REMEMBERING JOHN GREENE

After a lengthy and courageous fight with cancer, on November 30, 2025, we lost John Greene - longtime Phish fan, one of Phish.net's very first users, keyboardist in the Bay Area's Phish tribute band Chum, and loving friend to so many of us in the community.

John was an important part of Phish's lore, not just in his faithful stylings of the band's catalog. He produced the "Esther" music video in 1991; his yeP! bandmate Matthew Laurence released the Amy's Farm footage on the blog in support of Mockingbird, and John was there filming it too (can you spot him in the footage with a camera on his shoulder?); and most recently, he let us interview him and release the long-lost Gamehendge CD-ROM footage that he had recorded 30 years prior and dutifully preserved in his archives. I was lucky enough to spend John's last Phish shows with him at Bill Graham on April 22 and 23, 2025.

Beyond music, John spent years openly sharing his experience living with cancer, writing honestly about treatment, uncertainty, and day-to-day life. His final post, written by his wife Heather as a farewell, is deeply moving and worth reading. In John’s memory, his son Orion has started a fundraising effort to support blood-cancer research. If you’re able and inclined, please consider donating to his Student Visionaries of the Year campaign to raise funds for Blood Cancer United here.

If you liked this blog post, one way you could "like" it is to make a donation to The Mockingbird Foundation, the sponsor of Phish.net. Support music education for children, and you just might change the world.

Pinhead_Larry I actually just watched some of Amy’s Farm not too long ago. I had no idea the man behind the camcorder had such a long and storied history with the band! RIP John, it’s a bit late but thank you for all you did for us! Clearly your influence and positivity continues to grow and inspire others. Thanks for everything!

Mshow96 RIP John

The Esther animation is truly legendary. Especially in today’s slop filled environment, it stands as a testament to human expression.

cleantone That's awful. My condolences to all his friends and family. If only we could focus our attention on figuring out Cancer. My own mother has just in the last few weeks had cancer taken out of her for the third time. For those who don't know, John Greene is the John who gave us his "special tape" of 4hrs of previously unseen 1991 Phish footage.

OrangeSox Really sad news but he sure seems to have enjoyed a life well lived nevertheless. Thanks John for all your contributions here and elsewhere. May his family make peace with his loss and remember him forever. Thanks for sharing with us @uctweezer

Cellosong0 Long time follower of .net here - and thank you all as I’ve been following this page for …15-20 years and just created a login today. (Have seen 80+ shows going back to Dane County 95 etc).

I’ve never posted but wanted to chime in here (chum in here?) having lived in the bay for years and watching John at his trusty keyboard with Chum was always amazing. He had the cancer “survivor” sign behind him at all times
on stage and was the warmest human to talk all things Phish and life before and after shows.

John - you are missed and loved by so many that watched you and your courage and your advocacy for the arts and Life with a capital L.

lcp2000 John and his crew were THE reason a 15 year old me felt so welcome and not completely out of place at my first show on 11/17/90. I was always happy to cross paths with him and I’ll never forget his contagious smile. May those who loved him and those he loved find comfort now and forever ❤️

sometimes you meet someone and think “sheesh this is one of the good ones” - that was John in a nutshell. He was such a special human and I miss him dearly, every day

chumsf Thanks for the nice write up, bud. We miss him everyday and are doing everything we can to help Orion continue his fight. I felt his presence so clearly on our last run of shows and I leaned on him for inspiration more than once while looking for a way to push the music forward. Hope to see you soon!

rchapin5 Sad to hear of John's passing. I was a computer science student focusing on graphic design at UMass when he worked the animation lab in the mid 90s. We weren't super close but ran into each other in the lab quite a bit. He was always fun to talk to and willing to help out with any questions I had. Got to catch him play live with yeP! at the Iron Horse for what I believe was their Halloween show, 1994 if I'm remembering correctly. Last time I saw him we randomly bumped into each other on the concert field at Lemonwheel. We only chatted briefly but what I remember most was just how happy he was. It was a look of pure joy that I'll always remember about him. RIP buddy!
