Some of the theaters Phish was playing around this time had working orchestra pits for their stage productions, and these pits would be covered with a temporary wood structure normally used as an extension to the stage. Phish, of course, would elect to have this extension lowered to floor level, to allow dancing room for fans up at the front of the stage, even though the extensions were not meant to support the weight of 50 or more dancers! Thus, we get Page's announcement from the management after a nice early-set Mike's Groove, and the band taunts Fishman with HYHU while he adjusts his hi-hat cymbal. Unfortunately, this isn't Trey's sharpest show; he has some huge flubs in The Lizards and Esther. But often when Trey is struggling on stage, he relies on the band mascot, Jon Fishman, to step into the spotlight and provide some "alternative entertainment".

This is another Mike Lynch remote multi-track SBD recording, and the mix sounds great, with a nice all-around balance. I believe it's altogether a fine show for this era, but if you're pressed for time, skip ahead to the banter that starts after Fee in the second set, and stick with it all the way through the encore. And if you can, try to imagine the hairy little beast man wearing a tattered donut frock and goggles, exasperating himself as he recounts the tale of his "near-death experience" just 9 months prior to this show. :)

I discovered this show not on the Spreadsheet, but via the Stage Banter page on the old phish.net FAQ, which included a full transcript of the stories from this show. Thankfully, the streaming audio sites have updated this show to include all of the hilarious banter! :)
