"Simeon" is a composition birthed during an NYC songwriting collaboration of Trey and Tom Marshall in the summer of 2025 and appears to tell of a person beckoning for others, first calling out to celestial spots, moving closer to terrestrial terrain, and then referencing the heavens again. In Tom's words upon he and Trey meeting to write the song: "Trey immediately liked these lyrics. They were a touch absurd, yet he recognized something elegant in them and wrote a beautiful song around them."
Video by Owen PerkinsIt didn't take long for "Simeon" to appear live with Trey debuting the song a few months later during the Trey Anastasio Band fall tour that November along with "Real You" and "Mindless Mood." It immediately inserted itself as a beautiful encore opening ballad performed by Trey on acoustic guitar with quiet backing from his band (sans horns) and Jennifer Hartswick, Natalie Cressman, and Kenneth Whalum later blending in vocals in response to the repeated "another day is done" lyric. "Simeon" quickly became a consistent song selection during the tour, appearing four more times before the end of the month.
"Simeon" joined the Phish catalog as the encore opener on the third night of their Mexican run of shows in January, 2026, as part of a trend where each night featured a song played for the first time by Phish ("Fling Your Head" and "Dancing In Midair" on the previous two nights respectively). Given the amount of songs played during Phish's Mexican shows on the beach to feature lyrics that tie into the experience, "Simeon" and its sand was a perfect fit.
