Cavern

kipmat Another random LOL moment from the Fall '91 tour: After Divided Sky ends, Fishman asks for a moment to remove a drumstick splinter from his hand. Of course, Trey seizes the opportunity to rib Fishman a little with some mock praise. As Fishman begins the intro to Cavern, Trey exhorts the little drummer boy to "lay down a solid groove". Likely annoyed by his bandleader's sarcastic humor, Fishman plays a series of complicated drum patterns that fall oddly over Mike's Cavern bass line. A highly amused Trey adds, "Ah, the sliver is obviously affecting his ability to keep time, ladies and gentlemen!" Trey plays some "annoying" guitar in the intro and during the breaks of the song, to push the joke further, and later botches a line of the lyric, probably out of amused distraction. But Fishman gets the last laugh during his drum break in the final chorus - instead of his usual rocking drum fill, he plays four simple quarter note hits on his snare drum. It's musical humor, but also a nice illustration of how well the band got along during the early touring days.
