@oohwilson: The book doesn't seek to excuse anything so much as examine and understand it. I think it's safe to say that at one point or another every hardcore Phish fan has been on the receiving end of funny looks and probing questions from bosses, peers, in-laws, etc. that spring from prejudices and misunderstanding. Some of the reputation Phish fans have is deserved, but much of it is not. We share that with Juggalos without a doubt. The "living a double life" thing is real for a lot of people.
