My Friend began with a cappella lyrics to the tune of Back in my Hometown. Nellie Kane, the Phish debut of Beaumont Rag, and Foreplay/Long Time were performed acoustic.

Review by westbrook

westbrook This is a solid show with a very nice setlist but nothing is extraordinary. There are no best-of-tour versions in this show, just your normal Fall 94 excellence. The a capella intro to My Friend, My Friend is interesting. Reba makes an early appearance, and it is pretty good, but not nearly as good as what would come later in the tour (10/18, 10/31, 11/25). SOAM is very dissonant. At times, Trey's playing is similar to the end of an Antelope jam. The end of the jam is unusual and very dark. Trey's guitar growls, while Fishman pounds the drums. The Lizards is a nice departure from the darkness of SOAM. I always like to hear Guelah Papyrus and The Asse Festival section is played well. Julius and Sweet Adeline end a very nice first set.

Peaches>Bowie is always a great way to start a set. David Bowie is very good. It is definitely a precursor to the huge versions the band threw down later in the tour. Page is very good in YEM, and the jam overall is excellent. After a hot YEM, Nellie Kane through Foreplay/Longtime is a good breather. Trey remarks that 2 days ago, Fishman had never picked up a mandolin, and today, he has picked one up. Fishman also takes his first mandolin solo. A typically great Hood and Sample in a Jar end the set very well. A Good Times Bad Times encore is always welcome.
