i had the same feeling. in fact, i feel like it was a show i was at. that's why i fired off the 7/1/99 guess right off the bat. as soon as i guessed, i had a hunch that it was a halley's, leading me to think 11/11/98 or more so, possibly 9/18/00. alas, those are all the board as of wake up time. time to double check some jams...

Great choice, LBC. What an underrated set that was, with an all-time Boogie and Halley's, and solid versions of Twist and McGrupp, and...that's it. One of the all-time greats among the list of rare four-song sets:



Of course, this absolute SCORCHER of a set closer is overshadowed somewhat by the controversy of Trey's mid-song departure, a la the 10/31/98 Ghost. I was dead center, around the 25th row back. I kind of vaguely remember Trey flashing an annoyed look to his right (stage left), but it's foggy enough of a memory that I can't be sure of whether it's legitimately my own memory, or my lasting mental picture from hearing and reading other fans' stories of that moment.

What I clearly remember is, while the other three kept the groove, Trey took off his guitar, bowed, and walked off. I remember Mike and Page exchanging a glance, maybe showing a bit of confusion, but still maintaining decent poker faces. They then went with a fade out, exited stage right, and then minutes later the four of them returned uneventfully for the last two songs of 1.0 I'd see them play.

To use the parlance of our times, the level of "ripcording" in Trey's sudden departure has been built up way too much over the twelve-plus years since that show. Relistening to the Halley's jam today, I was surprised to hear them turn the heat down to a simmer a good minute or two before Trey exits, making the fade out sound absolutely natural. Given the rumors swirling about the details of the impending hiatus at the time, and with the 10/31/98 Ghost in recent memory (a far more jarring end to a jam than this one), I think it's very likely that fans perceived drama that did not exist. Does anyone else there who was there remember any other details that would support or disprove this?

I'm not particularly huge on watching past Phish shows -- as opposed to just listening to them -- but this is one song/set/show I'd absolutely love to see again someday.

yeah, boogie and halley's are keepers. i loved that mcgrupp too. personally, i found the twist to be downright boring. i knew my 7/1/99 pick was wrong about as soon as i posted it, and it hit me late last night that it was probably this halley's.... super pissed someone beat me to it.

side note, through a strange twist of events, this was my dad's one and only phish show. he loved the mmgamoio, the sloth, boogie, and this halley's jam. unfortunately, i haven't been able to get the old man back out for round 2.

^oh yeah, as for trey's walk off, I really have no idea. it's been a mystery i have not been able to really clear up over the last 12 years. I was absolutely rocking out to this brutal halley's, and then it stopped "sounding right" to me...

I looked up and trey was coming out of his bow. wtf?!

I have heard everything from he was getting pelted with glow sticks to he needed "a fix." i'm not sure either is true...

I'm with you though. I really don't "watch" phish, but of all the shows/songs i've seen, this is the one that i would like to see again the most, just to clear up the mystery.

@MiguelSanchez and @bl002e, it's so funny you bring up the walk-off. Disclaimer: I was at neither show, though I have watched the 10/31/98 video many times.

My theory was that he needed to take a shit-- in that thread there are some other guesses as well. There are a couple videos on PooTube from the 9/18/00 show, but not the Halley's (which I looked long and hard for in my "investigation" . Bummer for sure.

I listened to this jam over and over last week trying to figure out if I could find any signs in the music itself that would point to the imminent bail-out, but I couldn't find any. Alas, I was traveling yesterday and couldn't check in for the MJM, which for the first time, I *instantly* recognized. Bummer! Nice work @slaphappy, and nice work LBC-- not sure if you saw that thread but that basically was a gift MJM for me considering I listened to that jam over and over the last two weeks, yet the MJM whizzed right past me.

I may be able to shed some light on the walk off. I was third row, Trey side. Evan at that distance it was difficult to tell what they were saying. From what I could tell, Trey was actually concerned about braking curfew. Mike wanted to play another song. After destroying that Haley's Trey looked at him, said well then you do that, and bolted. Mike stood there dumfounded for a second, (probably realizing who cares about a curfew fine) then they all left. We weren’t exactly sure if that was what went down or now. We checked afterward and the encore did end about 2 minutes before the curfew. Not sure if that is the whole story or not. Regardless, it was a great second set, thought if the above is true, I agree with Mike, it could have used another song or three.

i agree. i think one more song after halley's, or maybe even a proper ending to that jam, could've made that a "classic set." even the encore seemed a little awkward after that. either way, the halley's jam was nasty, and mcgrupp and boogie were stand outs too. good times.

Thanks for the info! I figured it wasn't anything as dramatic as fans have made it over the years since. Again, without the 10/31/98 Ghost, I doubt this moment would have been obsessed over as much.
