The Voters for Choice benefit in Lowell, MA was a heck of a way to kick off the year in Phish for 1995. No fewer than ten songs were officially debuted on that evening, including future repertoire fixtures "Theme From the Bottom" and "Free."
The first of these debuts, to open the show, was a cover of the the respected Detroit gospel act The Meditation Singers' "Don't You Want To Go?" Written by the group's leader, Earnestine Rundless, and originally the title track to their 1967 release, this one is another in the long line of gospel songs about trains.
Phish stood little chance to match the power and intensity of the original version, but they offered respectable renditions at a handful of shows through the Summer of '95, three of its five performances in the show opening slot, but dropped the song from the repertoire after its only placement in the second set of 9/28/95 at the Summer Pops in San Diego, CA.
