When fans think of horns, they usually think of Geerz. A childhood friend of Page’s, Carl has shone as a guest on trumpet since 1988. These efforts span various incarnations of The Giant Country Horns and The Cosmic Country Horns, as well as at a Trey solo show on 7/31/01, with Page’s Vida Blue project on 4/24/02, and with Mike at a Col. Bruce Hampton show on 1/3/03. He is currently a full-time Navy musician who teaches at the Armed Forces School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA. His contributions were finally immortalized on the Hampton Comes Alive release, where he can be heard on “Cavern” and “Tubthumping.”
In addition to his scheduled GCH and CCH appearances, Carl has put his twist on such horn-ready numbers as “Magilla” (2/8/91) and “Take the ‘A’ Train” (5/17/91), as well as such songs as “La Grange” (2/8/91). But many fans find his repeated work on “Cavern” and “Jesus Just Left Chicago” to be the most delicious of all.
