One of several guest percussionists who accompanied Phish in the Fall of 1996, Buddy Miles is perhaps best known as the drummer with Jimi Hendrix and Band of Gypsys (1969-70) and for his vocal hit “Them Changes” (1970), which Phish covered on 11/30/97. He and Merl Saunders joined Phish on 10/22/96 at Madison Square Garden for an “All Along the Watchtower” encore, with Miles playing on Fishman's kit, Saunders trading keyboards with Page, and Fishman on Trey's mini-drum kit. Some reviews of the show state that Miles also sang “And she's buying a stairway... to heaven” at the end of the song. Miles was the second Hendrix collaborator to sit in with Phish, after Noel Redding. Buddy Miles died of congestive heart failure on February 26, 2008.
