All I have to say is that you better catch a show!!! Albany was, in a
word, fantastic. A sick jam in the middle of Reba, a wild and wooly voice
jam, SUZIE GREENBERG, and much, much more!! If anyone is worried about
not having a ticket, I don't think anyone was shut out of Albany, and
there were quite a few people looking for tickets (I don't think many
people were scalping, they just had extras). Get psyched for Binghamton!

                   ENTER: THE DUDE OF LIFE!
I Don't Care about Anyone except Myself

Encores: Sweet Adeline (a capella, unamplified)
                              Good Times, Bad Times

HOORAY for the DUDE OF LIFE!

Particularly hot moments included the Stash and Bowie jams, Fluffhead
and Harry Hood. Y.E.M. was hot as well, but not earth shattering. Page
asked the crowd about Fishman's new Mumu, a nice white number with eyes
screened/painted randomly on it. No Bouncing Ball Jam, but that's
probably a game reserved for the college fieldhouses.
The Dude of Life had a little fun getting his (Mike's) mike cord
untangled, but the boys cranked out a version that sounded remarkably
like Chalk Dust, and the Dude gave an inspired performance. I saw him
hanging around the soundboard before the show and thought to myself
"Where have I seen this guy before?" I said hello, but the question
mark never disappeared from above my head, until of course he appeared
on stage. My only other encounter was a certain notorious appearance at
Wetlands in NYC.
The Palace was a nice venue, comfortable and with good sound. Security
was reasonable and taping was no hassle. No alcohol was served. Thanks
to all responsible for putting on the show.
Peace, Love and Happiness.

Subject: Albany Thoughts

Albany was so damn hot! Couple notes about what others said.
I disagree about thew ticket sisituation. I saw many people
jonseing for tics, being there about an hour before I guess I
was exposed to it longer. I think it may be wrong to leave people
with the impression that tics may be easy to come by. Especially
at some of the venues coming up. Portchester will probably only
have
a few people getting rid of un-needed tics, and will probably have
        many scalper scum.

What a fantastic "Gregorian Chant" the vocal jam of YEM became!

The Dude of life sang "I don't care about anyone except myself"
as the first encore, then the band played Sweet Adeline, and
Good times bad Times for the 2nd encore.

I could hear "Lengthwise" many many more times.

Did anyone hear Trey in the first set say "Dude of life" I believe
        he did...

Well time to pack up and head to Cornell.

first let me ask a question about colchester:

| Vocal Weekapaug Meltdown-->

could someone who was there please explain what this means?

ok, on to shows that i was at...

albany:

|I Walk The Line -mike- Johnny Cash classic
|David Bowie

i think they did a bit of a Bowie tease before I Walk The Line; well, at
least two other people and myself were certain they were going to go into
Bowie; and then when they did play it, they didn't finish it! i can't
remember now exactly how they stopped, but they never quite got to that
final crescendo and finale; i was certain that they were going to open up
the second set by finishing Bowie, but they didn't; so then i was hoping
that they would finish it for an encore; i mentioned this to trey after
the show (he popped out of the stage door to chat with some phans), and he
said something like "yeah, i thought we were going to finish it too, but
then the Dude of Life showed up"; i suggested that they finish it the next
night, and he said he'd maybe they'd do that; but alas, even though i kept
screaming "FINISH BOWIE!!!" at Stony Brook, they didn't

| Y.E.M.>vocal jam

way cool vocal jam! they ended up slowly singing (someone mentioned it
sounded a bit like a gregorian chant) these neat harmonies

| Terrapin

any thoughts on whether or not everyone leaving Fish on stage alone was
planned? he definitely looked kind of perplexed when he looked around and
everybody else was gone; i guess Fishman decided he couldn't repair his
old dress with any more duct tape and decided it was time for a new one;
somebody said he introduced himself in Vermont as "Eyeball Man", but it
was definitely something else in Albany; i thought it sounded like "The
??? Eye"; Jeff, what did you say you thought it was? "Iandi" (as in
I-And-I)

| I Don't Care About Anyone Except Myself

I didn't pick this up until Rob Johnson pointed it out, but this sounded
EXACTLY like Chalkdust! I've got to go home and listen to Amy's Farm to
see if that was the case there, or if they just purposely fooled with it
to make it seem that way in Albany.

i had a great time at this show; even though the venue was significantly
larger than most of the shows that i've seen, i really liked the place -
it's really pretty nice inside, security was not overbearing, the
acoustics were good, and i didn't feel that the closeness of the band and
the audience had disappeared just because there were a lot of people
there; on the contrary, it was kind of neat to be sharing in the groove
with so many other people simultaneously; i spent both sets up in the
balcony, and i had plenty of room to move around and dance; it was kind of
neat being so high up - i could even see when Page was playing the organ,
something not possible from floor level (except at the Campus Club last
spring, when I spent the show about 5 feet to the side of Page and had an
excellent view of everything)

as for the net gathering, it did actually occur, but in the future it
would be nice of somebody who knows the area could take the initiative to
make a final decision and post it, along with directions; i found out how
to get there by calling information to get the number, and calling the
Half Moon Cafe to get directions; it was a decent place for a gathering,
although it wasn't, imo, very close to the venue; ideally it should be a
convenient walking distance; it was nice to meet some new people at the
gathering, and i saw a bunch of other familiar faces at the show

many intense musical highlights for me, esp. Reba, Stash, Fluffhead, and
Harry Hood

new songs: i don't really remember too much about them, except i think
there was one that was kind of slow, not too typical of Phish (in a
certain sense kind of like Silent In The Morning) - maybe this was Fast
Enough For You; anyway, i kind of like tunes like this; while the all out
jamming songs are what i like best about Phish, it's great that they can
exhibit so much musical variety and explore new forms of expression; When
You're There (or whatever Fish's new song was) - kind of silly, but hey,
why not?

oh yeah, i also thought i heard a bit of Ballad Of Curtis Leow when Trey
was saying something about Curtis (who is that anyway? i think he was
wishing him a happy birthday or something); they didn't end up playing the
song, but i won't complain about seeing the Dude of Life instead

. . . r i c H

p.s. matt, you really ought to start bringing some net shirts to the
shows;
everytime i wear my shirt people ask me "how can i get one of those?"

Well, it was a long weekend, but well worth all the driving and lack
of sleep. After putting 880 miles on the car and losing another
hubcab, it was nice to finally get home after Ithaca and get into a
nice comfy bed!

Of the Albany, Stony Brook and Ithaca shows, I'd say that Albany was
my favorite.

Karen and I left Rochester around 2 pm on Friday and were on the
road to....

Albany:
The Palace was a great place. Conveniently located right off the
expressway with a marque (sp?) on the front- 'An Evening with Phish'!
We cruised by around 6 and there was a pretty good sized crowd out
front. Why?? It was sold out and cold!
So we headed over to the Halfmoon. Not many people there but nice
to meet those who were there.
When we went back to the Palace, some guy asked me, "What's going on
there, some kind of religous happening?" I said, "Not really." :-)
There were some cops out front hassling people with back-packs. One
cop even confiscated a bunch of t-shirts from one guy.

The Palace was real nice. Reminded me a bit of the Eastman Theater in
Rochester (hint, hint). Security was even pretty cool. I thought they
might be tougher than most places because it was such a nice place.

This was probably my favorite of the three because of the songs and
also because I wasn't as tired as the next two. We got a bunch of new
ones: Axilla, I Walk the Line, Fast Enough For You, Lengthwise; a
bunch of my favorites:  Suzy, Sloth!, Reba, Sparkle, Bowie, Fluffhead!;
and of course the Dude of Life. Who cares if he can't sing and has
absolutely no stage prescence. He was great! When I first got the
Amy's Farm tapes, I never thought I'd hear "I Don't Care.." live. Too
bad Sophie wasn't there so they could've done "She's Bitchin' Again"!!

All in all, a great show. We drove for 2 hours afterward (to cut down
on driving time the next day) and stopped at a hotel somewhere.
We were up by 10 and on the road to....

Greetings from rain-henge...

Has anybody else noticed that the lighting has been...

                !!! ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC !!!!

Having ONLY seen the Albany show (bummer!) I have to say that Chris is
quite the dude-man for his job with the lights!

I love the effects he did in albany with the alternating banks of white
spots, criss-crossing behind the band -- it made all kinds of
neeto-diamond patterns in the smoke! It looked fantastic!

Also, there were a number of times when he'd use some warm colored floods
in front (orange and red) and cooler colors (blue & green) in back. The
effect was quite surreal -- the guys would be filled with one hue and it
literally looked like someone had taken a pen and drawn an outline around
them in a totally different color. The contrast was striking! It gave
them a super-human aurora; and it gave me the recurring impression that
our guys were 'not of this earth' (to borrow a phrase) and just a
projection, an image, a great hallucination that we somehow were all
experiencing together!
Fortunately, I know better... ;-)

The Minkin they had in Albany was AMAZING! I don't know HOW many colors I
saw come from that......but it was never the same set of colors twice! I
hope they put it up all the other shows so y'all can SEE what I mean.

Chris and his lights have become more and more an integral part of the
total Phish experience!!! I hope I'm not the only one to enjoy the VISUAL
aspect of Phish!
