4/22/90 Cutler Quad, Colorado College, Colorado Springs, CO (Rvwd 4/95) The opening to the Mike's Song is standard. Nothing unusual or special. The jam segment is similarly straightforward, even when Trey comes in. It just plods along. Mike and Page are grooving, Luke Skywalker has some excellent fills, but Trey is not doing anything especially keen. Frankly, if Trey hadn't played during this Mike's, it probably would have been fine. Sounds f$cked up at times -- distorted in an baaad way. Plus its short. H2 comes in just after 6 mins. Trey tunes his guitar in the beginning of it (before heading into the main theme). Typical version. Week kicks in at nearly the 9 min point. Mike jams the opening. Mike's opening jam is funky as usual, but it is not as impressive as some of the '89 versions reviewed earlier. The Week jam is really smooth. Trey sounds very focused, as if he went into this jam knowing exactly what he wanted to play. His jamming and skills in this Week make me wonder whether there was something wrong with him or his equipment in the Mike's. This is a beautiful, ordinary Week jam, which I wished would go on forever. Everyone is hanging in there creatively, tightly. No space, no teases of other tunes, no sloppiness. This very short MikeSGroove ends at 15 mins. It also closes the first set, btw (I wish they still closed the first set with WEEK, at least once in a few weeks.. geez!). C- .. On a different note, before the 'Fire' at this show someone yells for Freebird (and someone else yells for Stairway.. ;^).
