Having really taken off during the previous night's set 2 the band seemed done with banter and any nerves, and ready to get to business for night 3 in Copenhagen. The show kicks off with a straightforward but enthusiastic version of Birds of a Feather before settling in for set 1. Nothing here is touching the jam charts, but this definitely feels like a unique set... the intimate vibe remains as the band chooses to perform four of the more low key Story of a Ghost songs in a row (two of them debuts no less). After that they take crowd requests and decide, of all things, to shrug off a flawless version of Fluffhead as if it's no big deal at all. Punch You in the Eye and Character Zero close out the set in energetic, if standard, fashion. While there's nothing mind blowing here it's still a perfectly executed set 1 with rarities, not the type of set 1 that is easy to find, even for Phish.
At this point the band apparently decides to blow away the strong set 2 of the previous night with something even better. Rather than play 5 songs (with two making the jam charts) they bust out a 4 song set (THREE of which are noted in the jam charts). The Ghost is all funky fire before turning dark, a raging trip that caps off with some of the same ambience we got familiar with during the first two nights. This is one of those all time great versions of a jam vehicle that needs to be heard. The band then transitions into a Jim which happily bounces where the Ghost broodily bopped... until once again ambience slips in and gently glides them into a cathartic Caspian. They top things off with a YEM that probably hits an 11 on the rock scale, definitely one of those versions that just hits a little bit harder than your typical YEM. And then a very simple Simple encore closes out the three night run.
This is an interesting three shows to listen to... night one was slow to start but still fun, but all three nights had glimmers of creativity mixed in a setting that felt like the band was playing for a handful of their closest friends. The second sets of nights 2 and 3 are both worthy of a listen and overall, this still feels like Phish at their creative peak and an extension of the Fall '97-Island Tour feel. The band does not seem to be coming down from a high but still riding on the crest.
