RIVIERA MAYA1 RECAP: DANCE PARTY ON THE BEACH

[We would like to thank user Kelly Wilson @KellyNICU for this recap. -Ed.]

There’s no better feeling than dancing to your favorite band with your favorite people.

As always, the energy in the crowd was palpable. People had been partying in the pools all day waiting for their band to play. On night one of Mexico we ended up staying on our balcony facing the stage because how often do you get a chance to do that? We met some strangers who soon became friends, and invited them up to dance with us because that’s what Phish is all about.

After a bit of a wait, the band opened their only set of the night with "Lizards," featuring delicate yet strong piano solos, a patient, spot-on solo from Trey, and the crowd cheering to our mantra “surrender to the flow.”Next up was “Moma Dance,” which found Mike holding it down, while Trey played dark and dirty over his basslines. The bust-out “Peaches and Regalia” was a crowd favorite, with Trey’s guitar absolutely on every note.

“I Never Needed You Like This Before” continued the rock party, followed by the smoking-hot dance number “Funky Bitch”, one of my personal favorites.

“Tweezer” may seem ironic in Mexico, but Kuroda helped keep it red hot, with his red and white lights washing over the crowd and beach. “Tweezer” also included a gorgeous "Lizards" tease.

"Piper" continued the show by echoing around in circles, and jamming until it was all jammed out. “Soul Planet” always encourages the masses to be kind and to love each other because, after all, the ocean is love!

“Meat” was slow and funky as it should be, with Fishman including his now trademark “YEAH!” The spanking-new Sci-Fi Soldier album (from their Halloween creation) produced the next song , “The Howling”, yet another dance favorite, and with the dogs barking via Paige.

“Shade” finally slowed things down to let people take a breath and enjoy their time south of the border and over the moon. Then the upbeat “Evolve” got everyone dancing again. Trey, in typical Trey fashion, gratefully thanked his fans before moving on to a raging “Tube."

“Sigma Oasis” and a raging “Sand” closed-out the set, getting the crowd sweating once again. And when it was time for the encore, Dave Matthews joined the band to play “So Damn Lucky” and “The Maker,” before helping Trey rock “Tweezer Reprise.”

What a show. What a band. We are truly the ones that are so damn lucky!

Tiddlywinks Did everyone know this was only going to be a one set show? Is the rest of the weekend two sets?

TaterTotReprise I am glad I was not the only one surprised of 1 set. I thought I fell into a time warp.
