Review by ironchefchris

ironchefchris Just re-listened to this one randomly and this show gets way too much hate. There were moments where the show was a bummer due to some technical gaffes and glitches but overall I loved it and was surprised by the hate it got...and seemingly still gets? It's a little sloppy and wild but it sort of works...I think whatever emotions were going on were definitely starting to show and this show illustrates some of that. The jamming goes from slop to pissed off and into exuberance in short bursts. There's some real tug-o-war going on in who is driving and where they want to go. The Chalkdust meanders into some awesome places. Gin>Jim is fun and loose and build into some unusual peaks from Trey and Fish smacking his crash. Walls of the Cave might be the best I've heard. Trey rips through it, but the whole band is driving pretty hard and again, sound pissed off; you can almost see the mean-mugging that probably occurred when Trey slams back into the Walls outro vocals. Again, its loose during the jams but its always driving. There are some wild moments...David Bowie overall is rough and tumble. The song choices are great, but the order is tricky. All of These Dreams to open a set? Dreams squeezed in set 1 would work and then open with LXL for set 2; that would help a lot I think. Overall, its just an interesting show and deserves a listen and maybe more respect for the jams. This show may exemplify where Phish was at a very specific time; the ups and downs, heavy and sad into happy fun jamming. It's all over the place and makes for an interesting listen.
