“It’s Happening Again” happened, ironically, just twice. Appearing exclusively, to date, on Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB’s May 2024 tour (5/17/24 and 5/19/24), the song features Anastasio on acoustic guitar, accompanied by his quartet. Both versions are roughly the same length and contain no real jam, other than an abbreviated but whimsical and frolic-filled keyboard solo.
Video by ThemooninpiscesOverall, it’s a character-driven, form-oriented song written during a songwriting retreat in Annapolis, MD in February, 2023. From Captain Blunt to Katrina, whatever is “happening again” is ominous, destructive, and — seemingly — irresistible. “This song is spooky and it haunts me,” lyricist Tom Marshall said during a July 2024 episode of his podcast, Undermine..
Perhaps, like some of the song’s fictional characters, it was quickly destined to become an oddity of obscurity — or perhaps the song and all its characters will surprise us with an unexpected pop-in every once in awhile… or, even, a grand return.
