MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 127

Happy New Year from Mystery Jam HQ here at Phish.net. For the 127th installment of the MJ, we've selected a jam that will delight and confound... or just be solved by 12:45. It really could go either way. As usual we will be playing for an MP3 download, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. The rules haven't changed: you need to correctly identify the song and the date to win. Post your guess in the comments. One guess per person per day (with the second “day” starting after I post the hint). A hint will be posted on Tuesday (if necessary) and the answer will be posted on Wednesday. Good luck...

Wednesday Answer: Congrats to conradjohansen for being the first to identify the 12/28/03 "Frankie Says." The Blog will return on Monday with MJMCXXVIII.

Phart_Door Nah, that's 2.0 for sure. I'll go with the Suzy Greenberg from 12/28/03.

officercookies 11/23 1997 gin,

literally no idea though, been bouncing from 3.0, to 2.0 from dwd to maze to piper to C+P
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer First thought was 2.0 as well. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've heard this before FWIW though that doesn't narrow it down (I've listened to every 2.0 and 3.0 show!).

uctweezer (That is the *exact* same tone in the Miami Suzy)

MiguelSanchez i'm stuck on this one. it's definitely 2.0, and it's definitely not the 12/30/12 dwd.

God dammit I'm an idiot. I should have realized. I blasted through all the jammy songs from Miami '03, even thinking "that Frankie looks a little long..." but got distracted with some Vegas '04. Nice one.
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer And to make it even more frustrating, I recognized that as being the same tone as the Suzy... from the same night! Because his pedals WERE on the exact same setting a few songs later.
, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose That Miami run was sloppy at times but definitely not short on jams, risks and fun. Oddly enough, for New Year's runs post 1.0, I'd rank the two Miami ones above all the MSGs, with 09 and 03 neck and neck for the top spot. If Summer 03 was Trey's "sober tour," did things fall apart for him in December 03?

I had to sit on my hands to not type how close you were, but I didn't want to influence the game. I can't remember which past MJM it was, but I'm almost positive a very similar thing happened to me once. Half-satisfying knowing how close you were, but half-torturous as well.

If I was a betting man, just from the tapes, I'd put Trey's 2003 off-the-wagon moment at around the break between the second and third sets on the second day of It. The 46 Days is easily the least focused of the super-extended summer 2003 jams, and the raspiness and randomness of Trey's mid-Antelope banter approach Bonnaroo '02/Vegas '04 levels.

IMO.

bl002e And as far as ranking the post-1.0 NYE runs, the two Miami runs are certainly at least near the top. The 2010 and 2012 runs are absolute contenders as well. The 12/31/10 Ghost, 1/1/11 set II, 12/28/12 set II, and 12/30/12 set II all push those two runs at the top, as well. I'm guessing no one's really arguing that the 2002 and 2011 runs belong above the other four anyway, though.

When comparing and rating shows, if anything I tend to overcompensate against any possible bias I'd naturally have from being at a given show. That said, I'm not sure this past 2012 run gets beat by any of the other five, despite 12/29/12 being a (relative) clunker. 2003 is probably its only rival in my mind.

I need to brush up on Miami '03. I don't think I've listened to it since, well, early '04...

Yeah it's a weird one. In some sense, it's Frankie Says > Crazy Dark Jam, as there aren't many remnants of Frankie in the ensuing jam that ultimately lands on Llama. Miami '03 is worth checking out again if it's really been that long. The PFunk stuff I can live without, but overall it's a solid run as @andrewrose and @bl002e point out.

yeah, as much as i like p funk, that section does little to nothing for me. as for the rest of the run, i remember enjoying some of the jams, but i remember it being a little "choppy," for lack of a better term. i'll have to pull it down this week and give it a spin.
, comment by bl002e
bl002e My appreciation for Miami 2003 is certainly in spite of the P-Funk medley. I fucking love Parliament/Funkadelic/George Clinton, and I'm sure live at the show, that whole segment was an absolute blast, but it's an auto-skip when listening to it.
