BEYOND THE POND PODCAST: THE GREAT CURVE WITH KATHLEEN HINKEL

Beyond the Pond is a bi-weekly podcast in which Brian Brinkman (@sufferingjuke) and David Goldstein (@daveg924) use the music of Phish as a gateway to introduce the listener to many other bands, the vast majority of which are not jambands. An episode generally begins with a deep dive into a designated portion of Phish improvisation, and then can spin off to any variety of musical themes and other acts, the overarching purpose being introducing the listener to as many new and different bands as possible.

In this episode, we’re joined by a good friend, and excellent photographer, Kathleen Hinkel (@vancityvisuals), co-creator of Mike Side Dyke Side (@MikeSideDykes) to discuss Phish’s performance of Talking Heads’ “The Great Curve” during the Remain in Light Halloween set on 10/31/96.

Topics touched upon range from Kathleen’s excellent dissection of Liz Phair’s ultra-classic Exile in Guyville album, to Dave’s love for Sleater-Kinney’s The Woods and his puzzlement at fans who ignored the excellent solo albums produced by its members, to Brian’s dad Jim, who first tried turning his son on to Remain in Light at the tender age of ten, with minimal success.

We appreciate you listening, and are certain that you will learn something new over the course of just under ninety minutes. You can review and subscribe to Beyond the Pond on iTunes, or simply listen through the player below.
