The Bowie here clearly closes the set (whichever one it was). It also contains an early "Sing a Random Note" signal from Trey, although the Secret Language wouldn't be created for another 5 years. I like this Bowie for its extremely patient build, chaotic peaks, and subsequent descent into a jazzy jam which is similar to Antelope. In fact, Mike plays around with the Antelope notes a bit in here. At 18 minutes, this was one of the longest jams the band had ever played, and it actually holds up well considering the youth of the band.
Sympathy for the Devil is novel, but the band is unequipped to give the song due diligence. Somehow Fish's work on the cowbell doesn't seem to give the song enough bottom. The Antelope here is cut, but I think this AC/DC is really quite good, and its transition into Possum is less of a segue than a very quick start, but it works. It's almost too bad that little of this show is taped, if the Bag is any function of how well the band played. They were definitely playing well this night.
Phish would go on to play many more times at Gallaghers, but most of the shows were unrecorded, or are held in Del Martin's stash of secrets. Too bad, since the band seemed to enjoy this little Waitsfield venue.
