Jam Chart for Wading in the Velvet Sea (10 entries)

Date City Timing Notes
1997-07-02 Amsterdam, Netherlands 7:29 Slow, syrupy, yet anything but saccharine, a dizzy, patient performance perfectly encapsulates an important side of the band's Euro '97 sound. Triumphant, yet melancholy, fans of the song, or Trey, generally, could do worse than to start, and end, here. A masterpiece.
1997-07-21 Virginia Beach, VA 8:15 The solo section begins all the way down, allowing Trey to expertly switch between sparkling chord arpeggiations and soaring single note lines with supreme patience, before his cathartic, Leslie-affected chording brings it home.
1998-11-15 Murfreesboro, TN 9:27 Has a superb, serene and delicate outro jam which @ucpete notes sounds similar to the ending of the "Waves" soundcheck from 5/26/11 (and he's right about this).
1999-12-16 Raleigh, NC 10:20 Typically melodious and soaring "Wading" fare abounds in the solo section. As the closing vocals appear to signal the end, a ghostly ambient wash then creeps in and makes itself at home before moving > "Tweezer"".
2003-02-21 Cincinnati, OH 8:07 Rough, rugged, and raw, a glimpse (the video is up on YouTube) of the band - Page included - at their most vulnerable. But boy, man. It's Phish. Pouring it on through an incredibly difficult point in their history. Listen to Trey's sustain. Then stick around for the closing coda. It's almost too much.
2010-12-27 Worcester, MA 7:00 Mike is much more active and melodic in his accompaniment than usual, turning this version into a mesmerizing duet with Trey.
2013-10-23 Glens Falls, NY 7:55 Following a strong "Twist," this heartfelt rendering of "Wading" provides a graceful interlude before a powerful "Hood."
2014-07-13 New York, NY 8:01 What a difference an era makes. Or not. Mike surprises, early on, offering just a bit more. Pushing through a few sour notes, Trey, playing with his feet almost as much as his hands, lays into an impassioned solo, offset by, no surprise, on-point Fish. Of course Page is nearly front and center, and is right there to bring this Randall's Island play to a memorable close.
2016-12-30 New York, NY 9:00 Extended take begins by bringing the music to hush, with dynamically delicate nuance setting the table. Trey's liquid sustain glides with Mike's economical bass fills, slowly building to a soaring conclusion.
2024-10-27 Albany, NY 7:22 Showing up as the penultimate song in Set 2, this "Wading" is not at all perfunctory. Beautiful and emotive play shines through, hearkening back to the nascent days of the song.
Jam chart versions are selected because of improvisational and other characteristics that distinguish these from typical versions of the song.
The jam chart team has highlighted some versions with a yellow background; these are the versions the team believes to be especially improvisational, or otherwise notable.
