Our online community started 24 years ago this week, with the original PhishNet email list. It's evolved - through a Usenet newsgroup, various website incarnations, and more - and continues to grow and (hopefully) improve each day. Whether you're newly arrived, have been here from the start, or anything in between, we appreciate your interest, interactions, and support; and we look forward to many more years, many more shows, and many more friends. Huzzah!
The Mockingbird Foundation is proud and excited to announce that the third edition of The Phish Companion will now be self-published by the Foundation. We anticipate announcing more news about the book shortly, including where you will be able to purchase it. Meanwhile, we are temporarily suspending preorders of TPC3 through the Phish.net store. Those who previously placed preorders through the Phish.net store will be contacted about your options. Preorders made through any other outlet will likely be cancelled and, if charged, refunded. We are very eager to get TPC3 into your hands so that you can read the !&%#! book and feel the message, and will provide updates as soon as we're able!
Since @Joonze (Kevin) began the Forum's most recent fundraising drive in mid-November (boosted by the "Icculus Challenge" in December), the Mockingbird Foundation has received over thirty thousand dollars in donations from individuals! This is a record for the Foundation, in that we have never previously received so much in individual donations within such a short amount of time.
The Board members and officers of the Foundation cannot thank each of you enough for caring about music education for children as much as we do, by donating so much and so generously these past few months, and for supporting our efforts to cycle our love of music back to others.
Every dollar really counts! If you're reading this and you didn't donate, please consider donating to the Foundation in any amount. Your donation is entirely tax deductible! We are a 501(c)(3) that is run entirely by volunteers and that has no paid staff. So, please consider joining the more than one hundred fans who have donated to the Foundation in recent months, by donating to the Foundation whose volunteers operate this site for the benefit of both you and music education!
We remind those of you lucky enough to be attending Phish's New Years Eve run at Madison Square Garden to join your fellow fans for some NYE cheer at our Third Annual Phish.net NYE meetup on Sunday, December 29 from 2:00 p.m. to show time, this year on the rooftop garden of The Beer Authority at 400 West 40th Street (W. 40th Street at 8th Avenue, across from the Port Authority Bus Terminal). There are 24 draught lines right up on the roof, and access to over 100 more beers and a decent looking pub menu via waitstaff.
As usual we will commandeer the PA system, so bring your portable music players and favorite jams as well. More info on the meetup in this forum thread here, and about the Beer Authority in general here. This is a photo of the rooftop garden, though we're told there will be some winter protection from the elements in place:
OVERSTEP, NEW STUDIO ALBUM & 2014 TOUR ANNOUNCED
On February 25, 2014, ATO Records will release Mike Gordon’s new studio solo album, Overstep. Overstep is Mike’s fourth solo album, following 2003’s Inside In, 2008’s The Green Sparrow and 2010’s Moss. Beginning today, fans can stream “Ether,” the album’s opening track, at http://mike-gordon.com/audio/overstep-ether. Album pre-order details will be announced shortly.
Mike shared songwriting duties with guitarist and longtime collaborator Scott Murawski and handed over the producing reins for the first time in his solo career, enlisting Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Uncle Tupelo, Pixies). He also invited a few new players into the studio, including legendary drummer Matt Chamberlain (Jon Brion, Fiona Apple).
To celebrate the release of Overstep, Mike’s band will return to the road with a North American tour that will kick off at the Westcott Theatre in Syracuse, NY on February 28. The run will include shows at New York City’s Webster Hall (March 1), the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles (March 17) and the historic Fillmore in San Francisco (March 18) and the band’s first performance in Vancouver, BC, Canada. He’ll be joined on the road by his longtime band – Scott Murawski (guitar), Craig Myers (percussion), Tom Cleary (keyboards) and Todd Isler (drums). The band’s new repertoire will be augmented by hints of secret synesthetic mad scientist gadgetry on and around the stage.
A limited number of tickets are available NOW via a real-time presale at http://tickets.mike-gordon.com/. Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning Friday, December 13, at 10:00 AM ET. See below for itinerary or visit the tour dates page at http://mike-gordon.com/ for further details. To watch the official tour announcement video, please click here.

T.J. Catalani and the management of the Rock Bottom Brewery in Chicago are graciously fundraising for The Mockingbird Foundation on the weekend that Phish plays in Chicago.
They will be serving an ale, called "Sample," all weekend, and fifty (50) cents of every pint sold will be donated to Mockingbird. The ale is "a big, hoppy amber," that was "brewed with caramel malts and generous late kettle and dry hops for a touch of malt sweetness." It also has "a heady pungent hop aroma, bold resinous hop flavor and a touch of alcohol warmth." In addition it will be sold in mason jars with the Foundation's logo on them! Here are the details:
Thursday, July 18th: "Summer Honey Tapping Party." $1.00 from every pint of Summer Honey that is sold will benefit The Mockingbird Foundation! There will be live music beginning at 6pm from Whiskey Jezebel (http://whiskeyjezebel.com/) as well as "Complimentary Passed Appetizers" at 6pm. There will also be a 50/50 raffle with 50% of the pot going to the Foundation, with the drawing around 9pm.
Friday, July 19th through Sunday, July 21st: "Sample" ale will be served in mason jars, with $0.50 from every jar sold going to The Mockingbird Foundation.
The brewery's hours are 11 am until 2 am, and all ages are welcome. Please hit them pre and post show if you can and support this effort! They are right off the Red line at the Grand stop, at One West Grand. From the venue, you walk about twenty minutes to the Red line at Roosevelt (the closest stop to the venue) and head towards Howard. They're 5 stops away (7 or 8 minutes).
Phish.Net and The Mockingbird Foundation cannot thank Rock Bottom Brewery of Chicago enough for their generosity. This is the first time a brewpub has ever hosted a fundraiser like this and we are blown away. We hope you all support this effort! Thank you!
