Review by MiguelSanchez

MiguelSanchez this is a seriously nasty phish show. it is, unfortunately, frequently overshadowed by the vegas show the next night. sure, the vegas show is rediculous, but don't let this one get lost in the shuffle. some say, this one is better than vegas...

my friend my friend is one of my favorite openers, especially a nice focused, rocking version like this one. chalk dust keeps the energy flowing in fine form. trey is right on top of this one with a very fiery solo. horn keeps the rocking vibe, but this one seems to have a "breezier" feel than most versions. uncle penn was nice and hot, and then they drop their first treat of the evening. a welcome first set timeber ho! really catches fire. fishman and gordon lay down a nice foundation for trey to really lay it down. sample and train are played fairly straight, and then a very nice and somewhat rare for the time guyute brings the crowd up again. zero shows up a little earlier in the set than normal, and the lizards that follows lets you know there is still more to come. the bowie set closer really rivals timber ho! for jam of the set. page and trey work the spacey section in the middle perfectly before roaring this one to a close.

the second set opens with a bang. hahaha is one of my favorite 3 minute phish songs! mike's songs burns in the 2nd slot. i really hate caspian, but they earn it after such a strong mike's song. sparkle picks things back up before a nice funky punch. i really like these 96 versions. life on mars is a sure fire treat, and they really played it well in 96. then there comes another doozy. this reba is near perfect. lawnboy cools things down after a blazing reba, and it gives the band the opportunity to thank the catering crew. after that, they close the set with a nicely inspired weekapaugh. gordo really rips through this one. then a one song jesus left chicago encore, sold! this is a very nice version of this tune. trey and page sound wonderful on it.

all in all, a great one. i am not in the camp that believes it to be better than vegas, but i'm a sucker for claypool. plus, the mike's groove has better flow in vegas. its tough to argue against a good timber ho! though!

highlights:
set 1:
my friend, timber ho!, bowie

set 2:
haha, mike's song, life on mars, weekapaugh, jesus left chicago
