History

This song, the opening tune on The Velvet Underground’s Loaded, inaugurated Phish’s 1998 Halloween “musical costume.” The band covered it solidly, albeit a bit meekly, keeping their version completely faithful to the original. This opening on cautious ground helped set a solid foundation upon which they would build the madness of, among other things, the “Sweet Jane,” “Rock and Roll,” and “Lonesome Cowboy Bill” to come.

"Who Loves the Sun" was not played again until 2/21/19 (after a 602 show gap), during Phish's third run of shows at Barceló Maya Beach in Mexico. After it was played early in the first set of the opening night, Trey acknowledged their love for the sun soaked venue stating, "For the sunburnt among you. You know, it still doesn't suck. It didn't suck last time and it doesn't suck now. Still un-sucky, still un-sucky all these years later."
