Review by PHATTSKIS

PHATTSKIS Another phunky night in the TAB-ernacle! Jibboo is my fiance's favorite PHiSH/TAB song and I called that to open the show for her. Glad that happened of course as that started her immediately getting down as well as the whole place! Smoking version, as well, though it seemed short to me. I do always want the jams to keep going...

Alaska was a nice PHiSH cover and Oooh Child was awesome to hear as well--heard that at my first TAB show at Murat Theater 99 and that one is just hard to beat as an uplifting song! Both Burlap Sack and Cayman Review were their normal fun but then the gears shifted as the red headed Devil Went Down to Georgia popped out and the roof started cracking when the crowd went nuts! The horns in that song were very different from the original and very cool. Pretty sure it was in Push On where after a smoking long ripping jam, Trey and Ray had a great little Axe and Key's jam and was a good set ender with hugs from Trey to Jennifer and a quick band bow.

Setbreak was very cool. Spent a little bit of time tricking these younger girls into telling me who this "Jay" guy was that my friends brought me to see. "Do you guys really like this stuff" I asked them. "How do you dance to this stuff?" I of course was still drenched in sweat from boogying directly in front of them but I guess my line of questions threw them good because they had no idea until one of the girls' boyfriend, who knew my friend Mack and was sitting in the next seat, figured out what was going on and said "Mack just told me that he has seen over 100 PHiSH shows" and they busted out laughing. I had them going good. My fiance' texted me from the restroom and I went to meet her in this very chill lounge/couch/easy chair area where we found one of the other couples who came with us to the show. We commented on how beautiful the old church is inside and what a great venue it is. The Tabernacle is a great place to see a show--not a bad seat in the house--sound is just as great up in the upper balcony as it is on the floor.

We walked back into the show just as the lights went down. The highlight jam of the night to me was Sand--just plain SICK--kept building and building and finally lifting out into space. I really let loose as the band engaged in a musical conversation of spacey grooves, interweaving passages and non-stop drive. One of the best versions I have seen. Don't get me wrong, PHiSH's versions are great, but the addition of the horns REALLY add an extra desired texture. Magilla slapped me good when it started as I have never seen that one live before. Loved hearing that swing band style and really was a great band showcaser. Russ really showed his chops as a jack of all trades drummer all thru the night but that was really cool to see him change gears for that tune. First Tube was solid with its buildup and epic feel--Trey was going crazy during his long endjam--dancing around like a kid! He decided to treat us to Black Dog and Jennifer just started belting out the lyrics before she had a chance to scramble and change her charts. Well played.

Nice long encore with a strong version of Show of Life and Trey ripping up the solo in Sultans really capped off a great show. Looking forward to listening again to this one again.

Cheerz!
