second set began with absolute fire. No Men's set the table and WGTYM once again delivered the goods. absolutely epic version highlighted by two distinct sections, one featuring a Trey bendy lick and the other centered around a riff akin to the Izabella intro. as the jam settled down they must've discussed the next song in the in-ear-monitors because they absolutely slammed into Crosseyed with basically no lead up or warning. awesome awesome version, featuring a very cool moment when Kuroda arranged his lights to look like the Chicago Bulls logo.
i must say, the fourth quarter of this show is not particularly strong. Farmhouse was a bit plodding and killed some momentum, Light contained some interesting jamming at first, but then they seemed to get a bit disconnected. rather than soldiering on, Trey instead went into Number Line, which was a serviceable version but still a bit disappointing as a song choice. Cavern, however, is never disappointing and was a fitting cap on a set that contained some incredibly high highs.
i want to briefly take the opportunity to shout out Mike who has really honed the tone on the Serek this tour; during the improvisational highlights of this show (WGTYM of course and, in my opinion, set 1's Gin), his playing was incredible and really drove a lot of the best moments to my ears.
overall a very awesome phish concert. the WGTYM is a must-listen, truly outstanding jam.
