Review by DemandOpener

DemandOpener Another early 1991 show with no reviews? Well, here I am to fill in the gaps. (Sorry we couldn't find anyone better.) Just a few notes on this mostly unremarkable early 1991 show:

Although Guelah Papyrus is still in its infancy, the band already seems pretty comfortable with it. Most of the other songs in the set are pretty average, although I will say that I'm not a big fan of the early, chromatic jamming style present in the majority of early Tweezers. I'm glad they figured out something else to do with it. Destiny Unbound, another song they are just getting comfortable with, is definitely worth noting for its unusual groove that it lacks in more of its straightforward renditions in the future.

Much like the Tweezer Reprise that was played earlier in the week, Chalk Dust doesn't quite have the power behind it that makes the song so awesome live today. It's still an enjoyable song, and features a good solo section, but it's just *not quite* there yet.

The second set begins with a great Bowie, one that should absolutely be written about on the jam chart. The jam segment features some excellent DEG-like jamming (not unlike any number of great early Bowies) before dropping into a fiery outro. This is the first unquestionable highlight of 1991!

The rest of the set is pretty ordinary, albeit another great appearance from The Mango Song, one of my favorites. I'm glad this song came back, and I'm disappointed that it will eventually disappear again. The SOAMelt is good but not particularly notable.

I will never say no to an encore of JJLC > BBFCFM. Those are some of my favorite acronyms!

Overall, I would give the show 3/5 stars for a great moment (Bowie) and a couple of well-played rarities (Destiny/Mango). Check it out if you're interested!
