Music may have disappeared from MTV but that hasn't stopped the cable network from launching a new awards show to honor "the art, creativity, personality and technology of music into the digital space." Categories include "Innovative Artist," "Best iTunes LP" and "Funniest Music Short." We're pleased to announce that Phish.net has been nominated in the "Best Fan Forum" category and voting is open to anyone with a Facebook account, Twitter feed and/or a mobile phone.
To vote, head over to the "Best Fan Forum" voting page and press the "Connect Now" button towards the right hand side to connect your phone, Twitter feed or Facebook page with the site. Then, press the "Vote" button next to Phish.net's name and logo. Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 20. I had three drum lessons when I was 13 to learn how to read from a guy named Dave Hanlon in Syracuse. The only other lessons I've ever had were from Joe and they were 15 years apart. I went to him in '09 for the second one. I kind of knew this was coming after leaving that lesson. I'm very sad about this. My entire rudimentary practice routine has come from him. The last lesson I had with him was basically a confirmation that everything he had told me 15 years earlier was right and that I should stay on that track. What he taught me was literally the foundation of everything I will ever do on the drums and the value of having the confidence of knowing the instruction I received from him is as sound as it is can not be over stated. I owe him for correcting my mistakes, putting me on a right path and keeping me on it. Amazing. I am so grateful!"
If the Blog were being honest, it would admit that it was a bit displeased with last week's result. Well, the Blog is being honest. There just aren't that many reletively obscure 1994 type-II jams lying around and so, for RabeldyNugs to jump in and ruin it for everyone (and by everyone, I mean me) by guessing it was, frankly, a bit disrespetful. Phish is in the running in ESPN Radio personality Colin Cowherd's Best Rock Band contest. "Herd" put 64 bands into four regional brackets (ala NCAA), with Phish as 10th seed in the Midwest (behind the White Stripes at 9, and ahead of the Beastie Boys at 11). Mike Gordon is an artist. Anyone who has studied his body of work knows that his creativity knows no bounds, mostly to the joy of others, though often also to their cheerful confusion and bemusement. His approach to art in general and music specifically is seen through a singularly distinctive lens that begs additional exploration. So when we had the chance to chat last week, I wanted to talk about his approach to his art.
Gordon is a pleasant kind of guy, and within seconds he had done his part to cast away the awkwardness of a typical interview. I asked if we could talk about the song writing process and he dove right in. Was there a typical process involved in him bringing a finished song to his band or if he brought just skeletons to them, allowing the group to apply the final touches? "I would like to do more of the latter," Gordon said. While Moss was largely written before the band was assembled, he aspires to welcome his band more into the writing process.
