We interrupt your regularly scheduled tour recaps to present a new-to-circulation recording: November 9, 1990, at Lounge Ax in Chicago, courtesy of the Aadam Jacobs Collection!

For those who are unfamiliar, Aadam Jacobs is a Chicago-based taper who has recorded, at best estimate,10,000 shows over the years. A group of volunteers from the Live Music Archive are in the process of digitizing and archiving his collection for future generations to enjoy.

Phish.net user---and one of the founders of the excellent Hausu Maintain Records---MrDougDoug alerted me that this show was uncirculated and potentially in Aadam’s archive. For anyone interested in the back story of how we eventually found the master cassette and got it into circulation, I invite them to read this extensive post on the official AJC blog about what it took to get this tape into people's ears.

On this particular night, Phish was opening for Alex Chilton and performed a classic, albeit short, 1990 set. In just over an hour, you get a perfect sample of all the things that make early Phish so intoxicating. Humor, insane musicianship, fire-breathing guitar solos and Trey screwing up the lyrics to “The Lizards.” How can anyone not like this band?

I've taped and shared many shows, but never Phish. So, on a personal level, this was a fun opportunity to give something back to the community. On a broader level, the team behind the Aadam Jacobs project is very happy to present this to the fans. We invite you to poke around at the collection and listen to some of the other gems we have already archived. As we like to say, No Tape Left Behind!

Download and stream it from the AJC collection on the LMA!
