Trey sang the verses of Fee unmiced. You Gotta See Mama Every Night was sung to Trey’s grandmother by her husband, Harry Jones, and was a Phish debut. The beginning of My Friend featured Trey on acoustic guitar. The Esther intro contained Random Note and Simpsons signals and the Secret Language Instructions featured introductions of the Random Note, Simpsons, and All Fall Down signals as well as Turn Turn Turn teases from Mike. YEM did not contain a vocal jam. The soundcheck included a performance of Slave (Rolling Stones).

Maybe this was to help Paul's mixing, but we have an Adeline opener? Anyway, not bad, right into a rocking Buried Alive. Trey is in a rush to transition into a pretty good Poor Heart. Ice was ok, maybe a few off spots from Mike. Fee was very dynamic and seriously Trey sang the verses off mic and the band and the crowd complied by bringing it way down. Maze rips as usual, but the end wasn't tight. IDK is fine with Johnny B. on washboard. Divided Sky had some off parts and felt very rushed. So now Trey announces that his grandpa is going to come up and sing a one timer debut for them. Very funny stuff as the band does HYHU as he gets up there. The Mama song itself is short and sweet and then it sounds like Fish starts Possum only to be cut off by Trey. So instead we have the first McGrupp played on the new piano for Page. Nicely done, for something not often played. Cavern was kind of a sloppy closer for a funny, reasonably well played first set.
My Friend had some rough spots from Mike, but has a cool swing ending and vocal jam. Curtain also had some roughness and a very rushed ending. Tweezer is pretty funny. I read that they had done Sweet Emotion during a sound check recently so I wasn't surprised by the bust out, but I bet the crowd was! The end got cut maybe by an old tape flip? Right into an ok, average Gin. Esther is funny as Trey tells us "two stories". The song itself is rushed and sloppy. Chalk Dust was ok, nothing too great. YEM was ok, a few spots here and there, but had a good jam at the end right into HYHU. Which brings Fish out this time for a Bike/Lengthwise combo with vacuum, of course. It's great because the audience initiates the Lengthwise! Lawn Boy is super funny as Page takes a vocal solo in the middle. I would love to see video of this show. Llama was nice and dynamic, rocking as usual. Then more barbershop to close up a fun second set.
Sparkle gets moved to the encore spot tonight and this one is pretty average as is the expected Tweeprise.
On paper this set list is outstanding. And if the playing was better overall, I would have no problem giving this a straight up four star rating, but I am giving it four stars anyway because of the novelty of the bust outs and the special guests, Trey's family.
