Frequently Asked Questions

Faqhistory

Over the last sixteen years, there have been files, channels, mailing lists, MOOs, newsgroups, chat rooms, message boards, forums, networks, torrents, wikis, and more. Locales for new info have come and gone. Some have been more persistent and enduring (and some have been more reliable) than others - but there has always been a FAQ (the frequently asked questions file, or "fack"), a sole-editor compilation based continuous and continual input of thousands of Phish fans, observers, employees, and friends. Now, with a redesigned layout and fully revised content, the FAQ is back!

Beginnings: The Phish.Net FAQ File began circa April 1991 as 13questions and answers in ASCII, maintained by Lee Silverman from it's inception until mid-1992:

Questions we've answered already, in order of appearence:
How do you pronounce Junta?
What are they saying in "You Enjoy Myself"?
Can you give me some basic background info?
How do I post to the Phish-net?
Change Subscription?
What is The Helping Phriendly Book?
Is it a Fat or Furry creature from Mars?
What is "Mike's Groove"?
How do you pronounce "Guelah Papyrus"?
What are the really early albums and what songs are on them?
What's Trey's real name?
How are Phish related to the Grateful Dead?
What is a tape tree and how does it work?

Evolution: The file is currently maintained by Ellis Godard, who assimilates the contributions and corrections submitted by hundreds of Phish.Netters each year. Through these contributions, the "file" has grown to over 420 separate web pages, structured in topical categories to answer thousands of questions (plus links to scores of other resources, on the Phish.Net and beyond), and offered in multiple formats(though now primarily HTML). It is integrated with thousands of internal hyperlinks that make use of not only words but also punctuation, graphics, spaces, edges, and more, including contributions from hundreds of other fans just like (and perhaps including) you!

Location: This file has in the past been cross-posted to three Usenet newsgroups - rec.music.phish, rec.answers, and news.answers - and is presently archived, in its current format and accessible via HTTP, at www.phish.net (aka www.phish.net, aka netspace.org/phish), a project of the Mockingbird Foundation.

Attribution: Please take notice of the copyright notice, referenced at the top and bottom of (and claimed for) every page in the site.

Contribution: If the question you have is not here, post the question to <phish@phish.net>, perhaps with a subject "Another Question for Icculus". If you see an answer that is wrong or insufficient, or if you have suggestions for new questions and answers, email at your leisure. Submissions, corrections, gripes, questions, answers, etc. are always welcome, and constructive criticism is actively encouraged. With over 420 pages here, the FAQ simply cannot be kept up-to-date (much less improved) without your help emailing problems, errors, corrections, additions, etc. So, keep it up! :) This is your document, so DO NOT hesitate to send yours!
