Review by Grrateful

Grrateful This was my first venture into the world of side projects and I have to say, I walked away feeling highly impressed at how versatile Mike (and the band) is. Not only from a music perspective, but also by the intricate stage setup and the wide array of instruments. Mike and Scott brought out their clear guitars which displayed lights that would change with the music being played. Apparently they add to them every tour (my friend told me they didn't change in rapid succession last year). This worked well with the backdrops on the stage which were large squares with a foil-ish material on the front that reflected the stage lighting. Theatrics aside, the music is what drew me in. I have been familiar with Mikes solo stuff for quite sometime so I knew a lot of the songs, such as Ether, Say Something, Surface, and Meat obviously. Mike spoke for a bit on the new songs they were working on and we got treated to the originals, Here Today and How Many People Are You. I didn't know what to expect from the jamming aspect, but soon realized Mike was taking us places. Spocks Brain was such a treat, and the band went into a dark state of funk and rock that melded together like chocolate and caramel. On completion I turned to my friend with open eyes and nodded; I think I was left speechless. Scott is a fabulous guitar player and fits in perfectly with Mikes heavy sounding bass (I mean his bass would literally echo). Before the encore, the audience cheered for an encore. I mean they actually worked for it! There was a great deal of admiration leading up to Yarmouth. People started clapping in unification and as Mike and the boys come back on stage he proclaims, "I get the feeling this is a party town." If there were any parties going on that night Mike, it would have been a Mormon Chili CookOut compared to filth at Charleston Music Hall. Thanks for one hell of a show boys.

Review by type2guy

type2guy I've seen Phish several times, seen TAB 4 times, and I have to say that my first MGB experience did not disappoint. My friend and I were fortunate enough to chat with the band members before the show. Rob, on keyboards, was a very cool guy to chat with about music. His versatility and musical insight made me look forward to the show. Tim asked Scott If Cities was brought up for the nights show. Scott said that they were working on some new stuff that they were going to bust out. I asked Mike about the Miami Weekapaug, and asked if we'd see more type2 Cactus guitar. He jokingly said that they(Phish) are working on getting a double neck guitar, for multiple members to Play at the same time. We took our pictures said thank you and left. After drinking, and some Kesey power, my friend, two other friends, and I headed to Charleston Music Hall. The venue was very intimate and as one of the techs mentioned before the show, the new light setup was intended to be interactive. He said Mike wanted to make the show unique not just to the band, but make the fans a part of it. The first set had everyone dancing, it was an incredible mix of jam, funk, space, and grunge. I was hoping for Fun, but i got way more than i wanted. The second set wad like the first but very consistent. The band was in sync. Scott is an incredible guitarist. Not to much, but he add to the overall sound, really awesome player. John on drums was ms highlight. He gave alot of energy to the fans and crowd. Rob on keyboards..... All i have to say, there were points of the show where it felt like he was controlling a UFO flying saucer overt the venue.... Like i said "Ken Kesey power". And Mike.... If summer tour 2015- got what he played in Charleston, it would be the closest stuff to 1997-2003 Mike Gordon... Funky, dark, ambient, TYPE II. Scott kept his word, because we heard a couple new songs. Both were great, but "How Many People Are You?" Took the cake for me. What a fun song. They really took this one to some type 2 territory. It started off with what reminded meet of punk or "grunge", and subtly grew into space jams before coming back for a closer. Spocks Brain, Meat, and Yarmouth road also made the crowd happy. Man, overall, i gave this show a 5, for the experience and the amazing musicianship. This was well worth the 4 hr trip. Thank you guys dor making this night special.
