Date Song City Timing Notes
2003-07-18 Roggae East Troy, WI 8:28 Another great version, but vastly different from the preceding two. This is much more of a high power, rocking jam.
2003-07-18 DwD East Troy, WI 23:15 Incredibly improvisational and hard driving version that includes a section from 17:40 - 19:00 that sounds similar to "Woman of Tokyo." -> to "Catapult" although arguably it's really part of the same jam.
2003-07-18 Catapult East Troy, WI 3:02 -> in from "DwD." Great version which continues the vibe from the epic "Disease" that precedes it.
2003-07-18 Twist East Troy, WI 14:25 A spacey jam strenghtened by chilling effects gains some momentum and eventually finds its way home.
2003-07-18 Hood East Troy, WI 16:14 An excellent "Type II" section peels away from "Hood" at 7:30, continuing for a good 5 minutes before coming home.
2003-07-19 Wilson East Troy, WI 5:57 Among the most metal, evil, shredding Wilson solos around. Mike is in a deeply-effected "DWD"-intro-like tone, which is the icing on the cake and adds a unique heaviness and intensity to this version.
2003-07-19 Piper East Troy, WI 22:40 A spectacular and awe-inspiring exploration. The first of 3 phenomenal summer '03 versions. Must-hear.
2003-07-19 Caspian East Troy, WI 9:23 -> in from "Seven Below." The band rocks this one hard. > to "YEM."
2003-07-19 YEM East Troy, WI 26:25 Fantastic jam segment in an excellent version.
2004-06-25 Wolfman's East Troy, WI 14:35 Excellent, improvisational "Type II" version has some awesome Mike early on followed by funk, then some deep, dark and far-ranging exploration before miraculously finding its way back to "Wolfman's" to close.
2004-06-25 Seven Below East Troy, WI 27:04 The longest version of "Seven Below" is arguably not the best version, but it has some very engaging improvsation. While the boys are ambitious, they never really catch onto a theme, so it seems a bit unfocused at times. If you want a better, albight shorter, '04 "Seven Below," check out the 6/20/04 SPAC version.
2004-06-25 Weekapaug East Troy, WI 11:10 The jam settles down noticeably around 3:00, with good quiet play by all four, before Mike builds a nice meaty foundation for Page and Trey to play over. As the jam returns to familiar ground, Trey leads an inspired, extended and celebratory peak.
2004-06-26 Boogie On East Troy, WI 12:43 During the outro, Mike has a brief solo, and from there, Trey and Page take off, while Fish and Mike stick to "Boogie On" for a bit. The latter two don't hold on for too long before joining the hard rocking, very optimistic (for 2.0) jam with a -> to "Ghost."
2004-06-26 Ghost East Troy, WI 16:03 Euphoric space-disco firehose dance party in Pere Lachaise Cemetery. [-> in from a strong "BORW." Improvisational and exploratory jamming morphs into a bouncy upbeat groove which grows increasingly celebratory. > to a strong "Free."]
2004-06-26 Free East Troy, WI 12:05 > in from a big "Boogie On" -> "Ghost" combo. This one has a really excellent jam.
2004-06-26 Piper East Troy, WI 16:13 A snappy, somewhat dissonant but rocking groove develops and gets out there. Page and Fish are excellent.
2004-08-14 WotC Coventry, VT 15:19 Jam breaks from the standard at 11:00 into a mellow groove that builds energy and > to "Runaway Jim."
2004-08-14 Runaway Jim Coventry, VT 12:23 Very improvisational, "Type II" version with a -> to a very improvisational, "Type II" "Gotta Jibboo."
2004-08-14 Jibboo Coventry, VT 15:23 The yang to 4/16/04's yin. Tight playing for '04. Dark and grimy up front, but once it pushes through to the heavens this "Gotta Jibboo" is breathtaking.
2004-08-14 Antelope Coventry, VT 13:10 Jam segment rages practically non-stop, and Tom Marshall assists with the "Rocco" lyrics.
2004-08-14 Bag Coventry, VT 20:07 Nimbly textured and surgically precise like the big '97 "Bags?" No. Highly improvisational, well played AND a great listen? Absolutely. This version is MUST-HEAR, like 11/21/97, 12/30/97 and 9/14/99. The Coventry "Bag" is full of "2.0-style jamming," is played very well overall, and it's highly listenable. -> to "46 Days."
2004-08-14 Bowie Coventry, VT 12:57 Trey talks about writing "David Bowie" for 4 1/2 minutes before the song - well worth hearing. The jam itself is pretty decent with a nice little shift to major mode and an intense ending.
2004-08-14 Twist Coventry, VT 16:36 A decent jam develops which has an underlying Mike and Fish fueled groove that continues almost throughout. Trey at times uses a lot of distortion, and his seeming lack of direction gives the jam a disjointed feel. Great -> to "The Wedge."
2004-08-14 Stash Coventry, VT 20:42 While the composed section is far from spotless, the jam is very good and multi-dimensional, including a nice move to major mode followed by some great exploration. Unfinished with a > to "Free."
2004-08-14 Free Coventry, VT 9:54 Some sweet Mike bass, then gets very quiet with just Mike and Trey playing, then Fish and Page jump back in.
2004-08-14 Drowned Coventry, VT 26:06 Very raw in parts (at least Trey), but a serious piece of improvisation nonetheless. At the 7 minute mark, the band gets very quiet and almost stops. Trey plays solo for a stretch, and briefly addresses the crowd. Around 12:30, the other band mates rejoin in a very upbeat and rocking jam that accelerates into near fury by 21:30.
2004-08-15 CDT Coventry, VT 13:46 Extremely improvisational version which leaves "CDT" behind near the end and -> to "Possum."
2004-08-15 DwD Coventry, VT 19:02 Very unusual version. The first jam segment is strange, spacey, and Trey sounds off-key at times. Then there's a second jam following the closing riff (without vocal refrain) which has some interesting moments and is pretty soulful.
2004-08-15 SOAMelt Coventry, VT 31:04 Skip the composed section (ugly) and go straight to the jam (released on Live Bait Vol. 5), which is excellent, extended and improvisational. The final 6 spacey minutes are a combination of sad, eerie and haunting, with a hint of optimism near the end. Unfinished with a -> to "Ghost." One of many great jams from the morass of Coventry.
2004-08-15 Ghost Coventry, VT 17:30 Through a crack in the fabric of space-time a horde of flaming orange locusts cascaded down the fetid slope of manure, became a cyclone of debris, limbs, and offal in the muddy bowl then coalesced into a sheet of light which rapidly withdrew upslope back into the void of infinity. [-> in from a strong "SOAM." The jam breaks into an angry, rocking groove that grows dissonant, tension-filled, and includes Trey's eerie yelling and digi-guitar effects.]
2004-08-15 Piper Coventry, VT 9:25 Blistering, fierce, machine-gun Trey, akin at times to Hendrix at his best!
2009-06-21 C&P East Troy, WI 15:04 Very nice second set opener. This one rips from start to finish. Around the 9:30 min mark, Trey and Page really catch a hold of something and blaze through the back of the jam. At 12:30, it starts to explore spacier realms that eventually lead into "Down with Disease."
2009-06-21 Piper East Troy, WI 12:50 Page gets the jam section off to a great start, then Trey zeroes in on a nice blues riff. Taking turns playing off this riff, Trey and Page team up nicely, before the jam eventually dissolves into familiar '09 transition space.
2010-08-14 BOTT East Troy, WI 9:19 Very popular version with fans. Great staccato playing from Trey early in the jam.
2010-08-14 WTU? East Troy, WI 6:08 Notable more for the remarkable and semi-famous -> out of "DwD" than anything else.
2011-07-01 Moma Watkins Glen, NY 9:25 Powerful, extended jam segment with the crowd singing the melody line together with the band at the end.
2011-07-01 Wolfman's Watkins Glen, NY 11:45 Basically "Type I," but there is some fantastic Page/Trey/Mike interplay mid-jam before Trey leads a full-throttle ending.
2011-07-01 Jam Watkins Glen, NY 3:25 Sort of an evil sounding jam with occasional laughing by Fish and Trey opens Set II and > to "C&P."
2011-07-01 Simple Watkins Glen, NY 14:20 A straightforward but delicately played "Simple" fades away, leading to 6 minutes of '99-esque space.
2011-07-02 McGrupp Watkins Glen, NY 9:31 Strong vocals and snappy playing by Mike in the composed section give way to a great Page-led jam. Backed by the band, and with some inspired contributions from Trey, a nice little "McGrupp" jam emerges, which rises and swirls into the customary closing.
2011-07-02 Golden Age Watkins Glen, NY 13:07 Staccato funk jam before delays/effects creep in, foreshadowing the "Storage Jam" to come later in the night. > to "Prince Caspian."
2011-07-02 Tweezer Watkins Glen, NY 11:09 Unusually staccato-esque, repetitive jam, with some "elephant-like" noises from Trey thrown in.
2011-07-03 Wilson Watkins Glen, NY 7:31 The whole band is much looser than normal when they break into the solo, sounding more like a prodding "Carini" jam than "Wilson". Mike is especially eager to push the band into new harmonic (and inharmonic) territories, and the other members accept his challenge with expertly-tuned ears, adeptly following his unpredictable turns on the bass, and delivering a "Wilson" unlike any other version before or after. > to an equally inspired "Mound".
2011-07-03 Mound Watkins Glen, NY 8:01 Great version which includes an unusual straightforward outro jam.
2011-07-03 ASIHTOS Watkins Glen, NY 10:15 Stunning exploratory "Type II" version. The jam departs "ASIHTOS" at 4:00 and arrives in a desert haze where the band proceeds to lose itself in a mirage-filled dream, wandering deliriously until emerging in heavenly bliss at 7:00. Led by Mike, this serene music patiently morphs into ambient space, and gradually fades to silence with no return to "ASIHTOS."
2011-07-03 Reba Watkins Glen, NY 16:07 Great Trey and Mike from the jump, the jamming soulful and melodic. Awesome Page accents characteristically strong Fish, as the jam morphs into extended "Dave's Energy Guide" teasing. The band then crafts an atypical, and totally welcome groove. A pretty powerful build seems to break convention, with the whistling section dissolving into goofy antics which bleed into the noise informing the > into "David Bowie."
2011-07-03 No Quarter Watkins Glen, NY 9:32 Strong, effects-laden playing that pushes a psychedelic edge to match the dark heaviness in the song's lyrics. Firm and confident playing leads to a satisfying peak; a prototypical type I "No Quarter." Fans of this version should also check out 8/17/11.
2012-06-30 Golden Age East Troy, WI 10:30 > in from "Wilson." Rhythmic funk held together by a really fun, loose beat from Fish, with a nice -> to "2001" to finish it.
2012-07-01 Fee East Troy, WI 11:50 This patient and cohesive jam covers a lot of ground in a relatively short period of time. Excellent and Must-Hear.
2012-07-01 Ghost East Troy, WI 9:42 You ever have a pulled pork slider that's got so much flavor packed in such a small bite that it makes you crosseyed? It's like that. [An excellent short but improvisational version promptly departs standard "Ghost" at 5:30 to survey good and varied terrain, includes "C&P" quotes, then -> to "BOTT."]
2012-07-01 Farmhouse East Troy, WI 6:23 Very 3.0-styled jam with peaceful, swinging melodic leads. Everything is subdued and nuanced, and it's just as easy to hear each of the players' respective contributions as it is to hear the unified end result.
2012-08-22 Stash Kansas City, MO 13:42 A very good version that shifts back and forth between minor and major modes, creating tension between dark and bright.
2013-07-20 Piper Chicago, IL 10:16 The Chairman of the Boards takes command on the B-3 in this propulsive and rocking version which packs a lot in 10 min.
2013-08-30 Stash Commerce City, CO 11:56 Some very cool and unusual percussion in the jam, which breaks into major mode, then returns with good intensity.
2013-08-30 LxL Commerce City, CO 8:01 Fish asserts himself strongly, a key element to a quality "Type I" "LxL," and Trey and Page mix it up very nicely.
2013-08-30 Sand Commerce City, CO 15:18 > from "PYITE". Type II version that breaks form around 7:30 and continues on through sections of upbeat melodic playing, rock, and funk. All in all, another strong "Dick's Sand".
2013-08-31 Gin Commerce City, CO 13:01 A very good "Type I" "Gin," thus related to other strong "Type I" versions like 8/17/97, 11/20/98, 9/12/99, and 6/23/00.
2013-08-31 CDT Commerce City, CO 22:51 A very good quality, multi-sectional jam in this extended "CDT," and Fish is spectacular throughout. The jam ranges far, but also meanders at times; it also includes some "Woo!" audience interaction, like the "Tahoe Tweezer."
2013-09-01 It's Ice Commerce City, CO 8:25 Page leads a solid full band jam on the B-3. And compared to 7/14/13, the transition back to "Ice" is clean.
2013-09-01 Carini Commerce City, CO 12:23 A good "Carini" with the now familiar mode shift mid jam. However, the band seems to grapple with where to take the jam from about 6:24 - 9:30, until gaining some good traction and a nice upbeat groove in the final minutes.
2013-09-01 Caspian Commerce City, CO 6:16 A very good "Caspian." At first, Trey uses a "watery" effect with his guitar that sounds very '95. Then the jam breaks into a great rocking and upbeat groove that > to "Piper."
2014-07-18 Golden Age Chicago, IL 16:34 Fish keeps this jam in high gear as it alternates between segments of funky and upbeat jamming until a wave of ambient effects are introduced around the 15 minute mark and concludes with a > to "The Mango Song."
2014-07-18 Wombat Chicago, IL 11:51 "Wombat" goes for its first big ride, leaving the formal song structure behind around 5:00 and breaking into some light and contemplative play. The pace picks up and the intensity gradually increases, before -> to "CDT."
2014-07-19 Roggae Chicago, IL 8:14 A stunning "Type I" version: Page teases "Dirt," then Trey takes the helm joined by Mike, who adds some thunderous double-time riffs which Fish echoes, all leading to a great peak.
2014-07-19 Hood Chicago, IL 16:28 "Harry" once again proves to be the improbable choice for exploratory jamming. This time, the band begins the jam in minor mode, works up to a rocking fury, and finally settles back for a traditional "Hood" closing.
