Jonathon Lingerfelt

5/10/99 wolfe auditorium

This show was my first trey solo show and man was I impressed. His Farmhouse
opener set a calm yet static mood that was only elevated by the melodic dream
sequence of velvet sea. I almost expected Trey to switch up the "I've been
wading in the" with a "I've been walkin in the" of billie joel fame, but this
was not to be. Although his next number was unfamiliar, im always down with a
good railroad tune. Trey's "real country song" was im afraid to say almost
entirely erased from my memory, but I do remeber thinking if phish ever
releases another video maybe cmt would be a more likely carrier than the 2-D
musical wash that is Mtv. The instumental Minestrone had a Bela Fleck wind to
it I thought, and was more diserving of the once title Purple Hugh. As trey
walked into strange design I played my way up closer for a better look. By the
way if you are the blond girl with the yellow tinted glasses, soft eyes, black
skirt, expensive cigerettes, brown and white top, and note book!
with star ov david center of your setlist page, hey email me, I was that guy
who was asking to see your setlist after the show, I was spun off some gellies
and a euro, and i think I flashed my ID at you. Hitherto the snowflakes in the
sand offered it self kindly to my creeping hallucinations. Honestly there were
mad parts of this show i loved but my favorite was the Kissed by Mist, THANK
YOU TREY AND THANK YOU TREY!!!!! Hopefully Miss Julia "butterfly" Hill will get
a tape of this show. Sidenote Phish has never seemed to be very political, but
i guarantee they can't miss with this beautiful statement. Next trey stepped
to his keyboard and lay out billy breathes with so much charisma. A fresh
Roggae set the scene for a for the always too trippy gamehenge title track the
man who stepped into yesterday. trey then put forth his buddy jeff's Possum
whose lyrics echoed the sentiments of so many of the mountaious crowd.

second set later.

Everything was in order, the kind was kind, the rest was the best, and the BIER GARDEN was an excellent place to get this party started right. Only one thing was lacking, our buddy wilson(he couldn't make it due to a late exam). Even our freind Rut said he thought some king of prussia overtones, or would that be undertones. However let's talk about the show, second set to be exact. As the lights went down the glass came out all over this fine room. Trey came out grinning like he knew something we didn't. Several cries for voodoo child erupted, but ole ernest had a different kind of Jimi in mind. Now remeber the first set was closed with two gamehenge titles so we all felt anything was possible. Trey stitched together a tight and memorable "wind creis mary" and oh my did it ever. I believe this was a first time cover but I may be wrong, however it sounded like they had played it every night for weeks. The second song of the 2nd set was an unfamiliar one to me "Further on up the Road". The chorus went something like "...someday somebody's gonna hurt you the way you hurt me, further on up the road" I really have no idea what it was about but it really was a touching little peice. Then they licked out "Heavy Thing" followed by another newer one to me "Wil it round in Circles." At this point I have to congratulate whoever was doing the lights this show, you did an excellet job. I would also like to mention trey played the hollow body doc second set, I think. "Gotta Jibbo" was next followed by a real odd tune "bug" maybe of tom's amphibian fame? After this was one I had hoped all day for "Ooh child." I have forgotten who wrote it, but thank you cause trey does it right. Next came tony markellis baritone vocal bit "Is it a wind or a bug, Izitduwindubug" commonly titled as "Windora Bug". I hope this song as well as some others from this tour will be played this summer. "Free thought" followed which I'm afraid I have forgotten, then trey moved to a small drum kit oppisite side of the stage and commensed to slapping heads in time with the drummer, Russ? This drum duet ratteled and rhythmically climbed its way up to some misty tree top city and right at the height of this ewok sounding environement some one yelled "FUCK PACIFIC LUMBER!!!!!" This heartfelt although obtrusive comment actually seemed to please and even charge up trey. After the very tribal drum solo(trey please playa drum duet w/ fish on summer tour) Trey eased into a very sobering "Sand" formerly know as pistol or symptom. If any one knows the lyrics or origin of this tune i would love to know. Trey then stepped off and returned with the other tune I had been waiting to here, "I can see clearly now". Wow it was beautiful. If anyone has tapes of this show to trade I HAVE PHIL AND FREINDS TAPES TO TRADE FOR IT. Big thanks to wilson linker for letting my brother and I use his email. Jolly on see you on summer tour. peace, corey

As soon as I saw the inside of the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium I knew how lucky I was. Security was kind of tight getting in, but it wasn't bad. The only slightly annoying thing was the behavior of some of the fans. First set-Absolutely amazing!!! I never could have imagined how beautiful it would sound. Aside from some of the people who decided to scream during the most intimate moments, you could have heard a pin drop. Trey was very gracious and really seemed to be relaxed and enjoying himself. He joked with the audience about the title of "Minestrone" being called "Purple Hugh" and turned around with possibly one of the most incredible acoustic pieces that I've ever heard. Before he played the "true Country Song," he talked about how disgraceful the state of country music seems to be at the moment and how he and Tom Marshall wanted to write something that would represent the true genre of country music. He didn't disappoint. My personal favorite was the "Roggae>TMWSIY" followed by a rocking, yet beautiful "Possum" with the crowd singing backup. He was truly having a great time. Second Set-Absolutely Raging!!! This show clearly became Trey in full rockstar form. He was on fire from the beginning. "The Wind Cries Mary" was nailed perfectly and he sounded great. My personal favorites of this set were "Round in Circles," "Jiboo," and "Windora Bug." It was so great to see him just enjoying himself and the music. The expressions on his face said it all and it was also meaningful to see him acknowledging the fans even with his eyes. Third row seats can tell you a lot about the mood of the performance and he let it all hang out. He has an interesting keyboard setup that I've never seen him play with before that allowed him to play preset delay loops in different pitches just by striking the different keys. I think he mainly did this during "Windora Bug" but it was really funky and created some incredible textures. The "Drums" jam was also impressive. The encore was nice and he thanked the crowd for letting him come to their town. Overall the performance was flawless. He had a great time and made it worth every cent for the price of the tix. I'll even think about forgiving TicketBastard for the service charges based on the performance. I'm praying that he'll decide that he wants to release some of these shows on CD. These shows are a true testament to how talented he is and how much fun he can have. These aren't Phish shows by any means. They're completely different but leave you with the same great feeling inside. My only gripe...some of the fans. Number One...if you're going to climb over people's seats and shove them out of the way to get closer to the front, at least say "excuse me" or something. Number Two...Please respect other people's property in the lots. My car was parked in a lot in front of the venue and when I came out of the show I had people without tickets sitting on the hood and trunk of my car, and beer spilled all over it. Nothing is more irritating than peaceful "hippies" who would die for motherearth and work so dilligently to pick up trash, but when it comes to other people's cars they couldn't give a shit if they leave dents in the hood. The show was incredible and brought tears to my eyes, but now I've got to go get some dents out of my car. -later, BCC

Before Trey > played Minestrone he said that he saw on the net where someone named his > song "Minestrone" and that he had already decided that it should be > called Purple Hugh. But being the sport he is, Trey decided that > Minestrone will remain Minestrone. > He said at first that the song Purple Hugh was about a man named Purple > Hugh and not to be confused (unless you wanted to confuse it) with the > color purple. He then started to play it but stopped and confessed he > did not know anyone named Hugh and he was just lying to the pholks in > Asheville. So he then played a song about lying that he and Tom Marshall > wrote together. He said it was "A Real Country Song" and not the "crap > that is being shoved in people's faces right now". It has very amusing > lyrics and a great little beat. > Strange Design and Snowflakes In the Sand were unbelieveable, that is> all I can say bout them. > Before he played Kissed by Mist he talked on how Julia Butterfly Hill > was such a "rare" person to go out and to devote her life to saving > trees. It is a truly "rare" song too:) > Billy Breathes was awesome with Trey on the piano. > Possum rocked the roof off of the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium with 100% (it > seemed) crowd participation. Trey was grinning the whole song:) > The second set was equally as entertaining as the first except Trey did > little talking a more pure Jamming! > The atmosphere in the small venue in Asheville was like no other I have > experienced. It was a total light extravaganza that went along PERFECTLY > with each and every melody Trey played. Another occurance that seemed > fitting in the small auditorium was the shouting of old style Charlie > Chaplain banter like "Punch him in the eye" and "Let's go downtown". > There was little vending on the streets of Asheville and not too many > people were looking for extras. I would suggest that if you have a > chance to catch Trey's show to do so. It was GREAT! Steve Helton [email protected]
