PHISHING POLL THURSDAY, V5: FALL TOURS TO REMEMBER

With the sounds of summer so fresh in our minds, it's hard for us to fathom that the first Fall Tour since 2010 (and the third since 2000) is right around the corner. But it is!

If you are as giddy about that as we are, it's with good historical reason: Phish's autumn excursions have yielded some of the band's most enduring performances and have marked quantum leaps in Phish's song catalog, stagecraft, and improvisational prowess. And while it's no easy task to pick a favorite from the bunch, we know you're game. Once again, we're giving you the full monty (sans staff bias) so limber up your thumbs and hash it out in the comments.

And hey, don't forget to bring a bulky wool sweater.

phortin Phish played a fall tour in 2010. It contained one of the better shows at Manchester from front to back up until then.

bl002e Great list idea!

Fall 2009 doesn't look like it's listed -- I'd probably only put it above 1992, though.

mcgrupp81 I used to hang around Phishhook when I was amassing my collection. It seemed like Fall 97 was always the favorite tour amongst the posters. I'm partial to Fall 95. December 95 Phish is a treasure trove.

12/1 Mike's Groove, 12/2 Tweezer, 12/4 Antelope, 12/5 Gin and Hood, 12/7 Mike's Groove, 12/8 Tweezer, 12/9 YEM to start the month.

B_Dub I don't understand how there are 11 no votes for Fall 97. Best Phish tour ever?? I think 2010 should get more recognition and I would probably rank it #3 tour since their return (behind summer '13 #1 and summer '12 #2). Manchester show mentioned above, Guyutica, and don't forget about 2nd night 10/16 in Charleston. Blew the roof off that place that night. And then the Little Feat cover. I thought that album fit Phish and their current style of playing to a T. Beautifully executed.

HarborSeal It's not on the level of 94, 95, or 97, but I think Fall 96 gets a bit of a bum rap. Phish was playing many of its songs wonderfully that year. Simple and DWD were coming into their own as consistent jam vehicles. Other songs, like Mike's, 'Paug, and Maze, had terrific tours, and Taste started to find its legs late on fall tour (see 11/29 and 30 for versions that anticipate the explosions of amazing Tastes in 97).

It's true that the explorations weren't as frequent or as cosmic, but there were some deep, powerful jams during Fall 96. Every show from 10/31 -> 11/8 contains a standout improvisational highlight: the RiL set, the 11/2 Crosseyed -> Antelope (not to mention Waste, Hood, and a very strong first set with Karl Perazzo!), the 11/3 Tweezer, the 11/6 Mike's Groove , the 11/7 Gin, and the 11/8 Simple. Then there are the 11/18 and 12/6 Simples, the 11/27 Diseezer, the 12/1 Tweezer, 12/4 Mike's, 11/13 Suzy...

Yes, Fall 96 is no Fall 95 or 97, or even particularly close. But don't overlook the gems from this tour. Phish is an AMAZING band, and even during a bit of a down year, they were consistently creating music worth hearing repeatedly.

Because some probably think it should be in second—or perhaps third or fourth place—and the only way to get it there is to downvote it. For example, I love 97 but I want it below 95. I'm one of the 11 15. Relatedly I want 98 4th, which is where it is, so I've abstained. If it moves or I sense that it's threatened, then I'll vote up or down.

Ranker gamifies polling, and I've warmed to it. Maybe I'm wrong in seeing it as a game, though. I do hope its analytics and insights are shared in a blog post soon.
