This night will live in infamy for the My Friend>My left Toe>Whipping Post>Makisupa portion alone. This was one of those moment in Phish history that you will never forget. After a smoking My Friend, the notes of My Left Toe emerged. As the band made their way through this spacey Siket Disk tune a familiar bass lick started emerging from Mike along with these screaming guitar licks from Trey. I remember looking all around in the Pavilion as this was happening and seeing fans shaking their heads in disbelief, was the band busting out WHIPPING POST for the first time since 8-10-96? Then as the first official notes combined with the words "Ive been run down" sang blissfully by Trey hit the crowd like a ton of bricks and one of the loudest crowd reactions happened that I could remember with fans letting out one joyous scream in unision. This is why I go to see Phish.

A classic. ELECTRIC energy from all sides on this night, band and crowd. Just listen to the reaction on the last notes of Antelope, then the first notes of Suzy Greenberg. The band was feeding off the crowd, the crowd giving it right back.

Both sets are simply incredible, and I could give the highlights, but the whole show is worth the download. Absolutely one of my personal favorite shows, and hopefully soon one of yours too. A towering show.

One of the best shows from '99 I've heard so far. The My Left Toe -> Whipping Post segment features some deft, beautiful jamming in the former and some scorching rock in the latter (along with a grand segue); Boogie On stays Type I but hits a really wicked funk groove that'll make your speakers/headphones rattle; Birds of a Feather reaches a multifaceted jam space that might be mistaken for what they were up to in 2011/12 (and thus gets a big thumbs up from me) before it cools down and gets fuzzy and ambient, leading to a frankly *startling* segue into Walk Away; Antelope (mid-set!) has an interesting opening segment that leads into an even more interesting actual jam that features some digressions into sharp funkiness and weird spaciness before cranking up to usual Antelope intensity, making it absolutely must-hear; Suzy Greenberg (!) gets a really relaxed, Page-driven reading; Fish screeches through Purple Rain as a fun palate-cleanser; and YEM features some glorious Gordon bass-in-your-face and a charming reprise of Boogie On. Big-time jams, massive crowd energy, remarkable setlist flow...it all adds up to a glorious show.

the summer 99 tour was coming to a close, and everyone had some pretty lofty hopes for this tour closing run at deer creek. this night prooved, in my opionion, to be the far superior of the two. the next night seemed to be filled with flubs, band tension, and the first set was a sleeper except for a solid bt gin and decent gumbo>nicu combo. this night benefitted from solid playing and a very inspired set list.

meat: well, i don't think anyone saw this coming as the opener. good choice that fit well

my friend my friend: this was played really well, and it really got everyone grooving in the right direction. then phish took a very unexpected turn....

my left toe: i wasn't so familiar with the siket disc, so i didnt spot this one right away, but it sure sounded interesting. right when i was wondering where they werer going to take this one trey started strumming something familiar. i looked at my buddy jeb and yelled....

whipping post!!!: having had grown up on the allman brothers, i loved this tune. i always thought, from the latest 80's versions, that treys vocals were a litttle too "white" on this deep bluesy number. his vocals were still a little too "white," but by damn, he ripped this one on ye 'ol guitar. very inspired playing by all.

makisupa: this was the perfect cool down spot after a very hot start. this is a must hear, with all the gooball, brownies, kief, etc talk plus ck's b day shout out. sure, the light solo does not carry over to cd, but it's still funny. granted, the pre sunset light solo was not so awe inspiring as much as it was simply hilarious.

i saw it again: this one was a nice treat. it was one of the first of the bunch of '97 songs to start being played less frequently. solid version. trey's playing twinged on the dark side here a bit.

boogie on reggae woman: this one was still a bit of treat even in '99. it was well received, and for the time, there was a little bit of exploration in this one. the boys sounded good here before closing down the set with...

cavern: good straight forward version

set 2:

boaf: after seeing a massive version of this tune at polaris, i was surprised to hear it again 2 shows later. while still be well jammed, they took a very different approach to this song than they did 2 nights before. the polaris version was more of a sunra'esque blow out. this was more of a tight/layered/textured jam. right when they started to loosen up a bit they sharply turned the corner into...

walk away!: hell yeah, let's belt it out page 'ol boy! this got the crowd gassed and ready to rock. really good version catching many off guard.

run like an antelope: this was a very intense antelope. this is easily my favorite of both '99 and '00. ck was really killing the lights on this one, but trey really hammered home the tension and release on this one.

suzy greenberg: this was the blow out song tonight. not to compare it to the boaf from columbus, but it served the same purpose. after some very focused and tight jamming, they used this one to really cut loose. page had some firey playing in this one.

hyhu/purlple rain/hyhu: oh fishman. it's almost better when he doesnt know the words. he had some good ad libs about "how prince would want it to be" and what not. good stuff.

yem: good yem. after the tramps they jumped right into a boogie on jam. this was not a tease, this is more of an instrumental boogie reprise. novel, but fun none the less. musically, this is nothing outrageous, but it is worth listening to.

overall:
this show benefitted greatly from inspired song selection, but the muscianship was there on this night. like deer creek 96, i thought this was simply a precursor to a monster night ahead. unfortunately, this was the night in '99.

Another hot humid day in central Indiana. Which means, of course, the show would match or surpass the heat.

And did it ever.

Meat opener, great. My Friend draws huge cheers. MLT brings things down, nice and ethereal... then darkness. Trey starts into Whipping Post and the place erupts. Then the CK5 birthday. I Saw It Again - one of my faves and a rarity at that point. Loving it. 11 minute BORW, then Cavern caps the energy of a high energy set.

Then we have a long birds jam continuing the epic 20+ minute Birds from Polaris two nights before. Dance fest. Transition to walk away is pure blow your hair back rock. Then ANTELOPE! The mid set lope! Place was a loony bin. Speaking of, SUZY! WOW! The energy was insane. Slow it down with HYHU>Purple Rain, during which forgot the lyrics but thanked us for supporting his love of playing the vacuum. Then, as if things couldn't get more ridiculous.. YEM closer.

Encore Loving Cup. Loving Cup was a little more of a rarity back then compared to 2.0 or 3.0. Perfect encore. They smoked it.

In summary.. one of the HIGHEST energy Phish show's I've ever attended. It didn't let up.

Truly worthy of a Live Phish archival release. Some nights, they're in the Zone. This was one of those nights.

There was a special vibe in the air for this show. The band was having more phun than usual, and it showed all night long. Makisupa stands out as extraordinary. Boogie On was sick. Purple Rain was hilarious, and YEM, as usual, was just nasty ass funk!
This whole show was super funky and just a blast to be at!

Great set list. Great energy. Great playing.
All the ingredients for a memorable show!

Killer top shelf 1st set.

An extremely strong My Friend My Friend. And a very early ambient dip into my left toe which on its own could be the jam of the night. Fantastic segue into Whipping Post, my god fans must have lost their minds! Such high energy that seems to roll forward for the rest of the show. Boogie is extremely strong and precise, 99' Boogie On's are nothing to mess around with.

2nd Set is one of those sets where literally everything across the board is above average. A case can even be made for how strong Suzy Greenburg Is!!!

BOAF kicks thing off with just a nice mellow jam very fluid. Walk away has been known as one of the best landing pads and this one is no exception, Trey just roars into it. Then out of nowhere Antelope appears. What a bizzare placement for Antelope, but it works so well excellent setlist construction. Antelope stretches longer than normal and for several minutes gets very mellow before it's conclusion. You can tell Fish wanted Antelope because he's playing around so much on drums and just having a blast.

HYHU was well...HYHU. But like I said above for fun than the norm. YEM was great with a pretty awesome Boogie Jam/Tease towards the end.

Just another front to back barn burner. They seem to go in groups in 99'. 5 star show.

Love the Left Toe -> Whipping Post. I was jogging when I heard this show for the first time. While I had glanced at the setlist prior to pressing play at the start of my run, I guess I had forgotten the song sequence by the time I got going. So when they hit that transition I was totally floored! It put a big smile on my face. Must have been a good one

My second show, and I knew coming out of the Deer Creek gates that I saw a special one. However, our neighbor at the campground didn't have the same point of view that night and thought this was a bad show. I disagree. A fine summer 99 show in my books.
