Peter is one of the few artists who can claim to have appeared on-stage with both Phish and the Grateful Dead. A Grammy-nominated musician, he has written for the Kronos Quartet, appeared in studio with trumpeter Don Cherry, and toured with such acts as Jai Uttal and Michael Ray and The Cosmic Krewe. He has also inspired and led his own musical projects, such as the Hieroglyphics Ensemble (which included fellow jazz musicians Benny Green and Josh Redman) and the Peter Apfelbaum Sextet. He has also toured as a member of Trey’s solo band since 2002, and sat in with Mike’s band ZYDN on 10/16/03.
Though he also plays piano and percussion, his work with Phish has been on the saxophone. In addition to his membership in The Cosmic Country Horns, Peter joined Phish at The Arco Arena in Sacramento in the fall of 1996. There, he joined in on “Timber (Jerry),” “Taste,” and “Funky Bitch.” He later returned with John McEuen to perform an “Amazing Grace” jam and an inspiring “Possum” encore. The “Taste” is often mentioned as a fan-favorite version.
