Nothing particularly noteworthy in the main set - the highlight for me is the version of Caravan to lead off the encore, with great playing and Russ Remington introducing the Manteca tease, which the rest of the band picks up. Alumni Blues would be another highlight, the 2nd of only three appearances on the GCH tour, but the SBD tape runs out after a minute and a half! Awwww!

This was my first Phish show. As I remember, it was part of the CMJ Music Marathon convention, which was an annual event in New York City. CMJ (College Music Journal) would curate shows across the city where bands would hope to meet music executives who like what they do and want to sign them to labels, etc. It was an opportunity for music fans to check out all kinds of acts they may not have known of or seen before.

In this case, I had listened to the Lawn Boy album on repeat in my dorm room but had never seen Phish live until this show. I remember a journalist coming up to me and asking some questions about how devoted the fans were and that it seemed like there was a lot of inside stuff going on that was over his head. I told him I was just as confused as he was.

Musically, I remember Oh Kee Pa > Suzy, Dinner and a Movie, the Hydrogen dance, my first and last Flat Fee, keytar for Frankenstein, arms in the air for Contact and Alumni Blues. Interesting that what stuck with me most were the Phishiest parts of the show---the parts with humor. Looking back, I'm surprised they didn't bust out the trampolines for the music execs.

This was a rare one-set show, which I always felt was appropriate for my first show, although I didn't get fully hooked until my second show, eight months later at the Broome County Forum on 3/20/92.

The opening act at the Academy was Yothu Yindi, an Australian/aboriginal group that will always hold a special place in my heart.

Nice segue from Landlady into DaaM. Solid second jam on Mike’s. Trey is en Fuego on Groove! After Groove Trey mentions that a lot of family are in attendance since they’re playing in NYC. He also takes this opportunity to introduce the GCH. Well played Flat Fee. Trey forgets the words to a section of Cavern and asks for some assistance from the audience. lol Before the encore Trey comments on how beautiful the room is and says he’s pretty sure they’ll be able to return and play a full two set show. That never happened, but Trey did return with the Surrender to the Flow project in ‘96 for two nights. The encore stars off with a beautiful Caravan. Like the version from last night this also has some Manteca teasing. Unfortunately the Alumni cuts out about a minute in.
