Jam Chart for the state of DC (19 entries)

Date Song City Timing Notes
1990-06-07 Tweezer Washington, DC 12:32 Crazy, long early version. At one point Mike sounds like he will break into into "Heartbreaker."
1990-06-07 Weekapaug Washington, DC 7:26 Dissonant jam with lots of "DEG"-like jamming.
1990-10-08 Magilla Washington, DC 6:51 Odd and awesome early version which, in addition to great jazz-inflected soloing by Trey, Page and Mike, also features somewhat dark, almost dissonant jamming before the ending.
1990-10-08 Antelope Washington, DC 10:33 Good jam that gets very improvisational, especially after 5:30. Machine Gun Trey in combat duty in the latter part of the jam.
1991-02-19 Bowie Washington, DC 12:34 Good intro. Raging "Type I" version with an unusual stop mid-jam (possibly the power went out).
1991-02-19 SOAMelt Washington, DC 8:06 Beginning of the jam is very cool with several near stops by the band. Then there's piercing, ear-splitting playing by Trey.
1991-02-19 Magilla Washington, DC 5:20 Page-written, Trey-driven. Or so it often seems. Here, Trey works in a "Theme from the Flintstones" tease before easing through a series of slashing, jazzy chords, and a bright, melodic line. Fish solos, making for a great outro. "Fire" follows to cap off this cool encore.
1991-11-16 Gin Washington, DC 7:41 Good early "Gin." The jam (like most from pre-August '93) is grinding, decelerating and somewhat dissonant. Nothing like the melodic hose jams that would emerge later. This one also has amusing screaming and yelling at the end.
1991-11-16 Brother Washington, DC 5:53 Some unusual bass lines from Mike and organ playing by Page create a strong sense of tension in this ripper.
1991-11-16 YEM Washington, DC 20:54 Must-hear jam segment; legendary "Mrs. Pizza Shit" YEM.
1992-03-17 It's Ice Washington, DC 8:46 Almost sounds like 1997 five years early with Page's funky sounding organ. Must-hear.
1993-02-07 Runaway Jim Washington, DC 8:18 Really cool version with Trey (5:27) leading the band through extended "DEG"-like play, before (5:52) entering what sounds like "Rift". This, then, into raw and raucous soloing, which brings the version to a customarily strong close.
1993-02-07 Reba Washington, DC 13:54 A crazy composed section with a lot of hissing and screaming (affectionately known as the "Baguette" version), breaks for a jam featuring playing both fluid and somewhat jarring. In time, Mike provides a great beat over which Trey creates a cool vibe. The band modulates intensity to inform an exploratory space, within which the musicians coalesce to create a sound supercharged and sonic. Trey then pushes the band through an erratic, but wholly controlled peak.
1993-02-07 YEM Washington, DC 21:54 Excellent version with "Clementine" VJ.
1993-12-28 Possum Washington, DC 12:05 Jazzy, exploratory and quiet beginning to the jam. The power cranks up with "Kashmir" teases and then gets blistering hot.
1993-12-28 YEM Washington, DC 20:30 Great opening segment!
1999-12-15 DwD Washington, DC 15:24 Compared to most '99s, the jam here breaks earlier into a light, textured groove that intensifies as it returns to "DwD."
1999-12-15 Gin Washington, DC 16:45 A gentle straightforward jam transforms into a nice groove-based jam around 10:30 and eventually works back to "Gin."
1999-12-15 Free Washington, DC 16:11 Jam starts in typical fashion, but then Trey hits the keyboards for an extended and very different version.
Jam chart versions are selected because of improvisational and other characteristics that distinguish these from typical versions of the song.
The jam chart team has highlighted some versions with a yellow background; these are the versions the team believes to be especially improvisational, or otherwise notable.
