I think that you're a little too obsessed and hung up on Trey's pitch-shifting. He's been on this tack since TAB this past spring.
The first time I actually noticed it was reviewing the versions of Reba from June of 2010. At that time I assumed Trey had a new guitar or something that was giving him equipment problems; I assumed it was a mistake. Now I know there is something he's trying to purposefully do.

I'm definitely hung up on it. I find it more distracting and unpleasant than almost anything I've heard in the band's history. The 6/18/10 Reba is one my least favorite of all time because of the use of that effect.

Just my opinion, of course, and I'm willing to believe that Trey is trying to work out exactly what he wants to do with that whammy.
I respect your response because it's amusingly unguarded and honest. I know, also, that he's used this effect for some time, but I was specifically referring to his soloing style, which I think has been evolving over the last year, really. He seems to me to be focusing on playing less notes than he used to, and making them count more, if that makes any musical sense. Like you, I struggle to explain the technicalities of the whole thing.

My problem with your review primarily was that I felt you threw the baby out with the proverbial bathwater, as it were, because of your irritation. To me, a great show is by definition a show that the majority of people who experience it agree is great. An example is 8/31/12, which I think could be the single most overrated show in the band's history, but I must acknowledge it as great by consensus.

Anyway......I'll send you a get well card.
