for some sonic shimmer so lovely that "Happy Birthday" feels like a natural extension, a before and an after. From here Trey and Fish sync up, the improvisation seemingly calculated, or locked in - a sound, in times, reminiscent of the last big "Taste" explored in the Garden. An organism. Content to let it grow, Trey and Fish (listen to him splash away) team to work through incredibly introspective scattershot play that builds and builds, Page hammering on his piano, Mike in tow, before releasing sound arriving in a cool, whitewashed glow - an outro which, artfully tended, becomes the wonderful groundwork for a > into a magic "Light." |
2022-04-22 | Light | New York, NY | 16:11 | Drifts into some sweet major-key jamming before Fish goes calypso mode and the band hits on a really danceable groove. Trey then switches his playing to "anthemic" mode, and the band hits on a powerful "Roll With The Changes"-esque jam. Very powerful music. > into an equally fantastic "Fuego". |
2022-04-22 | Fuego | New York, NY | 15:49 | Charming in-song moment as Trey snickers over the "world's greatest dad" line (it was his daughter Bella's birthday). The song itself is shaky, but after some regularly strong "Fuego" jamming Trey starts laying on some very thick riffs as Mike maneuvers the jam into choppier waters, then the bottom drops out and an ambient, almost industrial jam emerges, with effects flying everywhere and Fishman thundering away 12/30/12 "Carini" style. > into "WTU?". |
2022-04-22 | Sand | New York, NY | 12:59 | An extremely efficient jam that concisely hits on a lot of sweet mini-movements beginning with a bubbly major groove at 4:20. Later returns to minor tonality with an edge and Trey finds a nice descending theme. |
2022-04-22 | SOAMelt | New York, NY | 12:34 | Writer @waxbanks one said "Tweezer" is Phish's "Dark Star." Agree or disagree, he had a way with words. Agree or disagree, it's tough to argue that "Melt," of late, has assumed a musical form, like Dead jamming, tricky to articulate. Perhaps a moment more significant thematically than musically - kelp descended from above the band during the song, and fell to the stage after the song, and set, was over. Or: Another spacey foray absent tension and release, music interested in sonic exploration and waves of possibility. |
2022-04-23 | Simple | New York, NY | 19:08 | Initially an upbeat jam that pleasantly bobs along until a switch is flipped around 13:30, launching into a segment of terrifying power and space-age effects -> "Egg in a Hole Jam" |
2022-04-23 | Egg in a Hole | New York, NY | 1:37 | "Simple's" incredible exploration gets a slight tweak and lands on the "Egg in a Hole Jam" and then -> back to "Simple". |
2022-04-23 | Simple | New York, NY | 1:20 | -> Trey pulls out of the "Egg in a Hole Jam" with a deft return to the "Simple" riff for a triumphant conclusion to a mind-blowing segment. |
2022-04-23 | NMINML | New York, NY | 26:40 | Arguably "the" jam of this fun and quirky run, the version's quick, plucky tempo features, like an old-school "DWD," fire Trey and a lot of notes - a wonderfully wild array of ideas offset by melodic variation and extended trilling. Straightforward jamming breaks for perhaps the run's most interesting passage, with Trey expertly moving through myriad sounds while swapping deeply textured and patterned play with Mike. The finest in the nation sort of Phish you could listen to all day, improv wherein you can hear the -> into "Caspian" coming from leagues away. |
2022-04-23 | Piper | New York, NY | 11:26 | Winds slowly and gently out of "Caspian" before revving up to its usual modern era tempo. Immediately moves into minor-key late night mode, then swerves into something more upbeat and bouncy, delves into an atypical "Dave's Energy Guide" tease that the band jams on for a little bit, then slows down into molasses-thick funkiness to close. Packs a lot of punch into eleven and a half minutes. |
2022-07-19 | Halley's | Philadelphia, PA | 17:03 | After a mangled composed section, "Halley's Comet" takes off for the stars. The band hangs on Amin and delivers a rocking jam that soon grows introspective. A melodic volley develops between the four band members, which leads the band into a major key pivot. The music grows hazier, delay pedals and synths deploy, and the band finds themselves in a decidedly ambient space. A slightly funkier groove then emerges over the dense textural landscape, and fades out > "Stash." |
2022-07-19 | Piper | Philadelphia, PA | 13:59 | Jam begins in typical "Piper" fashion with strong interplay between the four band members. A subtle modulation occurs a little after the 5 minute mark, and the music grows more psychedelic. Mike and Fish lay down a mighty foundation, as Trey and Page's melodic coloring become more vibrant and textured. The jam then gradually grows in intensity, eventually leading to a powerful Trey-led guitar peak. > "Tweezer" to close out the set's preceding "Tweezerfest" shenanigans. |
2022-08-06 | 555 | Atlantic City, NJ | 6:53 | Inverts the tonality to major just before 5:00 and soars into a "Norwegian Wood" tease before slipping back to nasty old "555" to conclude. |
2022-08-06 | Gin | Atlantic City, NJ | 17:21 | Slow fizz ... For a song in such "Heavy Rotation," the band continues to impress. Atop predictably solid, bedrock Fish, Trey works a number of hard rock riffs to inform major play offset by Page, sprite on his piano, the sound becoming, like waves lapping the shore, a gentle sort of echo, as the musicians, Mike included, work their effects. Play briefly cools before a giant blast of sustain (Trey) vaults play into minor madness and a return to the song's classic coda. |
2022-08-06 | Character Zero | Atlantic City, NJ | 9:10 | The trend of pushing familiar songs out of their musical comfort zone in 2022 continues with another nicely extended version of this traditional set closer that goes beyond the normal rock peak, first by heaping on some extra fire, and then with an experimental outro that slowly peters out. |
2022-08-06 | NMINML | Atlantic City, NJ | 14:48 | After a delightfully melodic first jam, the band turns to explore the darker realms of "No Man's Land" in a jam awash in loops and echoes that taps into a swirling and growling sonic space until finally resolving in a momentary bliss that decays only to give way to the opening notes of "Tweezer". |
2022-08-06 | Simple | Atlantic City, NJ | 12:42 | An "Under Pressure" tease shakes things loose, allowing for a wispy, cyclical jam to take hold, which ratchets up moderately before an eerie alien outro possibly setting up a > "2001" but instead > "BDTNL". Quite a nugget of improvisation. |
2022-09-01 | Ruby Waves | Commerce City, CO | 17:06 | The band is locked in early and gives us a series of scorching, rolling peaks that modulate and are eventually capped off by soaring trilling from Trey. The jam then downshifts into a not quite ambient section that maintains its forward momentum, growing more hypnotic as play gradually accelerates towards another peak and a clean return to end the song. |
2022-09-01 | Don't Doubt Me | Commerce City, CO | 12:42 | In its second outing since the Halloween debut, this "Sci-Fi Soldiers" track shakes off its liquid handcuffs and stretches into a Trey led melodic journey that manages to provide a lot of ear candy in just under 13 minutes. |
2022-09-01 | Piper | Commerce City, CO | 12:33 | "Piper" gets the call as set-closer for the first time and the band let's it rip with a hard-charging jam that barrels ahead ferociously from start to finish. |
2022-09-03 | WotC | Commerce City, CO | 16:21 | Another version that breaks form with grime out of the gate and then develops a "There is a Mountain" theme before dipping back into the muck at 11:30. From there the jam eventually winds its way into uplifting territory once again for an exuberant peak. |
2022-09-03 | KDF | Commerce City, CO | 15:32 | In the longest version since Lakewood 2015 (since surpassed by 7/23/23), the band treats us to a buffet of '22 sounds. Coming out of the gate with a rollicking, fast-paced jam that transitions through discrete sections as Trey toys with his tone, play brightens with outstanding contributions from Mike and Page. Fishman seems to anticipate each melodic turn that Trey takes as the jam builds intensity and takes on a sharper edge. The last couple minutes serve as transitional space highlighted with washes from Page on the Moog before finally giving way to "Sigma Oasis". |
2022-09-03 | Moma | Commerce City, CO | 13:26 | Departing fairly quickly from the song structure, "Moma" here takes at first a slightly contemplative turn with Mike leading and Page on piano. Trey begins to assert himself with some rhythmic effects play that eventually gives way to more aggressive, snarling leads from the frontman culminating in a fist-pumping rock peak that fades to "No Quarter". |
2022-09-03 | 2001 | Commerce City, CO | 8:55 | > from "No Quarter". Extra flourishes from Trey indicate this version may not be a typical "2001". Trey's play ranges from plucky and upbeat to blissful and melodic. This is a neat version that should be heard for its uniqueness. > "Melt". |
2022-09-03 | SOAMelt | Commerce City, CO | 13:01 | Sheets of sound seethe and engulf the listener in a sonic maelstrom that pulses and threatens total dissolution without yet finally releasing its tenuous grasp on the song proper. A chilling, thrilling excursion that must be experienced as much as heard. |
2022-09-04 | Fuego | Commerce City, CO | 14:31 | Solid composed section provides few surprises, but after an especially fiery peak, the jam becomes an extended, laid back and breezy meditation flavored with hints of "Meatstick" (or is it "Fire on the Mountain"?). Never quite achieving full band tease status, the jam nevertheless serves as reminder that this is indeed "Fuego" played at the foot of the Rockies at a place called "Dick's". |
2022-09-04 | C&P | Commerce City, CO | 13:58 | Jam breaks out of standard "Crosseyed" fare around 6:00, entering a brief passage of densely-layered synth funk counterpoint between Trey and Mike. The music ramps up into a more energetic rocking jam, buoyed by Fishman's forceful momentum. A shift to major key occurs, and the music develops into a pleasant, if somewhat restrained coda that -> "David Bowie." |
2022-12-28 | Stash | New York, NY | 13:44 | After a moody start and key change, the jam pivots to major at 9:45 with Trey later emulating a signature move from the BD "CDT" just before 11:00, after which the festivities really kick off as the jam races to a celebratory peak. |
2022-12-28 | A Wave of Hope | New York, NY | 19:36 | Page makes good use of his L-R panning effects early on before Trey treats us to an Allman-esque climb up the mountain on the solid footing laid down by Mike and Fish. This version distinguishes itself especially in the post-peak outro section, taking an unexpected sonic turn as it segues into "It's Ice". |
2022-12-29 | Fluffhead | New York, NY | 21:28 | Clean, sprite, and powerful version, the band "arrives" only to depart, "Fluff" arguably breaking for "Jam" crossed with some feral amalgamation of "YPC." What is clear is that Page is terrific on his concert grand as the band patiently searches for a sort of space to deliver what comes by way of sound, a sort of unhurried, contemplative, improvisational ground. |
2022-12-29 | Your Pet Cat | New York, NY | 6:09 | Melds -> in from an exploratory "Fluffhead" jam, and this "YPC" too gets an unusual treatment, as midway through the funk transitions to a pumped-up, increasingly upbeat blowout. |
2022-12-29 | Gin | New York, NY | 16:52 | Excellent version that traverses through multiple sections. Elevated melodic playing shifts through several key centers before landing in a passage of colorfully dense psychedelia. This then pivots to inspired major key rocking, gradually building to an exuberant, peak-filled finale from Trey. |
2022-12-29 | Ruby Waves | New York, NY | 16:03 | Cool version > from "YEM." Straight from the song, proper, Trey wastes no time, leaning into his solo, a shearing sort of sound carving up space and backed by great Fish. As play seemingly cools, Trey augments his tone, his play offset by Page's inspired, sonic soundwaves. Form and structure dissolve into wild and inventive improv, full-band jamming near raucous at times, celebratory, and ubeat. More patterned play, highlighted by dynamic Fish, breaks for a nasty "Heartbreaker" tease and a return to the song's riff, thus resolving another memorable MSG moment. |
2022-12-30 | Moma | New York, NY | 11:10 | Loose intro with Trey entering on lead vocals sans Fish, while the outro bends the usual structure by downshifting into a more group-oriented jam before gaining intensity and peaking with some snarling guitar leads. |
2022-12-30 | Theme | New York, NY | 14:58 | Despite some tuning issues in the composed section, the band ultimately delivers the second massive "Theme" of '22. The usual soaring play giving way around 6 min as Trey shifts to a more rhythmic approach and Page adds some crunch on the clav. The jam, gaining momentum, grows darker propelled by Mike's aggressive lines and Fishman's deft cymbal work as Trey's tone becomes grittier. Page moves back to piano and around 11 min the band modulates to a brighter space with Trey continuing to adjust his sound. Play then turns atmospheric under the influence of Page's synths and Mike's bass effects before > to "Reba". |
2022-12-30 | NMINML | New York, NY | 20:43 | Big set 2 opener that retains a steady, unhurried pace throughout. The band patiently books along, executing several modulations and subtle changes to the groove with Page and Trey's locked-in textural interplay standing out. The jam gradually builds in intensity, eventually arriving at an emphatic closing section full of energetic and dexterous Trey peaks. |
2022-12-30 | Sand | New York, NY | 17:58 | Flirts with a few blissful passages in the first half, but at 10:45 this version locks into a propulsive, heavy jam with Trey pouring on a bevy of punishing riffs, and then wraps up with a final cimb interspersed in the traditional closing. |
2022-12-30 | I Always Wanted It This Way | New York, NY | 13:30 | Powerful and frenetic version that tears through MSG to end a massive second set. Fishman and Mike develop a forceful, driving rhythm as Page envelops the music with cascading synthesizer and electric piano textures. Atop this, Trey cycles through his rig and spits hellfire from his guitar, peeling the paint off the walls with nuanced sonic intensity. |
2022-12-31 | 2001 | New York, NY | 9:44 | Standard celebratory fare made interesting, as ever, by Trey, who toys with tone, meter, and "2001's" signature theme, amidst the song's backdrop beat. Things get interesting come the six-minute mark, with more by way of full-band improvisation, play offset by groovy Page and marked, come 7:00, by truly unique Trey, his strange (cool) sort of slow-as-melting-snow descending pattern (kind of like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star") inciting more synth-driven jamming. |
2022-12-31 | KDF | New York, NY | 12:13 | > from "2001". The upbeat song turns on a dime and becomes subdued from the jump. The tempo gradually picks back up again and then abates again. In a tight timeframe, this versatile jam goes from introspective to rocking and then back again. Trey eventually winds his way back to the song proper to close things out. |
2023-04-17 | Tweezer | Berkeley, CA | 43:39 | Continuing along its 30 year trajectory of functioning as a great excuse to jam, the Greek Tweezer is another historic version that not only overflows with ideas in showcasing the band's commitment to excellence, but also swells and soars with (at times) wonderfully weird improvisation, brimming with dynamic reverence for proximity to the burning shore. |
2023-04-17 | Simple | Berkeley, CA | 19:09 | -> from another MASSIVE, must-hear Bay Area "Tweezer". The tempo is slow at first, then picks up as effects from multiple band members are toyed with. A change at 11:15 sends the jam to a gloriously rollicking place. The play from Trey is anthemic as the band takes a proverbial victory lap after dropping an hour of seriously impressive improv. The joy from the stage is audible. Things eventually wind down before > "Rock and Roll". |
2023-04-18 | Seven Below | Berkeley, CA | 11:08 | What comes first: The effects or the melody? Tough to say, with Trey, these days. Nevertheless, deft musicianship is on full display - and here, especially, in a song seemingly constructed to showcase the bandâs myriad strengths. Lovely, lilting - and, in many ways, Fish-driven version. Seriously, though: Check the change at 6:21. It's amazing. |
2023-04-18 | Gin | Berkeley, CA | 23:18 | Big, anthemic version finds the band four decades deep, exploring several memorable themes, and moving confidently between sections. Making use of a revitalized palette of instruments and effects, they channel a sound that is both familiar and fresh; exploratory and seemingly effortless, bookended by multiple peaks. Page shines on piano. Super clean return and > to "555". |
2023-04-18 | 555 | Berkeley, CA | 8:27 | > from a huge, must-hear "Bathtub Gin", and the band was clearly not done jamming. This extended version never strays too far from the song, but shouldn't be missed by fans of the song. |
2023-04-18 | Don't Doubt Me | Berkeley, CA | 11:48 | The first set-opening "Don't Doubt Me" kicks off a heavily jammed set. This jam traverses an effects-laden soundscape before giving way to a light, ethereal jam to end things before > "Kill Devil Falls". |
2023-04-18 | KDF | Berkeley, CA | 13:39 | An appearance of the dial tone opens the door to exploration and the jam first makes a quick detour with Trey playing wah rhythm chords while Page comes to the forefront, but before long it morphs into a more conventional upbeat jam. This eventually peters out and something a bit more discordant and unpredictable emerges in the final minutes before > "Fuego". |
2023-04-18 | Fuego | Berkeley, CA | 21:34 | Rough start after a somewhat awkward transition. The band omit a section of the composition early on and forget some lyrics before launching into the jam. As is often the case, they make up for stumbles with transcendent improvisation and here they truly dive deep. After cascading peaks and some vocal levitation, they descend into the ambient abyss. Slowly resurfacing on surging waves of bliss that lift and float towards a tantalizing sonic perfection, it's not long before Mike grabs the helm and submerges the band once again as play takes a darker, more driven turn. The music churns until a theme recalling part of "Mercury" emerges briefly before > "Light". |
2023-04-19 | Bag | Berkeley, CA | 13:37 | Strong version that features great Trey from the jump. Fish dominates, though, his offbeat, cerebral play warranting multiple listens, and informing the version's primary direction. Cool play arrives when, late, Page switches up his sound and runs through his rig. Play cools before the jam truly breaks, but a welcome return to classic form - or, hopefully, a sign of things to come. |
2023-04-19 | Runaway Jim | Berkeley, CA | 13:56 | The jam initially begins in standard "Jim" territory before a Mike-led tonal shift signals new directions. Fishman's inspired melodic drumming retains a familiar vibe, as the rest of the band shifts through several moods in seamless fashion. This gradually escalates towards a lushly-textured minor key romp before wrapping up with the traditional "Jim" ending. |
2023-04-19 | Beneath a Sea of Stars Part 1 | Berkeley, CA | 15:12 | While not "Hydrogen," the version functions similarly; what has now become familiar, airy play, a welcome transition from "Mike's" strong, driven, punch. What follows is a wonderful, psychedelic, excursion. Fish fans would do well to tune in around 6:25. What follows is remarkable as the improvisation itself transitions, Trey picking up Fish's pattern, or call for action, with the version quickly assuming darker over- and undertones. |
2023-04-19 | Set Your Soul Free | Berkeley, CA | 21:08 | After some standard outro riffing, the jam quickly hones in on a more focused vein as it traverses a few intermediate phases before landing on a fiery psychedelic zone with a recurring descending motif. Around 15:00 the groove thickens with churning bass, synths, and twinkling octave-upped guitar over top a splashy beat and ends > "WTU?". |
2023-04-21 | DwD | Hollywood, CA | 21:50 | In lieu of lead-pointed playing, Trey sets the initial tone by tossing out spacious chords and arpeggiations. Page synths and hazy Trey delay paint the scene before a slightly dissonant transition space develops. The band then dials up the grime to deliver a sludge-y, stomping minor key rock-out. Ample time is spent in the murk before fading out > "Mercury." |
2023-04-22 | SOAMelt | Hollywood, CA | 13:35 | Beginning with the now familiar seam splitting descent, what erupts from the glowing core is a white hot fountain of liquid play from Trey. Fed from a shimmering reservoir of Page's piano and synths and driven to a boil by Mike and Fish, Trey's trills sustain jets of phosphorescent sound that cascade and decay before returning to "Melt" once again. |
2023-04-22 | CDT | Hollywood, CA | 22:58 | Propulsive play out of the gate settles into a spirited melodic space. The space expands as the band moves into dreamier territory, albeit with an unrelenting foundation courtesy of Fishman. A brief switch to minor key occurs with an infectious riff from Trey, before moving back towards major key. A high-powered touch-the-sky crescendo follows before settling into a brief funky groove that executes a nifty -> "Twist." |
2023-04-22 | Sneakin' Sally | Hollywood, CA | 10:25 | > from "2001". Eschewing the vocal jam, Sally gets the extended treatment for the first time in years. Mike's play shines through from the beginning as he leads the groove-based jam. The tempo gradually picks up, before > "Back on the Train". |
2023-04-23 | Cities | Hollywood, CA | 18:48 | This first set delight comes out the gate with swingin' swagger. Trey locks the band into Bmin to escape the confines of "Cities" proper and the band develops an incredibly cohesive, melodic, effect-drenched boogie down. After the 12 minute mark, the music takes a hazy, cinematic turn towards patient psychedelia. This then develops into a gorgeous, technicolor dreamscape that crescendos towards anthemic territory before > "Tube." |
2023-04-23 | Mr. Completely | Hollywood, CA | 18:18 | Another huge version of the once rare song in the catalog. Plucky playing from Trey around 9:30 changes the jam's trajectory. The searching, grimy jam sounds like the background to a noir detective show at times. The tempo gets kicked up towards the end, before eventually > "A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing". |
2023-04-23 | ASIHTOS | Hollywood, CA | 9:32 | > from "Mr. Completely" comes a completely unhinged jam that immediately dives headfirst into an unrelenting, grinding, grimy groove, and in the blink of an eye flows back -> into "Mr. C". Heavy. |
2023-04-23 | Mr. Completely | Hollywood, CA | 0:55 | -> from "A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing" to close out the "Mr C" > "ASIHTOS" -> "Mr C" sandwich. |
2023-04-23 | Wolfman's | Hollywood, CA | 13:56 | A thumping, relentless version marked by Mike's new bass. Trey plays with loops and gives Mike a run for his money with bass effects of his own before leading things in a more melodic direction over a soft bed of Page's keys and driven, as always, by the "brother" himself. The jam eventually cools and fades, unfinished, on a curl of ambience that breaks for "Ruby Waves". |
2023-07-21 | Stash | Burgettstown, PA | 14:45 | Gets a tweak and changes keys shortly before 7:00 but retains "Stash's" light-on-its-feet jazzy swing. Later, a lovely underwater passage leads into major bliss, where the jam stays for the remainder. |
2023-07-21 | Sigma Oasis | Burgettstown, PA | 16:17 | All four members are right up front contributing creatively without hesitation, actively listening, remaining locked in and punchy with direction. An upbeat set 2 opener that segues neatly into "The Final Hurrah". |
2023-07-21 | The Final Hurrah | Burgettstown, PA | 9:00 | -> from "Sigma Oasis." This fun tune has an upbeat jam for a while before giving way to a slowdown with Trey soloing over the rest of the band creating a cool texture for him. Fish really shines here. The jam dissolves and eventually > into the debut of "Pillow Jets." |
2023-07-21 | Pillow Jets | Burgettstown, PA | 11:12 | Phish debut version downshifts after 6:00, becoming more moody and atmospheric before mounting another round of heavier rock which washes into > "David Bowie". |
2023-07-22 | Everything's Right | Burgettstown, PA | 22:30 | Opening the second set for the first time in ten plays, this version hearkens back to the heavy-hitting 2021 "ERs." The band is fully locked-in, navigating the jam as one entity. Trey eventually winds back to the "Na na na, yeah" lyrics of the song before it > "Soul Planet." |
2023-07-22 | Soul Planet | Burgettstown, PA | 14:13 | Hard-charging out of the gates through 7:15 when it settles into an ethereal transition, then winds up again for a heartening resolution and floats into -> "Twist". |
2023-07-25 | Gin | Philadelphia, PA | 14:35 | Fans of Mike will want to seek out this excellent version. Listen for his deft finger work and fluid fret runs throughout to propel the improvisational conversation. Segues neatly into "BOTT". |
2023-07-25 | The Well | Philadelphia, PA | 19:56 | Taking the set 2 anchor spot in only its second Phish outing, Trey's new Tom penned piece is a study in contrasts. Bluebirds and shimmering piano work give way to manic screams and a multipart jam that samples the water at multiple depths. Dipping first into jagged play and thick snarl, then lifting into plucky staccato melodies that lead to a vocal reprise and false ending before dropping the bucket for another load of muck and an absolutely disgusting peak. Fish wants more. |
2023-07-28 | A Wave of Hope | New York, NY | 21:00 | Setting the tone for the highlight-rich MSG run to come, the band drops a multi-faceted monster in the 2 slot. Pure inertia pushes the band through several sections with impressive cohesion before eventually coalescing around a triumphant chord progression. All four band members then lock in to deliver a powerful climax, before yielding to the closing chorus. |
2023-07-28 | Cities | New York, NY | 14:16 | Big Red's love affair with The Big Apple, coupled with his renewed interest in jamming "Cities," yields a whole lotta good points. Chill playing ushers in fantastic, truly rhythmic improvisation, Trey's strumming offering a shimmery, warm, almost shoegaze feel - and, most importantly, room for the entire band to breathe. Play pulses until just after the 8:00 mark, when Trey takes a really great lead, which he builds into patterned play that bursts with a celebratory vibe. A nod to Trey's old home place, indeed. |
2023-07-28 | Plasma | New York, NY | 14:06 | > "Ruby Waves," and breaking for "Simple," strong, almost muscular play, informed by righteous riffing, showcases, yet again, the song's promise as a true show stopper. |
2023-07-28 | SOAMelt | New York, NY | 14:20 | Eschewing the typical rocking Set 2 closer, this version of "Melt" is a complete and utter deconstruction. It's wild and daring. Fans of heavy, dark or "evil" Phish will want to check this one out ASAP. |
2023-07-29 | DwD | New York, NY | 18:38 | Stays in the song's upbeat outro until cooling into a minor section at 7:00 that bridges the gap to the heart of the jam around 8:50 when it's driven into soulful bliss that runs through 14:00, after which a coda prods in a new direction and brings things to a close. |
2023-07-29 | Fuego | New York, NY | 30:04 | Veritable monster of a version that works as an emblematic example of Phish's comfort in MSG. Focused patience marks the affair, as "soundcheck" vibes abound. Eventually the grooves turn spacier and funkier around the 20:00 mark, before building towards a major key rock out. The music then downshifts into heavenly "hose" territory, with Trey looping infectious '99-esque repeated licks and subtly reintegrating the "Fuego" melody for a stunning finale. |
2023-07-30 | Bag | New York, NY | 11:38 | More Burlington than Boise, the jam brings to mind early play where the band, opening a set, deftly moves through a song to extend bend-but-not-quite-breaking-free improvisation. Make no mistake, though: Trey and Fish, ticking like a bomb, decidedly get the show on the road. |
2023-07-30 | My Friend | New York, NY | 10:06 | No clever ruse, "MFMF" goes big again, Trey working the song's melodic outro into a dark, driving solo; this is impassioned jamming that, in spots, sounds like "Fuego." Fire play, either way, that, incredibly, sees Page jumping from his piano to his keys before -> for "Gin" and, of course, a return to his piano. |
2023-07-30 | Theme | New York, NY | 10:47 | Playful, sprite, and inventive, this is no deep dive, a la 1997, but rather a reflection of Trey's recent penchant to embrace, then explore, recent goofiness. Whacky vocals, "funky" otherness, Trey, way out front and in full effect, moves through his bag of tricks, offering a version that settles to become quite serious, a take on this classic that's not to be missed. |
2023-07-30 | Life Saving Gun | New York, NY | 12:57 | Debut. Trey and Page's new "Gunn" inflected banger goes big in its live debut. Focused and inventive play moves with purpose through several layers of varying texture, weaving a tapestry of sound that is a true stand out among tour highlights. Breaks > for "No Men". |
2023-07-30 | NMINML | New York, NY | 18:15 | A fully realized version that feeds on the preceding improvisation, launching itself off ferocious peaks to unfold into a layered and looped blossom of effects that provides a space where melodic lines and muscular leads can weave into a taut and textured fabric. Trey is fluid and confidently in charge throughout, guiding the improvisation over multiple peaks to a smooth decrescendo. |
2023-07-30 | Light | New York, NY | 13:10 | Strange and cool jam. Play quickly, and especially for "Light," becomes muddled and murky. This isn't to suggest the version isn't musical or, in parts, melodic; rather, the first part of the jam possesses many unique qualities. Just for a bit. Pleasant bleakness considerably brightens, and that by way of experimental play is erased by a bright, peak-driven conclusion. |
2023-08-25 | Moma | Saratoga Springs, NY | 13:32 | Extended take drops into murky funk right out of the gate and luxuriates in that space. A mode shift then brings in a more introspective minor-key vibe with notably spry Mike play. Fluid Trey soloing leads Page towards a seamless mode change towards lydian space, before Trey finds the "Moma" melody to close out the affair. |
2023-08-25 | Ocelot | Saratoga Springs, NY | 8:26 | This jam takes off around six minutes in, when Trey's soaring play, Fish's fills, Mike's thundering bass and Page's impressive play all coalesce to give this version an unusually fierce ending. |
2023-08-25 | Sand | Saratoga Springs, NY | 13:19 | The "We Welcome You to Munchkinland" teases from Trey start at 6:45 and don't stop as they become the theme of this bizarrely triumphant jam on the 84th Anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz's" release. |
2023-08-25 | A Wave of Hope | Saratoga Springs, NY | 22:12 | The jam begins in earnest, propelled with vigor by the rhythm section while Trey and Page build layers. There is some searching midway as a slow build leads to fine peak directed noodling from Trey that eventually peters into transitional space. The band then pushes through several minutes of percussive grit before Trey takes charge again, steering them to Simple. |
2023-08-25 | Simple | Saratoga Springs, NY | 21:53 | -> from an expansive "AWoH". This multi-sectioned journey initially takes off in a minor key and plants its flag there as Trey's looping and Mike's cascading high octave wash apply density and complexity. The grooves grow polyrhythmic before coalescing into a dark, intense, effects-laden attack. A seemingly composed rhythm shift then leads the band towards anthemic territory with fluid Trey playing, before yielding to an extended passage of midnight-dark ambience to close. Fantastic. |
2023-08-25 | CDT | Saratoga Springs, NY | 10:30 | Less a typical "CDT" jam and more akin to the soundtrack of a slasher film as the killer gives chase to another victim. Extended, spine-tingling dissonance raises the tension to obscene levels before the usual closing section, after which it cranks up twice more to insanity and concludes with a tease of "We Welcome You to Munchkinland" for a bizarre juxtaposition which could only make sense in the weird, wonderful world of Phish. Deranged, but awesome. |
2023-12-28 | Funky Bitch | New York, NY | 6:50 | More punch than normal in every respect. Mike's vocals; Page's work on the piano - electric or otherwise; Fish's Fish; and Trey's play (his deployment of the echoplex and a bit more by way of soloing): Excellent. |
2023-12-28 | Gin | New York, NY | 17:23 | Spacious playing sets the tone before a shift at the 7 minute mark turns towards introspective psychedelia, led by a cascade of synthesizers and Rhodes piano from Page. Mike then suggests some spicy modulatory directions before an energetic major key motif takes hold. The band rides this all the way as Trey takes his time to build a smooth yet powerful crescendo before yielding to the "Gin" motif, puddling into mind-scrambling guitar effects, and > "Ghost". |
2023-12-28 | A Wave of Hope | New York, NY | 23:35 | > from "The Howling", "AWOH" continues its run of huge, improv-heavy versions in 2023. Heavy effects from Trey early give way to a slowed tempo by the 10 minute mark. The band shows patience as they work through the jam. At 17:00, in a place where you might expect a new song to pop out, they instead find a new groove. Sprite play from Trey sends the jam into a feel-good, upbeat place. The jam fizzles to an end and -> into "Rift". |
2023-12-28 | Mike's | New York, NY | 10:32 | The namesake sound effects from the set's preceding "The Howling" are repeated in the intro, and then this "Mike's" launches into an appropriately funky jam to further cement the former's influence before becoming more typical at 7:15 as it crescendos into the closing chords, then > "Simple". |
2023-12-28 | Simple | New York, NY | 14:01 | A tale of two "Simples". Providing a great contrast from a notable "Mike's", the band drops quickly into less by way of bebop to traverse more bucolic terrain. A welcome approach, the version rewards repeated listens-given that the extended improvisation is ineffable-before Trey subtly signals a change, leading the band with unusual, restrained soloing that builds but doesn't break. |
2023-12-29 | Theme | New York, NY | 10:36 | A soaring, muscular version distinguished by bright and conversational interplay is especially notable for the return of Trey's "Deluxe Reverb" which paints the affair with cascades of crystalline peaks, settling eventually into a cloud of sound that uncurls into "Mountains in the Mist". |
2023-12-29 | CDT | New York, NY | 22:24 | A teeth-gnashing multi(sectioned)beast of a jam, this take traverses through various disparate yet cohesively-arranged themes, including hyper-drive psychedelic rock, "Woo's", dense mind-bending dissonance and finally, a stoner/doom metal-esque dirge that grinds down > "Oblivion". |
2023-12-29 | Oblivion | New York, NY | 16:26 | After a brief stay in the minor synth zone, the jam trends more upbeat by 8:00 and shortly thereafter features more seriously rocking riffage, then deftly turns on the hose with a few long sustained notes from Trey along the way for a surefire crowd-pleasing conclusion. |
2023-12-29 | My Friend | New York, NY | 10:21 | A spirited version in its own right, Trey's vocal incantations (and power chords) build into a blistering "heavy metal" jam capped with a ferocious, percussive outro; here's swagger that winds down to inform an uncanny groove - like a series of handstands in grand fashion. -> into "Sand". |
2023-12-29 | Hood | New York, NY | 14:12 | Because the divergent "Hood" has become ubiquitous in recent years, sticking to the classic format and delivering a purely "Type I" jam as this version does is a welcome subversion, especially when the climactic build and peak are executed as passionately as they are here. Old-school "Hood" lovers, this one's for you. |
2023-12-30 | Fuego | New York, NY | 16:40 | Soars out of the verses into mild weirdness with Trey and Page synthing it up while Mike and Fish keep things on track with a strong pulse, then locks into a tremendous heavy-duty groove just before 11:00 and rocks out until a short interlude and -> "Train Song". |
2023-12-30 | Life Saving Gun | New York, NY | 13:08 | > from "It's Ice". The song's first set debut and it fits the role of set-closer like a glove. The jam is a raucous, high-energy affair. It peaks, keeps on going and then peaks again. |
2023-12-31 | Bag | New York, NY | 18:50 | In the shadow of a resurrected rhombus, the "March of The Multibeast" opens an improvisational portal fitting of the historic moment. At once dark and strident, sinister and celebratory, what would be an exceptional excursion under any circumstances becomes transformational in context and relentless in effect. Trey's beastly snarl is finally cooled only by the arrival of the mysterious Tela herself. |
2023-12-31 | Wilson | New York, NY | 4:11 | Although you may dislike or even hate it, this version involved a chorus and co-lead actor-vocalist Jo Lampert (who also helped narrate the "Gamehendge" performance), to Trey's delight in particular. |
2023-12-31 | Loving Cup | New York, NY | 8:03 | Erupting from the song, proper, Trey lays into a series of fist-pump power chords, pushes through some "Woos," and pours it on. Infectious, electric play finds Page pounding his keys as the band plays a perfect take for their punchdrunk fans. |
2023-12-31 | Possum | New York, NY | 10:05 | This extra-mustard thrasher of a version serves as a fitting capstone to a legendary night. Seemingly unwilling to let the night end, Trey and Co. blow past the goal posts with unbridled joy, with a series of false peaks giving way to a mountain-top crescendo and fanfare conclusion. |
2024-08-11 | 46 Days | Bethel, NY | 9:23 | Trey screws around early, setting a great (if strange) tone, and an excellent, somewhat demented jam develops. Naturally, Mike features heavily. Some of the most off-beat Phish - the sort of improv one could listen to for days - does, in time, sync up, building to an upbeat, if familiar, conclusion. |
2024-08-11 | Gin | Bethel, NY | 18:28 | After toying a bit with beat and meter, play calms at 6:30, and Trey, atop Fish, runs through a nice solo, informed by a (welcome) melody you've heard before. A few minutes later play nearly stills, with Mike and Page emerging to inform much by way of synthy sound. Trey latches on, and in time the jam, pushed by Fish, breaks to become a full-band celebratory affair - music, perhaps at its best, when Page jumps to his concert grand. |
2024-08-11 | Bag | Bethel, NY | 21:21 | Another big "Bag" following NYE 23's masterpiece, though in lieu of tracking a multi-beast, Trey follows his instincts and summer's touring sound. Halfway through the version Trey discovers a great theme and we're off on another, special, voyage (somewhat reminiscent of MSG's sound), the jam then moving through a number of highly charged and disparate improvisational passages. |
2024-12-28 | Simple | New York, NY | 12:59 | Opens the NYE run with a bang right out of the gates with a jam that first plays on the usual "Simple" theme with gusto and then flows directly into a more rhythmic transition segment. From there, the intensity quickly rises to a frenzy and concludes with a celebratory peak before returning home. |
2024-12-29 | Bag | New York, NY | 9:51 | Just prior to 5:00 this version follows the recent trend of veering from the normal progression into "Type II" territory and continues with an upbeat jam until a brief return to "Bag" to close. |
2024-12-29 | Moma | New York, NY | 9:30 | Though the actual jam is of the typical variety, this version distinguishes itself with its patiently extended intro, reminding us all once again just how comfortable the band feels in the Garden that is Round. |
2024-12-29 | Caspian | New York, NY | 12:46 | Play downshifts from "Caspian's" typical melodic volley towards murkier minor-key territory, evoking "A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing". The music then shifts towards major key, eventually leading back to "Prince Caspian's" chorus to close it out. |
2024-12-29 | Runaway Jim | New York, NY | 10:16 | Extended tension building and tonal changes send this jam spiraling to an eventual triumphant release. Excellent normal-lengthed version. |
2024-12-29 | YEM | New York, NY | 18:02 | Perhaps the chillest version to date with a jam segment that consists solely of a laidback funk groove that never rises above a whisper, and after a brief vocal jam -> "Ghost". |
2024-12-29 | Ruby Waves | New York, NY | 36:37 | A colossal, must-hear "Wave" washes over Madison Square Garden. The jam expands exponentially through multiple sections, including contemplative but optimistic melodicism, driving rhythmic play, and harmonically dense electro-funk before finally crash landing back to the "Ruby Waves" theme, concluding the epic journey. |
2024-12-31 | My Friend | New York, NY | 19:59 | After a generous helping of the aggressive murk we've perhaps come to expect from recent plays, the jam cools slightly and settles into an atypically groove laden space that pulses with hypnotic energy and drive, eventually sharpening on the edge of Trey's incisive riffing and concluding with a vocal reprise in lieu of the "myfe" ending. |
2024-12-31 | Pillow Jets | New York, NY | 13:38 | Part of the NYE festivities with additional vocals from the conjurors of thunder, the jam is primarily a moody, dark affair that eventually builds to a crescendo. |
2024-12-31 | WGTYM | New York, NY | 17:13 | The centerpiece of the NYE '24 extravaganza with additional backing vocals, the jam takes a drastic turn into EDM, a genre heretofore unexplored on the Phish stage, and is interspersed with vocal quotes from several other Phish tunes (see setlist notes) before finally crashing -> into "CDT". |
