BEYOND THE POND PODCAST: 50TH EPISODE EXTRAVAGANZA! TOP 10 FAVORITE PHISH SHOWS ATTENDED

Beyond the Pond is a bi-weekly podcast in which Brian Brinkman (@sufferingjuke) and David Goldstein (@daveg924) use the music of Phish as a gateway to introduce the listener to many other bands, the vast majority of which are not jambands. An episode generally begins with a deep dive into a designated portion of Phish improvisation, and then can spin off to any variety of musical themes and other acts, the overarching purpose being introducing the listener to as many new and different bands as possible.

(This post has since been updated to include Part 2 below Part 1)

We made it to FIFTY EPISODES! How cool is that! So while in a given episode, we would normally showcase plenty of non-jambands in addition to Phish, this time we’re going to give you a break and simply go long and self-indulgent on the Phish From Vermont. We’re each counting down our ten favorite Phish shows that we were able to see in person (i.e., none of us were at 12/31/95, so we aren’t talking about it). We also shout-out the many people, places, and things that aided us in our journey to this point. To keep this episode at a reasonable length, and to keep you hungry for more, we split it into two parts; this week features shows 10-6, and we’ll jump into the top 5 next week. Truly your cup runneth over this Thanksgiving.

We appreciate you listening, and are certain that you will learn something new over the course of just under two hours. You can review and subscribe to Beyond the Pond on iTunes, or simply listen through the player below.

lysergic I'm curious what the top 10 are. From the pics looks like 2 MSG, 2 Dick's, 1 magnaball, 1 jones beach, 1 MPP, ...not sure of the other three.

So obviously we have 7/27/14, saturday magnaball, and dick's FYF show. What are the others?

GAphishin I love the BTP boys! They have been a gateway as the theme of their show contends: Myopism be damned! Spread your wings and let your love of music fly! I loo. Forward to taking the time to listen for your til 10s. Congratulations and take care of your shoes!

dwayne I would, of course, include 12/31/95 on my list of best shows I've seen. Another particular show that I would argue belongs on the list, for me, is 6/14/1995 Mud Island with the 54 minute Tweezer. A review of that show by Amy Lee says, "this day changed my life"; I have probably echoed that sentiment. I have also previously claimed that on this day, Trey's guitar controlled the winds.

User_25597_ Big Cypress both shows are a no brainer, as are 11/21-22/97. 10/31/09, 10/31/18, 12/31/13, 7/3-4/99, 8/6-7/10. That's 11. I ain't even sorry.

phloyd79 You've got Alpine in the lower right corner... my guess would be '98, '99 or 2nd night '15...

Jboatner Great call on 8/14/2009. What excellent show that was. Pick up the f****ing book! And thanks for the heads up on 12/02/95. Bri: Yes, Vegas 2004 was certainly a time when the boys were not on, despite our high hopes. Keep em' comin!

tiggerphish My 10 favorites attended, starting with my first ....11/19/95, Charlotte NC 7/22/97 Raleigh, NC !1/21-22/97 Hampton,VA 8/9/98 Virginia Bch, VA, 7/7/99, Charlotte, NC, 12/16/99, Raleigh, NC, 8/14/15(Bday), Raleigh, NC, 8/10/18, Raleigh, NC, 10/19&21/18, Hampton,VA,...This is 11, yes I do know, so if 1 has to go then I'll put that in your hands. Leaving out 4 Hampton shows, 2 in 99 and 2 in 13 is brutal enough, not to mention the 11/23/97 Winston-Salem, NC show. I have been fortunate to have seen some scorchers in my 21 total shows. and take none of them for granted.
