6/10/95 Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO Opening is fine. The pre-Nirvana section is typically spacey and
enchanting, but nothing melodious and unusually beautiful occurs. Nirvana at 3:22, and it is delightful, although Page appears to
hit a note or two during it that doesn't exactly blend with the other notes around it.. sooo. Certainly not as gorgeous as it often
is. Mike's solo section is decent (nothun special). The pre-charge is typically strong and driving, and is powerfully played. The
Notes are hit fine and the jamming about them is good... I wasn't really paying attention in all honesty (just zoned), tho. "Boy" at
6:42 after a very severe scream from Trey! The BMGS/WUDMTF segment is unusually punchy. There's an edge to it (the
Lowell version was @$^$% boring next to this)... the jamming amidst the "lyrics" and "verses" is also decent/reasonably active.
Tramps jam segment begins at 8:49. Page is fairly active.. but there's no strong conclusion. At 10:38 Trey opens up the jam
segment preciously noodling. Mike doesn't completely drop out (just delicately plucks in accompaniment). Fish is quiet along
with Trey and Mike. At around 11:15 or so Trey belts out a very catchy, very cool theme and proceeds to milk this a bit --
potential to get very funky!! Page enters quietly with a note or two, but that's it. Mike snaps and plucks a bit in accompaniment..
Trey turns on the watery psychedelic "leslie" effect and begins actively noodling, climbing the 'doc. The jam gets a little spacey
for about ten seconds around 12:30 before exploding into a more vivacious, soaring YEM groove. Around 13 minutes, Trey
gets more active and the jam enters a typically funky, pleasant YEM jam!! The interplay between da boyz is quite pleasant -
Trey is soloing well, but isn't trying to take center stage or anything, and Page, Mike and Fish accompany very phaaaatly to
create a truly well-blended, inspiring YEM groove (especially around 14:30 or so). The climactic closing minutes are Mighty
Fine, but not exceptionally so, in my opinion. It is still AWESOME! At 15:45 Bass and Drums BURSTS into the picture
(somewhat catching me offguard.. the closing of the YEM wasn't especially dramatic.. I thought they would hit another level).
Mike funks out severely, and tears up the damn 'doc. Those of you unduly impressed by Mike's prowess in Fall '96 YEMs
need to revisit this version. Mike is extremely funky & active. Fish accompanies very respectfully, giving Mike all the room.
Closing WUDMTF segment at 17:05. Vocal jam ensues within 20 seconds as usual. Vocal jam doesn't really start jamming for
about a minute.. starts out slowly and spacily with eerie noises. Good vocal groove around 18:40, fwiw. One could actually
dance to this. It dies out soon, though (the rhythm). Blah. Yawn. Nothing really happens of any strange merit. Vocal jamming, to
be sure, but no small furry creatures noises or crazy howling or screaming or eerie chants. Well, I spoke too soon.. at about 22
minutes, they start vocalizing the "HYHU" theme and sing this for a wee bit. Total time 22:29. I thought this was a typically great
YEM, basically. B/B- rating. There's a lot of goofing off before Lonesome Cowboy Bill. The goofing off includes Page teasing
what I think is part of "A Fanfare for the Common Man" by Aaron Copland on the piano... two cents charlie This is an example
of a jam that knocked me out at the show, but which, now that I've been listening critically to YEM for awhile, isn't terribly
exceptional in light of numerous other versions, in my terrifyingly pompous opinion.
