Review by waxbanks

waxbanks Concise festival show to warm the band up, but there's a little bit of Awesome in there to be sure. No long-form open-ended jams, just compact, extra-hot performances.

Wolfman's Bro is superb - holy cats, check out Trey's restrained-then-wailing solo; 2001 is as brief as the rest of the post-hiatus versions, but rich nonetheless; a very delicate Hood gives way unexpectedly to a gnarly Light reminiscent of Jones Beach; Suzy builds a head of steam in just a few moments (go Page) (and by the way, has everyone's singing improved for this tour? are those actual harmonies I hear?); and YEM is on par with its other excellent 2010 performances, with a very fine Page solo, some wise playing from Trey, and a THUNDEROUS climax to the full-band funk/rock jam. Swell vocal jam too.

Jon Fishman you are a god now.

I'd never give this show to someone wondering What's Up w/This Band Phish I've Heard About (I'd go to 12/14/95, 6/14/00, 12/6/97, 2/28/03...first), but (HERE IS THE THING) joyfully intense 'Type I' playing is how Phish made their name 20 years ago, after all. Right? They said they were going back to the beginning and that's what they've done, with all the accumulated wisdom of decades on the road.

And if these songs are nowhere near the proggy insanity of Phish's pre-funk material in terms of harmonic/rhythmic complication, the exuberance and empathy on display are sure to have won a convert or two down in Austin. It's not as if Phish are hurting for fans, but the indie kids are welcome into the tent too, if they can control their fashion hair.

Review by FifthAvenuePhish

FifthAvenuePhish This show was so much fun. It was a great ending to a beautiful day in Zilker Park. The show is about as straightforward as it gets with some nice moments.

Check out;

Cities (more cowbell, actually I think its a woodblock, but you can always use more cowbell)

Rock and Roll > 2001 (David limey)

I really enjoyed the Cavern, as well.

Review by MikeinAustin

MikeinAustin I live in Austin, TX so great to see them play so close. I've seen Phish play here every time since 1994's The Backyard show, including the last ACL taping back in 2000. I was definitely looking forward to them coming back.

Phish seems to like the town and have had some very above average shows here. See '98 show for a lot of fun at Southpark Meadows.

I wouldn't say that any of these songs had memorable jams at all (I did like the direction Harry Hood was going) but rather it was an exercise in showing what they were doing in the "off" season. Getting it all pulled together.

The show was very tight. Surprisingly tight. Trey has seemed to put away the Whammy pedal, and his tone is near perfect again. His ability to bend the high register strings, and hold down the pitch is right there. Mike and Page seem to be locked together with Page having some new amazing dexterity during Suzy Greenberg. The ability for them all to listen to each other is fantastic. It bodes well for the rest of fall.

Review by Hendrix_Phishinfloyd

Hendrix_Phishinfloyd First of all, Frankster, get over yourself, no one cares about your opinion of Texas. Texas loves Phish, and they should come back more frequently, despite your random bitching. Texas deserves Phish more than it deserves you, so just stay out next time and do us all a favor.

Now on to the show. 15th for me, and a very tight one indeed. As mentioned up top, no outlandish jamming, but that was to be expected as this wasn't really a Phish show, but a chance for the unknowing to get a /taste/. When Slightly Stoopid ended, there was alot of stepping in, and random nudging people out of the way to get as close as possible up front, and that was kind of a drag, but not a ruin by any means.

I was hoping for a Tube or a Punch opener, but prepared for a safe one like Runaway. Pleasantly surprised by DWD, great guitar work from Trey. Mike and fish were one during this show as you've probably noticed. Cities and Wolfman's got me thinking that the setlist itself was going to look pretty good on paper. The 2001 officially melted my face, despite it's short nature. the lights are extremely powerful aspect of the show. See some videos online, check it out.

YEM was PHEE-NOMI-NAL! No two ways about it, all 5 guys (inc Koruda) on point and came to throw down. Tramps had my wife stunned (first show for her) and the bass & drums to end it were simply mind-melting. There were points in the show, Hood for example, where they all hit the down beat with a precision rarely seen by a group of musicians; you could feel the stops in music, between beats/notes..Breath-taking. I sincerely hope that alot of people who have not heard of Phish had a chance to wander over and see what it's about.

Texas. Loves. Phish. Plain and /simple/. ALOT of people here would like nothing more than having them coming back to play some more, myself def included! It's not about what you like or don't like about a state, it's about the music. Remember how many memorable shows have taken place in Utah, and most prefer not to step in that state either. There is a ton of support in Texas for them boys!

Review by da_atx

da_atx This was my fourth show this year, and 6th total. I saw them back in June - the first night in Hartford and both Saratoga Springs shows, and then Camden and Hartford in '09.

As usual, they sounded awesome. I think due to time constraints they had to shorten what would usually be some monster jams, but I was content. That's not to say I wouldn't have loved to hear more. I was secretly hoping they'd say 'screw the time limit' and just do a whole second set.

YEM with Mike's bad ass solo and the crazy vocal jam was probably the highlight of the night for me. It was also my first Possum, Harry Hood, Light and Cavern. So I was super happy about that.

I hope this convinces the group to COME BACK and STOP IGNORING TEXAS!! I'd much rather do an Austin, Houston, Dallas run and not have to spend nearly every last dime to fly up north to see them.

Review by ChavaUT

ChavaUT This was my second show since fall 2000 (saw Charlotte this past summer) and the first show I have had phish come to me, in the city where I live. Of course, nothing spectacular was expected of this show, but they sounded tight throughout, and this is a good sign for those of you with tickets for the fall. DWD got the crowd going and reinforced itself as the classic tour opener. I wondered if they would play Cities since it was ACL and Austin is a music lover's paradise, but the Talking Heads cover ended quickly, bringing me back down to Earth after imagining a Berkeley-esque jam in Zilker Park. Possum, Wolfman's, Chalkdust was simply the boys rocking out songs they've perfected and which sound so crisp in 2010. Rock 'n Roll was the longest jam of the evening at around ten minutes and segued into 2001, which, although still a barn burner, doesn't compare with the longer more exploratory versions of the late 1990s. The Hood jam, before peaking, turned into Light. I thought a jam would come out of this song and hopefully return to Hood, but even the jammed out Light of summer 2000 didn't get some improv last night. Suzy had a nice Page solo, but the highlight of the night for me was the YEM, as I knew they would play this classic song for a diverse audience. The crowd was gettin' down and the jam ended with Mike giving a funky solo. Cavern was a great first song for the encore, and First Tube melted us all down before a walk to downtown where the party continued.

Overall, nothing special here, but a nice night, with a good crowd, and a spectacular setting - Zilker Park with the city skyline in the background. Phish is back and playing as tight as ever. We're in for a treat this fall.

Review by Frankster

Frankster No offense Austin but Texas sucks! The weather sucks, the cops suck and the culture sucks! Attendance at Texas shows is always weak. No support, no shows. Move to the North East and you can have the best of all worlds.
